I don't disagree with the quality of opposition, but I'd argue that we were particularly uncompetitive in all of those losses.

I think we were uncompetitive early in all of those games, but once we woke up we were forever chasing our tails. It is hard to look as good as those clubs, once you have surrendered a match winning lead. Because all of those teams are in the higher echelon of performance, they were far less likely to let us back in whereas the one game where we really did rein in a potentially match winning lead, against Richmond, we were able to do so because frankly the Tigers are not up to it this year.

I think DR here is right........I mean we've had a blessed run of injuries til now, maybe we don't bat that deep after all.

The promise of this year was built on the strength of our best 22. they have not once played together this year, our hope of top 4 has disappeared due to this, now all we can hope for is we stay in the final race and have a massive September, we know at our best we can beat them all and out our worst Dingley u19s could whip our arse. We just need our best for four weeks running during September, what happens between now and then should all be built around preparing for those four weeks.

Talk like that of the OP is just hysterics of a school girl, I doubt this school girl was around when Adelaide beat us in that night game.

But who can look the group in the eye and deliver it though?

Brent Harvey. Hard to have a better role-model than Boom Boom.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'd also like to hear from some of the old-guard - those who played in the Laidley teams which, for all their deficiencies, you could never question their endeavour. People like Spud and McMahon know what it's like to squeeze every bit out of what was a slightly better than average list.

At the time we called it Shinboner Spirit. I wouldn't mind hearing about it again ...

I have commented several times about injuries, the club has clearly been covering injuries of several players for whatever reason...

this is bigger issue than any of us know i'm sure....

Mate, I don't think I am being hysterical at all.
You may have a different view by seasons end when we either struggle to make the 8 or fall in and are thrashed in the first final.
BTW, I was around in 93 when Adelaide thrashed us in that night game and have been around for all our premierships and attended all but the 75 game.
So don't assume you know everying.

And in our case why is it that we have beaten three of the current top 4 in Port, Fremantle and Sydney, yet have really only had one bad game that we should have won, being this loss to Brisbane? Of our other losses, Collingwood and Geelong are higher placed than us, Essendon were bound to come out defiantly in round 1, Gold Coast is level with us on the ladder and Adelaide in Adelaide was always going to be a hard ask. (Make no mistake, they are no duds, Adelaide, as Port has just found out.)

The fact that you are justifying losses against two sides outside the eight, a team that has been made to look ordinary against most good opposition this season (Geelong) and a team that we should be around the same level as (Collingwood) just tells me we haven't made the required progress since 2012.

Out of curiousity - and apologies if this has already been asked and I've missed it...

But has a team even sacked its coach while it was in the top 8/6/5/4 (whatever it was at that time) before? I can't think of that having occurred....

So we are gunna go 7-1 when we've currently gone 8-6? Not convinced we can even go 5-3 Caracas
Agree totally. However, 7-1 is definitely not beyond us - if we can just get our act together. The injuries are a worry, though - something we're overlooking in our utter disgust over blowing the Lion's game.

Off hand, I don't think so.

Jezza at Carlton after winning the flag in 79, Joyce at Hawthorn when Yabby returned and Alves at the Saints would be closest, but none in season I think. Northey another one you could probably add to the list.

Scott won't be going anywhere unless there is a run of absolutely catastrophic losses between now and the end of the season.

To me, this is the crux of our disappointment. Up until Saturday, we were annoyed because we had performed so badly in those games. However, there was always that "out" because we should have been beaten by more on all occasions. The fact that we kept the defeats to pretty acceptable proportions seemed to, at least, show that we could control run on's to a degree. Also, all our defeats were against good opposition on the night. However, the same could not be said on Saturday night. We had a good start against a low-level team who were backing up from a trip to WA - and somehow got overrun.

Cheers. It would be a remarkable step to take.

I can't argue with the suggestion that if we miss the finals from here, Scott's position is, um, tenuous at best.

Terry Wheeler was sacked two games into the season - at the time they were percentage off 4th spot (1-1, 12th).

Allan Joyce got sacked after a 13-7 season (lost first week of finals).

Stan Alves got sacked after a 13-9 season (lost first week of finals).

Paul Feltham was 5-2 as a care-taker coach but wasn't appointed.

It cracks me up that they sacked Stan and replaced him with "Timmmmmaaayyy!!!"...and before Stan, Kenny was their coach.

And later they had Butters as president.

Given their close friendship and the unquestioning faith, a tap on the shoulder and quiet word would hold a lot of weight if it was coming from the chairman.

You realise he tried to talk Laidley out of resigning, he is more one-eyed than the most optimistic of North posters here.

There is no way in hell he is going to tap Scott on the shoulder.
