Why waste your time if the list manager isn't interested? Surely you ask the question first

How do you know the list manager was instantly uninterested? how do you know he wasn't aware of Sando meeting with him? how do you know it wasn't until they reported back to him with what they learnt that he made the decision to say no?

Stuff like this would happen regularly.
No, that's just it.

It would never, ever happen.

The football department is a group of people that supposedly works together towards a common goal. Each filling their role but always on the same page, communicating and united.

That story shows a complete and utter breakdown.

If he's making the decision why didn't he meet with him?

You would think that best practice would be to have the Head Coach and List Manager decide on players they want. If the both agree - we chase that player. If they both disagree - we don't.

If the head coach wants a player and and the list manager doesn't - they present their case to the CEO who casts the deciding vote.
This offers a failsafe against a coach trying to bring in players to protect his job.
Ceo should stay the **** away from that sort of thing.

Busy, on holidays, sick, in Melbourne for trade week, interstate to meet with other players. Could be lots of reasons.
Then have the meeting when he's available.

There's no excuses for that level of disjointedness.

Clearly he didn't trust the coach and vice versa. A broken system.

Who did Noble and Sanderson both report to?
At one stage Noble was working under Sanderson in the box on match days then Sanderson would report to Noble during the week

Trigg devised the system

Didn't you glean what happened from Kane?

No I was pointing out there could be more to the story to people who had their pitchforks out. I was offering alternative contexts where what Kane said would be normal football club practice, and perhaps not amateur hour like some are quick to presume it to be.

If they reported to anyone, which they obviously would, it had to be either Smart or Trigg. Both equally capable and experienced in running a top line AFL footy department.

I think the most damning thing that Slippery P highlighted was just how shit our organisational structure was under Trigg.

From a purely business perspective you had two employees using company time and resources to go after a player before getting approval from the guy who ultimately makes the decision. It shows a complete and utter lack of communication (from all parties) and shows what a shambles we were.

Amateur hour.

Guys, Guys, Guys, Guys!!!! You absolutely have no idea what goes on in recruitment so it is completely mind boggling how you can critique it against something you have no information or facts about.

If you look at the facts on the table of how we performed in that draft, trade week and mini trade week suggests we blitzed the offseason. This says our recruiting and list management department is working soundly.

Fact: Sanderson was announced Coach of Adelaide FC, Mon 19th September. Just two weeks before trade week commences. Think about it, he has to interview all the players, decide on his list and assess the holes and needs to fulfil his game plan. He is also a new coach and heavily inexperienced. Combine that with the poor history of giving inexperienced coaches everything they ask for and the club spending over $100k easily on recruiting resources over the course of the year we weren't about to just chuck it down the toilet to gift Sando everything.

Don't let emotion fool you into thinking the AFC did something wrong just because you don't like Trigg. The list manager is the fail safe so a coach doesn't come in and completely F over a list in the same manner Voss did at Brisbane by having free reign.

You do realise its a professional era and clubs have many irons in the fire. Cornes certainly isn't the first player burnt by the AFC and he wont be the last (doesn't make it right but its the nature of the beast). It would be completely stupid to have all our eggs in one basket and then at the last minute the player backs out.

I think it suggests the complete opposite to amateur hour.

All we need now is for Rucci to conduct an indepth interview with Kochie on the issue to discover the truth.

I wish you hadn't wasted so much time writing such a long post that completely misses the point. Nobody has a problem with the List Manager making these types of decisions.

The issue is why Sando and Harper were trying to lure a player who they weren't allowed to bring in.

As you said - Sando had just two weeks to assess all those things - so why was he wasting one of those days/nights at Kane Cornes house when the list manager was going to stop the deal? Surely the club should have had a rock solid infrastructure in place so that the new coach would know what happens in recruitment.

But you don't know the full story, for all you know the list manager let the new coach go recruiting and then for fun changed his mind

Just a question: of those asking why Sando was there, how many were against his trip to the UK, saying he should instead be staying here and luring Polec?

Definitely you'd want your senior coach and list manager working together to recruit players they had decided would be good targets for the club.

Operating independently is about as stupid as you can possibly get.

Looking back, recruiting Tambling when the coach clearly didn't want him shows that we've been operating DUMB for a long time.

Hopefully that level of idiocy left with Trigg.

How are you even comparing the 2? The coach does play a part in convincing a player to join there club but that's done in consultation with the club. Polec was an obvious target. Surely in your endeavour to stick up for the club you could come up with a relevant example.

Yes.
