1- Chad
2- Betts
3- Bruest
4- Rioli

Betts has had a really poor 2nd half. Don't be shocked if Bruest (consistent all year) or Rioli (very good 2nd half) get in. All Australian selectors seem to have short memories and pick players off their 2nd half a lot. Walters is a chance too, and Jamie Cripps an outside chance. Reality is it is Wingard....then a massive gap. Could just see them pick a midfielder there, like Gray for example.

Agreed on betts, his first half of the year was amazing. If he finishes the year strongly in the next 3 games I think he will get in.

I don't like the idea of Rioli getting in, facts are he has probably played 2 great game for the year (including last weekend) all the rest he has been okay-pretty good. He will only be getting in because his name is Rioli.

What if I told you, facts are that statement is probably wrong?

I'm not Cyril's biggest fan let me just tell you that, but you are selling his season short. The other thing they may do is reward Cameron and pick another tall forward. I just feel this year has been a relatively average season for small forwards. I actually have Jamie Cripps as the 2nd one in my side, and really that 2nd small forward role could be anyone.

I concede good sir.

Your argument is impenetrable, well done.

Everyone tends to hate Rioli due to Bruce. Believe me I can't stand Bruce and his commentary. However Rioli has had a great season. In fact I would rather have a small forward known for defence, so either Rioli or Cripps.

The Hawthorn board MVP on here will after last weekends votes are counted have him coming 2nd. Not bad for just ok in the team coming 3rd

Fans of teams have their favourite players too though. I think it's a stretch to say Cyril has been more valuable that Mitchell, Hodge or Smith throughout the season. Shiels has probably had more of an impact too. Would be shocked to see him in the top 3 of the B&F at this stage of the season.

No doubt favourites would get more votes but it was incorrect to say that most of his season has just been ok. I think he would be around top 3 in the B&F competing with Mitchell, Hodge and Shiels

Although Bett's second half to the year hasn't been as good as his first half, he's still scored at least one goal in every game and a bag of 5 and 3 goals in the last 4 weeks. 50-ish goals from a small forward is a very good effort, which I guess it's why it's hard for someone like a Betts, Bruest or Wingard to possibly miss the AA team as they will all finish with around that many goals for the year.

Oh yea I'm with you there his season has certainly been better than ok. Seems to have had a very solid 2nd half to the season and will be important going into finals. I doubt he will get AA ahead of either Wingard or Betts though.

The issue is that 3 doesn't go into 2, and that is even if you pick 2. My view is you pick the best attacking one (Wingard) and the best defensive one (a number of options, Rioli/Cripps, etc). I get what you are saying though.

You just have to pick the best two small forwards, doesn't matter about attacking or defending. Betts and Wingard are the best small forwards in the game this year.

No way you could say that cripps has had a better year then Betts. And no way you could say rioli has had a better year then betts

Depends on your view. My view is simple, it is idea to have a small forward with tackling pressure in your team to go along with the attacking small forward. I would pick Rioli over Betts and yes I would pick Jamie Cripps over Betts. WC are coming 2nd they deserve a couple of AA's. Now one will be Nic Nat (2nd ruck) but who else? Priddis maybe but he is only borderline.

Jamie cripps has had a better year then betts, okay. AA is a team made up of the best performing players of the year, ladder position does not justify AA selections. I understand your view, but it is wrong (in my opinion)

Kennedy is guaranteed to be in the 22 and I would also have NicNat, Gaff and Priddis in there. When picking these teams I think you have to just go with the best 2 performed small forwards regardless of the type of player they are, which is Wingard and Betts.

Ladder position shouldn't, but it does. They always try to give a couple from the top 4 sides. I don't agree with it, but it happens. Gaff might make it as a winger I guess but even so, who else is making it from WC? Betts had an amazing 1st half of the season, his form has tapered off though. Is a good 13-14 weeks enough? Maybe. Not convinced though.

Maybe, but I would like to see a defensive forward recognised. Similarly it was good last year to have a small defender recognised. I would be happy with Rioli actually.

Rioli has unquestionably been in Hawthorn's top 5 players this season and a strong argument can be made for our third best. Mitchell and Hodge are probably a clear 1 and 2 but Rioli has had his best season, especially the last couple of months. He is ranked third in coaches votes for the club (Mitchell 60, Hodge, 45, Rioli 36), the Hawthorn board will have him outright second after this last Saturday (Mitch 46, Rioli 32, Hodge 31) and I've got him fourth in my rankings (Mitch 93, Hodge 76, Gunston 63, Rioli 59).

Not trying to convince anyone of his place in the actual AA 22 as I haven't seen enough footy this year to form an opinion on other candidates other than the stats sheet. However from a Hawthorn perspective he is clearly in front of Breust and his season has been comfortably better than "ok - pretty good", given his influence on a top 4 side, with a % of 160.

Would surely be a certainty for the squad of 40 at least.

Mitchell, Hodge and Gibson have been our three best players this year.
