We can not match, because Carlton didn't match for Betts. We received Betts for nothing, therefore it's only fair they receive Dangerfield for nothing.

Except, the part they are forgetting - Carlton had the choice to match but didn't.

Carlton wanted Betts to leave to create salary cap space for Thomas.

I couldn't care less if Geelong hold us to ransom and we miss out on their first round pick and get nothing and he goes to Carlton. So be it, we must stand tall. Hopefully though he'd decide to stay and we just automatically trade him the next season on contract when Geelong realise how crap they really are and how desperately they need him so we can get something better for him.

It is in theory. However, the AFL has an out-clause and can use it's discretion as well. That's what saw them give Melbourne pick 3 for Frawley as a backdoor priority pick. Unlikely to happen, but I see no reason to not just give us pick 3 or whatever it is after the Carlton/Brisbane (who particularly need it) picks.
