No.. no he wouldn't.

Wouldn't even get close.

There is only a small amount of players earning 750k or over per year, and most are superstar KPP or multiple AA/Brownlow winning mids.

500k a year is more then fair. Sidebottom is no superstar

Cloke Treloar and Pendlebury already take up the spots in our 700K+ club
I don't agree. Treloar was rumoured to be on 700.. Daisy got 750.. I think you underate Sidey.

I'm a big fan of Sidebottom - IMO he's underrated but I can accept others who thing he's overrated. I'd pay him more but certainly happy if he's happy with what's reported. The cash figure doesn't worry me, it's the 5 years that makes me smile

I would have preferred 6 years to take him over 300 games.

Shows his love for the club no doubt other clubs would have chucked as much as 800k per season at Steele. Absolutely wrapped he will be with us when we contend for our next flag!

I think regardless of who thinks he's overrated or underrated, we can all agree he has taken significantly less than he could have gained from testing the free agency waters. Given he is the highest profile FA in 2016, has elite endurance in a new era of interchange restrictions, and reportedly had multiple clubs making enquiries, if a bidding war for his services was to start between clubs he could easily have gotten anywhere between $600-800k.

The fact that he's taken $550k on a long term deal is amazing, not only because it essentially makes him a pie for life, but because by the time his contract ends he'll likely be on barely above the average wage for a best 22 player. That's an astonishingly big win for the club!

We can also be thankful that Essendon have turned into a pile of crap and thus removing any temptation for Steele to go there.

Honestly don't think he'd be tempted anyway.

Maybe there are incentives worked in if his kicks reach the target on the full?
Clever.
Although his style is my preferred - better than kicking it over his head.

Who's his manager? Surely wouldn't have been one of his better days

You've got some pretty good 'mail'. You know exactly how much Collingwood have in the cap, and now your telling us what NM and Essendon offered Sidey, as they were the clubs reportedly keen on him, NM offered him big offer last year.

You're not the most likeable poster IMV, but you sure do have some good mail, will be following you in future. :thumbsu:

Can't read it.
STEELE Sidebottom is close to signing a five-year deal worth about $2.75 million to stay at Collingwood. Sidebottom, 25, is set to reject rival free agency offers and commit to the Pies until the end of 2021.

Seriously?
Sidey and his manager should be applauded.
Obviously the manager was under instruction to do a deal with us.
If he had held out until seasons end we would have had to endure the idiotic crap which Cloke's last contract inspired the less intelligent on our board.

Off-field. Steele, Swan and Dusty are all extremely durable and consistent footballers, IMO, but they like to party.

I have no issue with us re-signing him whatsoever I just feel the teensiest bit uncomfortable with the tenure and would have felt slightly more comfortable with it being say 3 years @ $650k.

Glad that he's re-signing overall though I have to stress that.

Harsh comparing Swan to Martin, but to compare Sidey is ludicrous. Sidey is a happy go lucky country boy who likes to party, he will mature and I think would be a great bloke to have around the club. I think Sidey would be a better bloke than Swan. As for Martin, when he wanted out, as much as I enjoyed watching him play, I relaised something I wasn't aware of, I loved watching Martin play, but really disliked him as a person.

He's gret to watch, but at the same time, looks like an absolute goose of a bloke.

You've completely misunderstood me! Great blokes are aloud to get on the gear too just look at Keeffe he's a ripper.

haha, I am fully aware of this. What about the other 70 per cent of AFL footballers.
Sidey seems like a good bloke, likeable decent kind of a guy. And I love watching him play too. Break-out year in 2016.

Certainly should be applauded from our perspective and no doubt he was working under instruction form Sidebottom - or Ed!! but just goes against most of the money hungry grub managers that usually grace these types of FA deals. Just surprised that's all.

Maybe, I really dont have an issue with them actually taking it at all they can snort lines for days for all I care as (I fully appreciate others see it differently). They're just taking a massive risk by doing so which is something I'm wary of.

Edit: I need to add that the other condition of me accepting it is that they don't lead some of the younger guys astray.

Unless you know these guys how can you judge? From afar, Swan looks like the type that could lead them astray, Sidey this doesn't seem like the case. Swan has been said to have a poor attitude on the training track, whereas Sidey busts a gut and wins time trials. What it's rumored what Sidey did, is no different to 70 per cent of other players, Keeffe and Thomas set a new precedent in the AFL, you snort it, you get caught, you may not get 1 strike, but a 2 year ban, you know the rest. They are very unlucky, Steele maybe lucky HE wasn't tested, and particuarly so because it was very close o home, a fellow Collingwood player getting done, but in reality, his name shouldn't be thrown around any more or less than any other player who's experimented. Also, is Steele an addict like Cousins? Don't think so, and do you know this to be the case? Rhetorical question, no need to answer mate.

Do you mean Swan doesn't have elite endurance or Martin? Because Swan surely does!

Fantastic gut running at high speed but Swanny also uses the bench more than most to get it done so I can see how people under rate his endurance. Those repeat effort don't happen without it though.

What are you talking about? I'm not judging them! My issue is that we've given a 5 year deal to someone that is. I would have gone 3.

The Sidebottom I know of is a great bloke, ditto Swanny and from all reports in a social context Dusty as well.

Yeah but you started out question Sidey's character as per the five year deal. If you know Sidey to be a good bloke, than why care? Three years for a gun like Sidey, no chance. As has been mentioned, three year deals for a player the quality of Steele are in the past.

Don't think anyone would pay 800 a season for the running bottom.
