Bumped Hawthorn - the beginning of the end? Will they make the fnals in 2017?

1991 was the last flag and surely the end of an era? I get the Hawks made final for a couple of years after but it was a slide from a very lofty height from then on. Or did I misread your post?

I think the comparison was referring to our chances of still getting up for another flag. 91 came after 88/89 when it was assumed 90 was the end of the era and the team was too old and slow to compete for another flag.

I think the reality is that the 91 team was probably younger than this year's team, and that really we probably should have won in 90 too, but lost to a team that matched up well against us that year in the finals. We'd thumped the premier by 80+ a couple of weeks before hand, so would have gone in with confidence had we made the GF. Not ruling out playing in a GF next year, but like this year, a lot of luck would have to go our way. We'd need to hope the draw in the finals lined up such that our kryptonite sides are knocked out by teams we match up better on. While we only just missed top spot this year, we also only just missed the bottom half of the 8 such was the closeness of the 8, and that was with Ceglar playing almost the full season. Recruits will have to go well. In the short term Vickery might be even more important to grab than JOM and Mitchell due to Ceglar's injury, and Roughy probably a long way off returning.

Way to early still but they do look slow late in games.

Things change quick though and they still have a heap of talent to pick from, not sure what Vickery brings though besides all round shitness.

Transition year. Reminds me of 09 minus the billion injuries.

Young noobs are hot and cold. Old veterans are playing in patches and don't have the fitness to go 100%. The new gameplan is taking time to set.

The high ball killing us like the pre-Lake days. We need another ****ing Lake.

Edit: Nevermind the injury part just as I type this Gunston pings a calf. :'(

They look nowhere near the Hawthorn we have come to know of in the last decade. May very well miss Finals but will still be around the mark of a top 8 finish.

Twice in two games that they've fallen away badly from about half-way through the third quarter.

Kind of did the same thing in the semi-final last year too....

You didn't transition in 09. You choked.

Except you don't have Lewis, a good Gibson, Mitchell, a good Hodge, Buddy etc

Of course we did but the year was a massive eye opener and helped us cut the wheat from the chaffe. Players were cut. Coaches were cut. The gameplan got a cut and burn treatment.

No player can replace the above. Buddy we've done without.

Mitchell mk 2, JOM and Burton have the talent to be the next big 3 at the club. Just a matter of time whether they make it to that level or not.
