From what you've written it seems you are saying you are either a paid up member or you probably couldn't give a shit. I'm trying to say most "supporters" are somewhere in the middle. The value these supporters bring to a club is eyeballs that can be sold to advertisers/sponsors.

What are these 'general stats' you referred to? If you are referring to things like Facebook or instagram, it isn't really a solid indication. People tend to 'like' anything which they have a mild interest in. An example is I 'liked' Melbourne Storm, but to be honest I watched only half a game of rugby in my life.

I agree there are those who are in the middle who are between not caring at all and those who buy a membership. I don't know why you think I said otherwise. What I disagree with is the ratio you suggest (ie the bell curve). I think there are more supporters who vaguely follow the footy rather than who do things like attend games regularly, watch their team on T.V most weeks etc.

I think the point of my original post is that you can be certain that a member of a club has a reasonable interest in the club and a better indicator. A 'supporter' on the other hand will range from not having an interest to going to a couple games a year and watching games on T.V.

You think the bell is skewed towards the less engaged end, I don't. Expect in Sydney's case where there is evidence to support that (low attendance vs high supporters). Talking to a few blokes down the pub isn't enough evidence for me to think the bell curve should be skewed that much.
I mean you might be right, but I'd like to see a bit more evidence of this.

Carlton membership actually increased substantially during our initial run of spoon years.

We've certainly lost support over the last two decades but we've still got a very healthy level of support.

but I'm an MCC member and I go for Carlton. If your going to include MCC members that go for Melbourne in your memebership total don't forget to add Carltons as well. There is an option of adding an extra $60 to your mrmbership to become a member of the team of your choice.

Figures as of Nov 2018 puts total mcc financial membership as 131797 with supporters identifying as:
Melbourne 17.4% (approx 22933)
Carlton 9.7% (approx 12784)

Not surprised that Melbourne are still the biggest club in the mcc members as I went to both Melbourne finals at the MCG and the MCC members area was 99% full. The only game during the 2018 afl season which had a bigger MCC member turnout was the grand final. If Melbourne make the grand final good luck getting a ticket in the members

There's a MCC offer to MCC Melbourne supporters where they pay a little extra and become Melbourne members too. There isn't an equivalent deal for any other club.

Its why adding Melbourne supporting MCC members to the Melbourne membership total isnt as easy as adding the two totals together.

I think they offer it to all members of clubs. Still Melbourne fc is still the most effected my all Victorian clubs. Last year they had 44,000 members but when Melbourne played Geelong their was approximately 60,000 Melbourne fans and v hawthorn 50,000 Melbourne fans.

The Melbourne CEO has a very ambitious goal for Melbourne to have 70,000 members by 30th june 2019! Melbourne are currently on 38,000 members and are 4,000 ahead of this time last year so they are on target of 48,000 members and will only have more members then st.kilda, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs.

All MCC Members can choose to pay extra to be a club member of their selected clubs. All you get is a hat a scarf and a newsletter.

Well half my Dads side of the family are all old south Melbourne fans. Sydney actually have 13,000 members in Melbourne. Their are more Sydney fans in Melbourne then Brisbane atm. A lot of Fitzroy supporters gave the game away when they merged with Brisbane.

That 2.4% for Sydney and Brisbane would be old south and Fitzroy supporters

There are far more original South Melbourne suppoerters in Melbourne than original Fitzroy supporters.

Exactly. South Melbourne fans continued to follow Sydney because they felt that it is still that same club. Kept the mascot, colours, theme song and history. Only difference is that they relocated to Sydney. Fitzroy fans who prior to their demise were about the same amount of support as the south Melbourne and North Melbourne gave the game away as they felt that they lost their Fitzroy heritage. Their jumper is not the same, their theme song is not the same. There were a lot of old Fitzroy supporters still following Brisbane but as soon as their last Fitzroy player Chris Johnson retired a lot just gave the game away. If they merged with North Melbourne in 1997 I’m pretty confident that a lot of Fitzroy supporters would be attending games supporting the North Fitzroy Kangaroos as they and north fans voted for the merger for only Ross Oakley to shaft the Fitzroy FC and their supporters.
