Sport shouldn’t be treated as competing with Netflix

the heart of sport is competition (ie my best vs your best) spectacle, tribalism and family / friends.

focus on that rather than stupidly trying to compete with online delivery of screen stories which is only going to detract from what makes sport great.

no one is going to be hovering over the Netflix button and suddenly think, hey, the afl games are only 15min qtrs now and I find that more appealing than binge watching that new show!

afl is a ritual that people get sucked into because of heroes and awe and peers. Focus on that.

Spot on. Football should be authentic and that will ensure that there is no need to
"compete" with entertainment forms because football is, as you set out, much much more than that.

But the franchises of WCE and AFC are counterfeit and are, therefore, in constant competition for lost souls (who wouldn't recognise anything authentic) looking for any entertaining armchair or theatre like experience. Any "success" they have is illusory.

GWS is an interesting study. Organic growth, which is authentic, appears possiible. Sadly, GCFC appears to be a lost cause.

Imagine if Port did 40000 cutouts wearing the PBs and then could sell them off $ 10 each at the end of the season to members who have continued to fund the club this year.

The shit we have to put up with, we'd even be banned from printing the PB's on a cardboard cut out.

Actually, we should do it just so they can ban it and look like petty arseholes!

I could not think of a more pointless waste of money and resources than that. Printing and staging cardboard cutouts of fans at afl games should be the trigger for humanity to shut up shop and let someone else have a go.

Sponsors logo would be on every single one, they will be seen on TV and then in the homes of everyone that gets hold of one, probably for a long time after the sponsor changes.

We should say all our players are in the same predicament if he gets a mill, and demand a million for each player. Not only would we be debt free, we'd have a surpluss.

Seen Jack Steven referred to as a 'geelong star' in an article headline.

I think he's a very good underrated player, but he's not a star for Geelong.

He hasn't even played a game for them yet. LOL.

Some sensational memories there, and I can't recall ever seeing `Blossom' Blagrove of `get a kick and I'll ******* kill you ' fame with hair before, he usually had a number 1 in his playing days, but that would have been recorded in 1971 or 72 when longer hair and sideburns was the norm.

I'm glad Jack mentioned that Ian Hannaford retired too early, from memory he gave the game away when only in his mid 20's, and for those who weren't around at the time to see him play he could probably be described as an earlier version of Warren Tredrea.

The other noticeable thing with players of that era was the size of the chest and shoulders of most of them, they may have lacked height when compared to modern players but I doubt they lacked anything in upper body strength, and those blokes were only part timers who all held regular jobs.

Some classic footage, love seeing some of the old day players. These guys were mostly before my time but heard my dad and Grandfather talk about the past players its great to see some faces and bodies to put to a name! As you said, 54, they were mostly built like a brick outhouse.
