Autopsy Round 18: Collingwood 45-61 Port Adelaide

Looks like your up against us in Optus. You usually don't match up well against us.

You done well against them considering you had no Sidey and Howe. Cox looked pretty good when he was targeted in the first half but I noticed they didn't target him that much in the second half I felt he should've been the main target since he looked dangerous when the ball was going to him. Sidey's class and polish would've been useful as Port had the class to wrestle back momentum. I thought Varcoe did the off the ball things well but WHE and Thomas was missing. Moore destroyed Marshall and Roughead nullified Dixon. Madgen was composed down back, Cripps, IQ, Noble, Daicos, were good. Stevo was poor and fumbled too much maybe he's confidence is down but I reckon he has to play against us. De Goey should've been in the centre bounce once Port got those two goals.

I don't know why the team didn't take advantage of Port's undersized backline like Geelong, Brisbane who have an average forward line and St Kilda did where you can maximized Cox's attributes and DeGoey and co can crumb. Your midfield lacks hardness and clearance winning power despite Grundy winning hitouts, bring Sier in otherwise he's going to the Bombers. You look more damaging if you kick it more in the corridor since the top teams except Richmond kick a lot more than they handball. If this continues to happen where Grundy wins taps but midfield gets smashed against us then Shuey and co will have a field day in clearances since Nic Nat is probably the only ruck in the comp who can beat Grundy.

As an aside; one man’s “credit to Port Adelaide; they’re manning the mark very strongly” is the next’s “they just keep running five metres straight over the mark and don’t get penalised for it!”.

We have too many players who lack the required skills of kicking, handballing and decision making, and are just robotic runners.

We have a head coach who gameplan consists of either 1. handballing and overusing the ball as the first option putting your team mate under pressure or 2. predictable slow sideways passing before going down the boundary allowing the oppositions defence to get back in numbers thereby negating any advantage we may have with our forwards.

We also have the same head coach whose match day is bereft of making changes when things undoubtedly will go wrong because of said gameplan 1 and 2 above.

Other than that we're going great guns.

I think you will Destroy us

Great game Port. You were amazing. Thank god you won. Didn’t want you to play you at Adelaide Oval. Game on. Umpires put the whistle away tonight. Hopefully they’ll do that in the finals series.

Holding the ball interpretation is as relaxed as I can ever remember it for as long as I’ve watched the game.

I know you guys and girls are hurting so I'm sorry to intrude but is Pennelbury not one of the best captains in the AFL? I always preferred Jobe Watson types in the middle that were in it all the time, like Buckley and Cripps, just Pennelbury has been such a playmaker for such a long period of time, thought he was going to win it for.you in the first half.

We do have too many passengers. I'd say out of players above the age of 25, WHE, Thomas, Greenwood & Varcoe are always in our bottom 8 or so and never really any better. I think due to their age, I'd at least play young guys as they'd get experience. Even add Roughead to that but we don't have a replacement.

Spot on! Brown was quiet, but I’m okay with that coz he got some valuable experience. The use-by date for the above “passengers” + add Reid is up and they should be moved on.

We're on the improve but it's not going to all happen at once. We controlled them around the ground for extended periods tonight where we would have just been overrun 4 weeks ago - yes the polish wasn't there at times but we're improving.

If we can find a way to beat West Coast in a couple of weeks then there will be some nervous teams above us, as we're not that far away now from playing a difficult brand of football for opposition teams to deal with.

Nights like tonight make it so ridiculously clear that we don’t have a professional full time ruck coach. Which is disgraceful when you have one of the best young rucks in the competition.

We’re using an ex-Centre half forward in a part time ruck coaching role and it’s obvious.

Grundy has no concept of when to grab it out of the ruck, when to thump it forward and how to actually tap it down to his own mids. The funny thing is, this was an issue for him even in 2018 and 2019. But it wasn’t seen as an issue then because his around the ground stuff masked it and the mids around him were playing better.

Absolute disgrace that a “professional” football club like ours can’t even provide our ruckman a full time ruck coach.

Yet Hawthorn, who haven’t had a genuinely good ruckman since Salmon, have Monkhorst there, and he’s doing what a good ruck coach should do. Making mediocre ruckman actually decent. Now imagine Grundy under his tutelage.

I can’t with Buckley anymore man. I can’t.

Waits until the final 7 minutes (when the game is over) to put De Goey on the ball.

Doesn’t try switching Grundy and Cox given Grundys atrocious form and Cox actually tapping well as a ruck.

Despite an in form Cox sitting in the forward line, has drilled into the players to approach the forward line slowly to “wait for the right option” to present itself. You know how I know it’s a coaching instruction? Because it happens far too frequently for it to be anything else. Unless you’re willing to believe that for the last 17 weeks the players have been actively disobeying coaching instructions of course.

Then you have the added spice of our players seemingly being completely unwilling to run, which is easy to decipher when you see the opposition with free players in the backline, only for them to find free option in the middle and then inexplicably finding free options in the forward line.

It’s beyond maddening to watch. They need a new word for what this is.

I told you he wouldn’t do anything until the last qtr, useless. Doesn’t have a feel for the game in the coaches box, no other explanation for his lack of instinct

Win that game and we're going into finals with some confidence and playing another second rate side in St Kilda on neutral territory.

Lose and we go into finals devoid of confidence playing a team who's had the wood over us in recent times on their home deck.

Making up the numbers.

An aside here, I know, but shorter quarters and playing every game at night in shitty dewy conditions has been a massive factor in our inability to score IMO.

Huge disappointment.I thought we’d win tonight because Port had nothing to win for.How wrong was I?They were a lot hungrier than us and more skilful. We definitely lost it in the middle.Losing centre clearances 14 to 4 gave us no chance of winning, and Grundy’s lame tap work was a big contributor to that.

We also have a completely dysfunctional forward line and get absolutely nothing out of our small forwards.None of them seems to know how to kick a goal,or be front and centre when the ball spills out from a pack. It’s basic forward craft but our forwards don’t do it because they aren’t really forwards, but midfielders trying to be forwards. It’s another black mark in our recruiting,I feel, one that should be owned by Buckley and Hines, because they never recruit specialist players, only utilities who are jack of all trades and masters of none.

Hopefully they don’t. Twice they held up play deliberately that should’ve resulted in 50 metre penalties (first was Cox where three Port guys jumped on him after he took a mark at centre half forward, can’t specifically recall the details around the second now) and Port bloke standing literal metres in front of the mark all night but particularly early. Taylor Adams has the right to be seething with his late misdemeanour given how many consecutive frees were missed involving him.

I’m not one to ride umpires generally but some kind of consistency needs to be applied through the year. I’m over the current lack of a dropping the ball interpretation too.

For me, Greenwood, WHE, Thomas, Varcoe & Thomas out for Ruscoe, Mayne, Phillips, C.Brown & Sier. If one of those guys ain't fit (Phillips, Sier & Mayne) keep Tyler Brown.
