Just amazed at the public lobbying orchestrated by Mick Malthouse and now his aging fullback Clement, to maintain the FB push-in-the-back immunity rule. Smacks of blatant self-interest I think. The young full backs have had no problem adjusting, but the oldies like Michael, Fletcher and Clement seem to be having hissy fits over it. Quite revealing. So, did Clement have the best interest of the game in mind, or is he concerned that this rule correction will end his career?

Great, thought provoking poll Parrot. Much more interesting than BF's typically insipid player comparisons.

Reeks of self-interest to me. One cannot be blamed though for wanting to prolong a waning career, unfortunately, I don't think Clement realises it would merely put the temporary brakes on his own, and the clubs, downward spiral for just one more year.

Sticks agrees with Clement that the rule is rubbish, said so at half time in the dons v blues game after Carlton & Fev got some cheap kicks

Supposedly an umpire told the Carlton blokes they can use thier fist, but then the umpires boss Geischen says they cant

The rule is stupid, has anybody currently involved in the game actually come out in support of it???

This rule is one of those things that "seemed like a good idea at the time".

Up to date it hasn't seemed to work very well.

This rule is one of those things that "seemed like a good idea at the time".

Up to date it hasn't seemed to work very well.

Looks good on paper. This is what happens when you get pensil-pushers to run the AFL.

Teams will get used to it.
SOS would have adjusted and still been a champion if that rule existed.

I usually have a lot of time for Clement, but he embarassed himself with these comments.

I want to see the rule in action more, but I don't mind the idea of it.

Totally agree. Nothing wrong with physical one-on-one contests between the FB anf FF - this rule IS NOT about that. What it does crack down on, is the almost habitual way certain full backs (e.g. Clement , Mal Michael), push their opponents in the back during delivery to the FF, to get them off balance. With a FF running at top-pace, it only takes one decent nudge in the back to put them off-balance, and has been very effective. Question: Why doesn't the FB, just go one-on-one with the FF on the lead i.e. trying to outrun him, and effect the spoil. Answer: Some FB's don't have enough leg-speed to compete in that manner. Interestingly, we saw one of them bleating Collingwood-PR-spin rhetoric all over the media yesterday. Quite revealing.

Only certain players are against it you'll notice i.e. the ones that will be effected the most i.e. old FB's that lack leg speed (e.g. Clement), and have been pushing FF's in the back for years to compensate. The younger, faster FB's ain't concerned at all. A good rule.

Thats just stupid, he could adapt or would just play as a forward.

I think its great that a player has come out and said something about this rule, just wish a forward would do the same so that it doesn't look like backmen are whingers.

Lets hope the AFL dont fine him for speaking his mind and expressing a view which everyone agrees with but no-one seems to do anything about.
