The more important figure is how well/badly the storm game rated in Melbourne.

If League didn't originate out of Sydney, it would much bigger than it is now.

I don't think the game is bad, it just comes from a city that doesn't give a stuff about anything but major sports events.

Had AFL and NRL been from the opposite cities, NRL>AFL in terms of crowds, $$$ etc.

Only parts of Western SYdney like the Dogs and the 3 queensland teams seem to turn out no matter what.

Last night's Storm vs Tigers match was great. It had hard hits, good running etc. If the AFL becomes more soft, I can see people turning towards NRL more. People prefer hard games in this country and not softer games.

I agree with you!!! I'm sure if i grew up in Melbourne i would be an AFL supporter (Thank the Lord i didn't! ). All jokes aside when and where can we find the ratings for last night (In Melbourne)?

Australia has 2 sports in the Top 20, be proud of the fact that this country is one of 6 countries to do so.

It also shows the point that a country can have more than one major sport in a country.

With some possible connection, these countries are all either former British colonies/countries (England, Australia, USA, Canada) or countries influenced by the US after WW2 (Germany, Japan).

It is a bit hard to know, could have been <100K, could be close to 500K it is a big unknown.

Footy will never be on top in Brisbane. It will have a healthy niche, and there's nothing wrong with that. We wont dominate unless the sport of rugby league implodes. Be realistic.

I see nothing wrong with any sport wanting to expand. Of course you can't take over a place but provide an alternative. I see no reason why people couldn't support more than one sport/one team. Providing a niche is good. Why should the two sports stay in their areas. If the NRL wanted to have teams in Perth and Adelaide, why shouldn't they. They may not get AFL-type crowds but it would provide something new to watch.

If the NFL wanted a Melbourne team, they could develop a smaller supporter base. It won't take over AFL but it could provide something new to watch.

The history of the footy codes is interesting ; the developement and non developement . Very early , Australian Football was basically a world leader (in the modern day setup of a football club ) fuelled by the afterglow of the gold rushes . It was doing nicely in most states and was in NZ . It's opponent was RU . Bureaucratic decisions of RU adherents led to the demise of AR in QLD and in influx of English RU types into a new NZ goldrush led to the demise of AR there . However in Sydney the fact that RL players were paid led to the demise of RU and AR there . AR had it's opportunities . Having played a lot of games against the British Lions , the controlling body voted against touring Britain . Then when RL came on the scene , there were attempts to amalgamate AR and RL so they wouldn't be competing , thus conquer Australia easily and then (with no RU in Australia and being paid) with a lot of power they would be in a position to takeover Britain with our game .
RL took over Sydney basically because the players were paid .
However the same logic didn't apply to England . I guess it was RU
was so widespread there by then .

It's really the most sensible position to take. Those who think that RL will die and AFL will take over the empty husk in Brisbane are deluding themselves. by the same token, RL adherents like Lebanese Forces are similarly deluded thinking that AFL has no presence at all in the northern cities. Crowd figures prove that notion wrong. Doesn't mean that in the end AFL will rival the NRL, but it's hardly non-existent in the northern states. The profile of the game will only increase as kids grow up with the game and become more multi-codal. The folks with fossilised notions of one code per city will find themselves outnumbered before too long.

Those stats columns are bit misleading.

The live Broncos & Cowboys got 332,000 in Brisbane. The 187,000 figure was for the Storm & West Tigers' game which was replayed from at 9.30 pm to 11.30 pm in Brisbane. The Storm & WT went live into Sydney at 7.30pm to 9.30 pm while the Broncos & Cowboys was replayed in the 9.30pn to 11.30pm time-slot.

In Brisbane the NRL game will be close to being 1st for the week. The AFL NAB game will come about 200th.

Certainly not what Channel 9 Melbourne would have hoped for considering there was no AFL to compete with and the Melbourne Storm are last year's grand finalist being shown live in Melbourne for round 1 of the NRL season.

Sydney based ratings analyst, Steve Allen of Fusion believes that “Obviously if a ratings success, Melbourne Storm matches will continue to be beamed into this market (Melbourne).

He also believes for Melbourne’s ratings of around 300,000 viewers “would be encouragement enough, we think, for Nine to continue with building an audience 400,000 would in our view confirm telecasting and represent an outstanding success, and 500,000 would be more than they could dream of “

I don't think Channel 9 or the N.R.L would be too happy with those figures for the rugby league in Melbourne last night.It was beaten almost two to one by Better Homes and Gardens of all things,and the sad fact of the matter is they would have got higher ratings with their usual Friday night shows like Airport.

Yet you still would have to agree it was a very disappointing viewing audience considering there was no AFL and the Storm are last years grand finalists. This result will no doubt ensure the NRL does not get many more Friday night prime time slots in Melbourne, especially once the AFL season starts. Unlike the AFL, the NRL does not have a broadcasting agreement that ensures prime time coverage in developing markets.

Sell your PBL shares now if they think NRL on Channel 9 will be their great winner against Channel 7 in 2007.

With ratings like what we've seen for the NRL in prime time last night against no AFL in Melbourne, i'm willing to bet any leaguie that once the AFL season starts, rugby league will never get prime time in Melbourne again. Better Homes and Gardens is just too strong.
