Jim has SANFL life membership- so doesn’t that mean he must have played 200 SANFL games? I know I should let this go ha ha
As we learned in 2005/06, to our chagrin, the SANFL includes night matches (Escort Cup) in their games totals. The AFL excludes these from their counts (as they do their own pre-season games).

If he played 200+ including night games, but less than 200 excluding them, then he's eligible for SANFL Life Membership - but ineligible under the AFL's Father/Son rules. It appears that the Michelanny falls into this category.

Gotcha

He played his 200th senior game in 1985 and announced his retirement at the end of the 1986 season, after playing in the Norwood Reserves Grand Final victory over Woodville. With a total of 211. The question is whether pre season is included in the 200 senior games

If there was ever a player to throw a Luke Hodge deal at, I would happily throw it at Bunga Hurn this offseason.

After last week its hard to believe he's almost 34 and at 298 games, he still moves around like the exact same player he's always been. 10/10 for leadership, hard body, almost never beaten in a contest, elite ball reading and intercepting, and firing 60m lasers straight onto his teammates chest.

If WC doesn't offer him another contract i'd take that talent, on field coaching and leadership down back for a season or 2 in a heartbeat. Especially if Talia moves on.

Agree with your take on Hurn. Been a great player and still has some value to contribute somewhere.
But not here.
Most of us agree that we have our own senior players that we should continue to retire or trade from our list. But to delist Lynch for example and then recruit Hurn is hurtful to the playing group and the fans alike.
Hurn would be brilliant at the Suns though.

I wont to say it with 100% certainty, but i'm 99.99999999999% certain Hurn would retire before going to the Goldy. He's a Barossa boy and would be moving home to come here, which is literally the only reason I think he would even entertain playing anywhere other then WC.

And considering we are now the youngest list, and our defense is our youngest position group, getting an ex premiership captain who'se still playing at a high level would be a great short term get for me.

But that's just my opinion

We saw how quickly it worked with Brisbane and Luke Hodge.

Luke Hodge at Brisbane was not the same quality of player at Brisbane that he was at Hawks, in terms of his stats/output, but the wealth of knowledge he would have brought in regards to preparation, voice, execution a game plan, leadership, formations etc etc, would have been invaluable.

A LOT of people on this board are so one-eyed about what constitutes a players contribution to a club on game day. It's almost Neanderthal-like thinking. 'Must get possessions, duhhhhh must kick goal...'

I think if our ageing players continue to contribute to a good standard then their experience dictates that they shouldn't be shunted out of the club just to get games into kids. It's a delicate balance. Some clubs go wayyyyy too hard in cutting senior players (Hawks recently? Carlton?) whereas others do it pretty well (Port, Geelong, Sydney etc)

And that's exactly what Hurn could bring in spades. As long as he doesn't drop off a cliff as a player (which i'm just not seeing) then i'd be all for it.

Would take a huge load of Doedee, especially if he becomes captain next season, which I think is on the cards

Pass, we're rebuilding he offers no more on or off field now that Tom Lynch doesn't already and at a guess I'd say more than half want Lynch gone.

Hurn may not offer a lot more than Lynch on field now, but I bet you he does off the field. Would Hurn ever not have himself ready to play if he was sub like Lynch did earlier this year?

I suggest you listen to some of the younger players and coaches who have been more than glowing of Tom's off field work with his teammates numerous times because you are not only wrong you are 100% wrong on that score.

Whilst I don't doubt any of what you are saying is true, if you honestly believe that Tom Lynch would have a greater effect on the players off the field than Shannon Hurn, I would suggest that you are greatly underestimating Hurn's ability as a player and leader. That is no insult to Tom Lynch's general ability in that regard. There would be very few better leaders in the game than Shannon Hurn.

The only reason I would agree with not getting Shannon Hurn to the club is that we left it one year too late. We should have done it last year.

That would be my fear too, and its a totally valid fear (although the way he played and moved around on the weekend did slightly alleviate that for me).

But there's always risk at 34, he could be fantastic for a season and not change an iota, or barely make it through the preseason. Father time has never lost a battle!

Could we piss Wright off and bring in Hurn as our SANFL player/onfield leader/captain/coach type?..
