i think it depends on how much confidence they have in marshall to be the number one ruck and if any of these guys go past Membrey.

it could be something like:

R Marshall
CHF BKing
FF MKing
Third Tall Sharman

Tim will be 28 next year. If we get Ben, in Ben's first year Tim will be 29, thats when things start to drop off for talls. He would be competing with Sharman for a spot if Ben comes. Sharman is 21 now. So when we have Ben he will be 23, that's when the penny drops for talls and you start to enter consistent football.

At some point we have to play on "actual" results rather than building on "potential". what i mean by that is we are going to have to make a call as to who is going to provide the better forward outcomes and who is going to provide better ruck outcomes. this means we need to make a call on Marshall. Will he be able to be number 1 ruck and provide a point of difference there, if not we need to find someone who can and he needs to earn his spot as a fwd. if he can't out perform a Ben or Max up forward then he loses his spot or needs to come off the bench/find another position/role.

looking at stats Ben is a 50 goal a year forward. he has more of an impact on the scoreboard than Rowan does. Likewise Max so it makes sense to prioritize both in the fwd line over Rowan.

Rowan has a better impact around the ground and in the ruck. so it makes sense for him to take the ruck when Ryder retires. weather or not he can maintain that is another question and weather or not the resting ruck situation is ok is another question.

if i was to throw up a third option... what about Marshall turning into a defender who can also ruck. similar to McGovern when he was unbelievable. Mark Blicavs is another. this allows the fwd line to remain untouched and remain potent. it also would mean marshall has the flexibility to real rotate where needed. be it fwd for a bit. in the ruck for a bit. down back on the oppos resting ruck.
Great post, and lays out my entire thinking, although I believe Marshall can be the ruckman we all want him to be. I know it's sometime ago, but without Ryder, he was clearly in the Top 5 rucks in the league when he rucked solely. Whilst he may not be a perfect tap ruckman, he has weapons and knows how to use them and that makes him dangerous and a handful for any oppo team. He can gives us an elite on all dynamic.

Yeah, BJ was a gun. Entitled to have a bit of FIGJAM about him. I'm not bothered at all about bitterness or whatever. Who isn't bitter when they have a falling out with their employer and have to leave?
bj never wanted to leave. Was devestated to be pushed out. A loyal type of guy and it really hurt him. Pelchan did it and we got very little in return.

He may have been a very good footballer but it's no excuse to be an arrogant campaigner IMO.

I would much prefer to listen to someone with a bit of humility or at least happy to take the piss out of themselves.

Just mentioned we have a little bit of interest in Naish as a rookie on Trade Radio.
We did bid on him in his draft year.

He is an elite runner also which we said we'd target.

He's got good skills and has been dominant at VFL level.

His knock is he is quite soft though.

Spot on , its not needed

i agree entirely with your post. it's a great point and reminder. he has shown he can do it, so i think you have to work to the assumption that he will be able to fufil that role. if it turns out that he can't then we need to address that separately.

i think that's one area we have managed to improve some players a tad. for example Brad Hill compared to his time at Freo and Hawthorn has improved in his willingness to put his head over the footy.

he's by no means a contested player, but i think it has improved.

i think it might be worth a punt to see if we can get that to a required level.

I originally thought our long term plans should be Marshall in the ruck with Battle , King, and Membrey forward, with King chopping out when Marshal is resting.
Not much has changed except we's added Sharman to the mix.
If we and up with another King, we have two who can potentially chop out in the ruck.

I'm not a tool.
I want in! I don't even care if the rumours aren't true. I just like dreaming.

I really don't know if we are trading for anyone this period.

Think we hit the draft and get the NGA kids.

Ben King at end of contract. this year does not fit anybody's timeline and strategyin my view.

Clarko and Ben in next years trade period ;)

Did one of you clowns just suggest to TR that we 'trade' Dunstan, Lonie and pick 9 to GC for King?

I heard that. It sounded like a little kiddie sent a text in.

Then some Essendon nuffie suggested that pick 11 would be enough for Gold Coast to trade Bing.

Why even read that trash out?

TR is painful enough during trade period, but for a week prior? 11 for Ben King, yeah righto, maybe a future second rounder will get it done. Was it Dodoro who called up?

Apparently some people don't understand that putting more turds into a bag does not make the bag more valuable !!
