Let’s stick with a basic rule for this thread, that it’s for draft watch and discussion only.

It’s not for trade hypotheticals, who you think needs to be delisted or traded, how many games you think we will win, some other team will win, how many picks you want in the 1st round or discussion of current HFC players.

It’s about youngsters who are eligible for the draft in 2021.

Key dates to look out for:
  • NAB AFL Draft Combine: TBC
  • NAB AFL Draft: Wednesday November 24 - Thursday November 25
  • NAB AFL Pre-season and Rookie Drafts: Friday November 26

Gibcus? FML.

I'm all in for trading for pick 2 then. We need Callaghan.
We’re going to find it hard to take Andrew, Ward, Gibcus and Erasmus…. All 4 have had people on here say that we’re taking them.

which probably means we’re taking Hobbs. 😂

Hobbs isn't my first choice, but I'll be doing cartwheels on draft night if we read out his name while Gibcus is still in play.

Anything that will add to our midfield will be cause for celebration.

Probably trolling gws for not trading us pick 2 😉

I always wonder how much insider club news is created at draft time to spook other clubs into making an alternative decision. (Still can’t believe we got buddy)

90% at a guess.

Leaking of our interest in Mac and gibcus may just be the start of psychological war on our end to see who blinks first out of GWS , crows and GC. The GC pick 3 may be attainable if GWS don't budge. Crows I believe won't easily budge though, they do have Rachelle in their sights but I'm not sure how desperate they are . Whoever we pick up will be exciting imo , as I and other posters have mentioned countless times before, this is a strong Draft to have picks within the first two rounds.

Recent quote from Rob McCartney - on the Hawks website.

“But I think always in that first and earliest pick is that its best player available more than likely. We think we’ll pick up a pretty good player at that Pick 5.

“With Picks 21 and 24 that’s probably then coming down to what we would like to add to our midfield and forward group.

The idea that a champion team is better than a team of champions is well known. The salary cap amplifies this concept.

A team of champions will want to be paid like champions (see GWS) leaving precious few scraps for the last six players selected. To keep the quotes coming, if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Many have said that premierships are won by the quality of the last 6 players selected … and monkeys will not win it.

Why write this? Because I hope we do not draft based on finding a game-changer with individual brilliance. I want to see us take a player that brings his teammates into the game, runs hard to set up the extra man resulting in a regulation shot on goal. Equally a player who runs to consume space or cover someone else’s opponent in defence. No brilliance, just cohesion and a win. Clearly a player needs to be highly proficient at one part of the game and capable at most other parts. Sam Mitchell has stated that he wants to draft based on an outstanding attribute instead of being a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. It is when those outstanding attributes fit together to form one cohesive unit that the juggernaut is formed.

At pick 5(7), this board is split between Ward, Hobbs, Johnson, Rochelle, Sinn, Erasmus and a little bit of Mac (assuming Callaghan is gone).

We each have our favourites based on footy vision…

But I hope the Hawk’s psychologist gets the last say based on the draftee’s interviews with loyalty, self-sacrifice, effort, and teachability / game-plan orientation as strong parts of their personality.

Newcombe and Day reek of these traits. I hope whomever we select will be no less (champion) team orientated.

We have these good, honest hardworking players in abundance, they are the base of a good team, but we are sorely lacking match winners. That’s what wins premierships. Look at Petracca, oliver, gawn and even fritsch. You need these players to elevate the team to premiership contenders. You can have a team focused style but you also need players who are capable of brilliance and can change the tide of a game

From what I can gather we won't be trading up for Andrew it will only be if he is available at our pick.

Do you think GWS will take him with #2?
This is why I think the AFL needs to move towards being able to allowing kids to be on traded on throughout the draft. For example GWS pick Callaghan with pick 2 and then have a deal set up with us or another club that selects Andrew. Once Andrew is selected it is then announced that he has been traded to GWS and Callaghan to us or another club. This way GWS get the player they want and another asset or 2 for their trouble of trading down. Having it this way would assure they don’t miss out on their target.

Don’t shoot the messenger, BUT theres a strong chance we take Gibcus if he’s available at 5(7)…..
Not what most people would do ,but it’s strongly being talked about at the club.
This IMO sounds like info being released to muddy the waters. Just makes other clubs have no idea who we really want.
