I get what you're saying but guys like McCluggage and Brayshaw were pretty good contributors even in their first season. Not as uncommon as you think. For the non-Martins/Judds of the world, there seems to be two common paths for a pick 3 to reach the zenith. First is to break out year 3-4, slow down 1-2 years and then really cement themselves as A-grade players in years 5-6, seeing that's what path McLuggage and Brayshaw followed.
Mills would be someone who really cemented themselves with a breakout campaign in year 6 after being a solid player beforehand. An older example would Stephen Hill, though he only had 3 years of elite production. Ryan Griffen was another one, taking 5-6 years to really move on from being a solid footballer to a top line one.
That said, the risk any one of these stalls out into the Masten/Plowman/Billings tier of solid footballers, but not in that A-grade bottleneck. Mind you, it's no different to us drafting someone with pick 5.

Rankine was not good until this year
He's not worth pick 5 or 800k. It's as simple as that. I'm not sure we have played this well. Is Rankine our missing link? He is a link but not the missing link. I believe we should have offered him slightly more than GC at 700 with the longer term of 4 years. I think we have gone overboard with the offer. If only we had fought as hard for Stengle who we shipped off without a second thought. If Rankine was on our list and out of contract, would we get offered a first rounder for him?
Absolutely not. He has failed to live up to expectations. Has a hand full of memorable games to his name in 4 years. Forget potential, he is what he is. He is not worth our first round pick. Pick 5 is way too high
Wouldn’t give up that pick is all I’m saying, this draft is full of midfielders and guess what we needAl Clarkson says thanks very much, I've got a truck load of salary cap space here at Norf and Rankine will be a nice addition to my forward line.
Dodoro is also waiting to pounce
PSD is not an option

The whole idea of a missing link is a furphy I think. You build a finals team piece by piece adding as you go. Takes some years. Was Dawson the missing link for the Crows? Of course not - but he’s a good piece they’ve added. He's not worth pick 5 or 800k. It's as simple as that. I'm not sure we have played this well. Is Rankine our missing link? I think it comes down to priorities. Can Rachele and Newchurch get the job done with a Pedlar as another small forward option? We wouldn't know as Nick's wouldn't play Newchurch and Pedlar was injured. I just think giving up pick 5 when our team badly needs an explosive mid isn't the right call. Not saying we will give up 5 but a downgrade lessens our ability at the draft. If GC offered only 650 @2 years, why apparently offer 800@5. Surely 650@5 would have got the job done or 700@4. I just don't believe in wasting cap. It also annoys other players at the club and when they are out of contract they look for a similar overpriced deal. If we end up giving our 2023 1st with something in return to us I think that is fair but I don't want to give up pick 5 under any circumstances. How can GC only offer him 650 for 2 and then expect overs for him in a trade? If they really valued him they would have offered 750 for 4.The whole idea of a missing link is a furphy I think. Rankine by himself won’t win games of football. But he’s another good piece. Not many can do the 3-4 goal and 15-20 touch double.
The value of anything is what someone is willing to pay. If the crows have some salary in the bank, some picks up their sleeve because they want to move away from the draft, then why not add a decent piece?
Rankine isn't going to leave for only $50K more, it need to be at least $100K more. A bit surprise GCS only offered him $650K.I think it comes down to priorities. How do we know any of that is true?We don’t know that he is being offered $800k over 5 years by the AFC. What we do know is GC have only offered a 2 year contract.
They don’t want to offer 4 years, as I assume he becomes a restricted free agent at the end of that contract if he is granted 4 years.
Is there actually an explosive mid in the draft at pick 5 this year to take?I think it comes down to priorities. Same way Melbourne gave up Lever, a 3rd defender for a couple of 1sts, Pickett for a 1st and 2nd essentially and pick 6 for May.The whole idea of a missing link is a furphy I think. So now the season is over, so we expect an announcement soon? Surely we don’t have to wait until the trade period
Elijah TsatasIs there actually an explosive mid in the draft at pick 5 this year to take?
No, Philopou isn't explosive.

No, Philopou isn't explosive.
if the seasons of both teams involved (so suns and us in this instance) are over it can be announced straight away..Probably end of September/early October. Usually trade announcements are put on the backburner until the season is officially over.
Freo got pick 6 and a third rounder for Cerra and their starting point of the trade was pick 6 and a second rounder, which is what Gold Coast will start off asking for. Crows will most likely counter with future first rounder. Gold Coast will most likely take a stand and demand the trade must include our pick 5. Can't really see any players getting involved, because who do they want that we don't want and who'd want to go to Gold Coast from our unwanted pile.Gold Coast value him at 650k a year, that's what they think he is worth.
However, I think our first pick is gone, and maybe then some.
the only problem is that the Suns list is already chockers.. and they have some very good draft picks to use already this season that they need to find list spots for.Put keays in the rankine trade. I don't want him playing in this team again.
There is just only so many Rory Atkins you can have on your list, before you say enough is enough.the only problem is that the Suns list is already chockers.. and they have some very good draft picks to use already this season that they need to find list spots for.
they literally cant fit anymore players in.. especially steak knife one’s..
Pick 15-20 is about right. We gave up pick 17 for Dawson who is a far superior player so a similar pick is likely what it will end up.
Will he be there at 5?Elijah Tsatas
Hope so, he’s exactly what we needWill he be there at 5?
We are being realistic. He is a player that has played half a season of decent games. He isn't Dawson who put together a couple of seasons of quality football. Pick 15-20 is more than enough for Rankine otherwise it's PSD.
