Autopsy Should have Could have - but didn't. Down by 2 against Port

All 3 talls are a problem right now. We're missing Reid badly. Amartey doesn't really deserve to play but we need him as the second ruck, and McDonald had always been vastly overrated by everyone. With or without Buddy, he offers less than even McLean. He barely does anything of note except pop up for an occasional easy goal. And Bud himself looks sadly past it. That was probably the worst game I've seen him play.
McDonald will be awesome in time. Being asked to do a lot very quickly however - but what chance has he got when we are bombing it in willy nilly like we do. The guy has a good tank already - we should be telling him you are our leading big forward. Get on your bike and get out and get it - he is a decent kick of the footy from range, and a good field kick.

We have to start trying to play occasionally to the forward's advantage. You could of thrown Lockett, Coventry and Barry Hall in there tonight and they would of struggled with the quality of the kicking coming in.

Requires all brain cells to work together. He is a frustrating footballer - he does so much good stuff, and then has utterly turgid moments thrown in. Saying that - the umpires call on that tonight was beyond absurd.

Yes to be fair even though I was shouting at him for doing something so dumb that he got pinged for last week and even tonight repeated the action in his next play that was a bloody harsh call. It seems a focus though to call play on even when the player hasn’t moved off the mark and is being interpreted incorrectly under direction for the no 50 for the baulk Handball.

We don’t have strong contested marking options in the forward 50.

Reid is the only one who consistently does it up forward and we know that’s not happening.

You can recruit every elite kick in the competition but you still need someone to catch it.

It’s so sad seeing the bomb into the 50 as our main entry.

And is it that hard for every player (Mainly Ladham’s) to take two steps back off the mark before considering the risky one foot handball.
He switched hands. That's all he did... He moved the footy from one hand to the other... Didn't move off the mark. Didn't jump or shift agressively in any direction... He shifted the ball (while Finlayson still, illegally, had a handful of jumper) then got called play on. Absolutely ridiculous call. Summed up the umpires for the night.

Why can't we have qctual professional full time INDEPENDANT umpires?

Hint: The AFL is too money hungry to pay more to make us an actual professional sport.

Paddy's concussion is a real worry. Looked terrible afterwards as well. Hopefully there is nothing long lasting from it.
Not much to add panicked disposal , poor inside fifty delivery. Had enough chances to put it away but Port missed a few as well. Umpires were really poor but no team was really advantaged by it.
Bit deflated after that ...at least we get a chance to see some new faces next week , might force Horse to look at the set up and change it up.

Rowbottom needs to hunt the ball. He needs to win his own footy. Too reactive, needs to be more proactive. Happy for his tackles to reduce if it means he's winning the footy first.
He is having a very slow start to the season. I do wonder if sometimes he doesn't go as hard as he should because he doesn't want to get in the way of others who are fancier and better with the ball (like Warner, Gulden etc).

He needs a month with Kirk or Jude Bolton getting back to basics. I want the guy to continue smashing players in tackles like he does generally, but I want their desperation to hunt the footy thrown in. If it clicks at some point, he will become a very fine player. If it doesn't - he will plod along like it feels like he is at the moment for a very long time. Really like him as a player, but we need more of him when he is in and under - and like Ladhams, he needs to be put on a KISS diet. keep it simple and don't overthink it.

For anyone criticising Buddy who else would have done better on Aliir especially when he couldn't get a free for what everyone else was getting.
Though at least the last two games show the impact Reid/Clarke had on the team especially on F50 tackles.

They'll probably prove me wrong, but that was such a shocking performance that I can't see us even making the 8 this year. Everyone except possibly Warner (and Florent coming off a relatively low base) seems to have regressed from last season.

But wow, imagine losing to Port Adelaide 7 times in a row. That's just embarrassing.

Look, maybe they will go on a midseason run where we go wow, how did we flip the switch like that...

For now, not looking too great however. See what happens in June...

Doesn’t excuse Ladham’s for putting himself into that risky position to hand off standing right where the mark is. Can’t control the stupid umpiring decision but can control his own stupidity to hand off or baulk right on the mark.

The way that ball slows down mid-air is crazy
The strangest of arcs to it. Stop the side on angle when the ball is about 20 metres out, and ask 100 footy fans, and 99 would say it is going to carry easy. Absolutely died in the last 5.

Oh dear Mills is all that needs to be said about that. But even then - if there was one person you'd do everything to stop getting a decent run at at in Port's team, who would it be?

We were the masters of our own downfall tonight in many ways.

Lol. This is ridiculous. Amartey has one poor game, Mclean is better than Mcdonald? That is fantasy land.
I don't think McLean is better. McDonald at least has some upside and potential growth. He just doesn't offer anywhere near enough for a supposed great hope in his third season. It's becoming a real worry.

Amartey was poor last week as well.

A lot of complaining about bombing the ball into f50.. Did anyone notice just how many players port had in defence? When most of the team is in defensive 50, theres not many holes to lead too
If they flood so many back, it should create space elsewhere on the field. It doesn't excuse braindead kicking into the 50 - if anything it makes it even worse, as its not like you can't see the number of players in there.

It shows a lack of trust currently in our team to be a threat on the edge of the arc (i.e. long goals) and poor decision making. We have enough good kicks to be able to try a lot more pinpoint delivery into the forward line - which comes with the huge advantage that, unless you get it wildly wrong - it is usually to a 1 on 1. Yes sometimes you'll be outmarked, but there will be plenty of times where a disputed ball will not fall to a space where there are 25,000 defenders waiting for a chance to work together and rebound - which hurt us dreadfully last week, and hurt us at times tonight too.

We can do better, no matter how much Hinkley was playing a Ross Lyon of old gameplan.
