Autopsy Round 23, 2023: St.Kilda v Geelong *HIGGINS 100TH*

How good was Hill pushing through what looked like a pretty painful knee/leg injury.

Great player when he’s up and about. I could see them resting him this week if he pulls up sore.
When Hill is on fire like the weekend there aren't many that can play that way in the comp. Line-breaking, gut-running for easy option passes and then opening up the opposition with his kicking or handball receives. That was an incredible performance from him.

It's quite something to watch Hill, Naz and Sincs live. Just running angles and dissecting the field. So different to seeing them on TV

I think we've moved to a much more free running open field style too on top of that. Early in the year we hugged the boundary so hard that you could work out where the ball would go before we kicked it. In the last few weeks we've flicked the switch and opened the field up. We are going straight up the middle when it's open. Looks like he was sharking playing one way but with an ace up his sleeve and now has us harder to predict heading for finals.

Best crowd at a St Kilda game for some time.

King-Membrey-Sharman seems to work.

Impressed with Gresh's attitude to tackling and following up if he makes a blue.

Sinc's first half was about the best half of footy I've seen from a St Kilda player.

The bloke happiest when Rowan Marshall got his deserved goal late? Brad Hill.

The Guthrie/Butler goal was phenomenal.

Teams aren't scoring on us again.

When you see Jeremy Cameron on half-back chasing kicks, you know you've got him beat.

Another balls-out total commitment performance from Jimmy Webster.

As they said in the commentary, guys like Hill and Byrnes that can run end to end at pace help out our defence enormously. They are hole pluggers and make life hard for the opposition forwards but then gut run back to provide outlet options so stretch their defence and press. He's a cherry on top player and that was exactly the right cake to stick it on. He can run around being Brad Hill instead of buying a racehorse to pull a donkey cart like we did under Ratts.

Sinclair had an elite game, that's as good an impact as any player this year has had on his sides performance, even late he's been up the field but then he's grabbed a lose ball in the backline and pumping it forward again. It looked like there were three of him at times. Gresham has been good for about a month. He was a couple of missed goals off having a very good game and he's really stepped up his pressure game.

Sharman is playing a dour role and making it look exciting. He's pretty much a negating forward but he's making the opposition accountable by jumping on their heads and making them nervous about what he's going to do to embarrass them.

The mark (I mean THE MARK) from Sharman, the most impressive thing is he basically stole it from right in Tom Stewart's hands, and he did it easily.

Possibly, it looked like he didn't trust their ball use early in the season. The midfield was there early on and we were still doing it. Perhaps it's a way of training them to use the ball well....making them play within very defined zones and then when you get more of the field you still have the narrow area kicking skills. We look brave and attacking all of a sudden. That forward 50 pressure was up by a huge margin too. He's changed styles quite abruptly regardless.

There is no player in the AFL as good at trapping a bouncing ground ball than Sinclair. He lines them up from behind like a rugby player and takes them low off a half volley at pace and is ready to side step and evade immediately. Got some Robert Harvey in there too. Nas is a very good loose ball gatherer as well.

I don't know if the style has changed that much, it is the same run and gun but due to having our best and most experienced players on board, the skills have improved markedly, the disposals up the wing in the past two games has been very impressive.

The forward structure has changed with King there and Membrey, a much maligned player has steadied us on the flank and gives us many more options up forward.
We are hitting centre field from the back half with Windy, Stocker, Naz and Webster all are good confident users of the ball. With Hill and Wood and Sinclair running angles and opening the field, we look so much more attacking.

Hunter Clark ay?
How could this be correct, didn't come on to late in the first and then was off for 20 minutes with concussion.
Was this average over playing minutes as he would have played significantly less than the others.
Still nice to see stats confirming he is running hard.

Yeah Byrnes was good on Saturday night

I don't think we'd used the corridor more than a handful of times until the last month. Now we seem to be much more open and distributing every where. It would be good to see a heat map and see if I'm imagining it.

They mentioned that Hill was helping the defence out with his run. Byrnes plays because he doubts back at pace and fills hole in the same way. I added that bit on because he's the only other guy we have that can do it.
