if kicking skills are the preliminary selection criteria for great players then why wouldn't you be ranking Houston up there?

Shaun Burgoyne is one of the greats of the game. Better kick than Dangerfield? Yes without doubt. Better player overall than Patrick Dangerfield though? Burgoyne isn't even realistically in the conversation

You completely went 180 on me. I didn’t say primary criteria I said if kicking skills are lacking in a player, how can they be discussed as great?

I do realise at least 4 recent Brownlow medalists can be could be described thus.

They ALL have probably above average courage and hunger for the ball and contest and to be at the coalface, as it were.

Not all players have that. It’s a fundamental part of being a great player. You can’t be a great player without it. Yet some of these guys aren’t great kicks.

They ALL have elite vision and game sense in knowing where to be when, knowing who to look for and how to position themselves to get the ball.

Other players with the most perfect foot skills DONT have that.

So how can you say that to be a great player, being a great kick is the most important skill?

It’s certainly not the most common thing to all the great players of the the last 25 years.

I’m not talking about a direct comparison between Dangerfield and Burgoyne here but:
You tell me which player is going to get drafted first retrospectively if they have speed, courage, goal sense, are virtually impossible to tackle, aerial ability, ground ball ability, can defend, can spoil, can play forward, midfield, fast hands, can handball, can kick the ball a country mile, can kick off his left a bit, and is a contested beast, but is average with his kicking accuracy, compared to a player who is roughly average for a good portion of those skills but has elite foot skills.

Because nobody is picking Mitch Duncan over Patrick Dangerfield

Dusty, Danger and Fyfe are always going to be compared to each other as they all got in the AFL system around the same time and near the same ages.

All 3 are clear Hall of Famers and could claim to be a top 5 player in the AFL at their peaks.

Is one of the best players in his generation and in the 2010's and early 2020's

In terms of style, I'd say he's most like Judd in terms of his explosion away from the contest. Judd had the edge in his cleanness with the ball, Dangerfield more of a line breaker, kicked more goals, a much better overhead and contested mark and did it for far longer (Judd was finished before he turned 32). But... "he's nowhere near Judd!"

He's already the all-time leader for contested possessions and clearances and the way he's going, he'll finish his career with anywhere between 450-500 goals, putting him around the same range on the all-time list as Ablett Jr, Brereton, Goodes, Jesaulenko, Blight and a number of all-time greats who were known for kicking big bags.

All due respect to other Geelong players of my time, but there's maybe a handful over that journey who've had a claim to being the best player in the game over that time and he's one of them (FWIW the others would be the two Abletts and arguably/very briefly Cameron and Hawkins). And - of itself - that doesn't necessarily mean they're automatically the best Geelong players, but it means something. Dangerfield is still an absolute gun, still an AA threat if his body holds up and he was a top 5/top 10 player in the league for about 7-8 years in a row. I think the world of guys like Johnson and Bartel, but frankly, they're not even close to that.

Cannot back up the claim that it is the CFL not the AFL.

So why bother wondering why Tiger fans think that perfectly legal (and cleared) action from PD in that GF is a king hit.

Perhaps, but doesn't his goal scoring, run & carry and contested/overhead marking mark him ahead of other contemporary greats who played a similar role to him? Which would put him ahead on the ledger overall?

And then factor in his longevity. I mean, call me crazy, but I actually give him some credit for playing - what looks like being - anywhere from 3-5 more seasons worth of high quality football than the likes of Judd, Buckley and Voss.
