I don’t agree with this.

Clearly when he was one on one with Hogan or ‘supposed’ to man him up, he was badly outpointed.

The guy had 21 touches though, had 10 contested, 11 intercepts, laid 4 tackles, got the ball basically all over the ground including the front half of it, and it was a clear strategy to try and use the threadbare defence we DID have, to push up the ground and stop the ball getting forward as much as we could and try and attack when we had it, which worked to some degree as we had 15 more inside 50s than they did and De Koning was a major part of that.

You take gambles in football and our gamble was that instead of playing back and letting the ball come to Hogan and Cadman and Riccardi 18 times or something directly and have them kick a dozen between them, do we push up and sit off them and hope we can intercept the ball before they get that chance and just do the best we can when it does get there. Unfortunately when it did get there, Hogan tore De Koning, and a couple of times O’Sullivan and O’Connor a new one.

It’s hard to have it both ways unless the player is Scarlett or Stewart who are among the all time greats, who can be both attacking and defensive weapons in the same game.

As for Duncan I’m not sure what game you were watching but his disposal efficiency was 84 per cent and his 4 turnovers was the lowest of any player on the field with more than 20 touches aside from Blicavs (1) and Whitfield (3)
SDK was elite in terms of intercepting. Just terrible in terms of the other elements of defending. So I agree it was a mixed bag. In most games the punishment wouldn't be so severe, but a depleted defence against a Carey-like Hogan was an unfortunate combination.

Another 17 effective disposals (8th best on the ground) and 6 score involvements off half back for Duncan. Good numbers for a veteran. He has those couple of baffling moments that make you tear your hair out these days, but he's been decent in the 2 games back. More like the first half of 2024 rather than his disastrous finishing stretch. He'll need to be managed carefully when possible.

Especially given the team are still very competitive. It's not like we're going through a Richmond phase.

Funny you mention Richmond. They only got 29k to their game on Sunday at the 'G against the Eagles as well. I think generally most crowds are down on Mother's Day for obvious reasons. Collingwood actually played on Mother's Day against GWS at the 'G a couple of years ago and only got 37k through the gate, and they ended up winning the flag that year, so it wasn't like they were struggling on field.

That’s the thing people need to remember about Sunday looking at de Koning. It’s not like an Aaron Naughton or another occasionally mercurial but generally steady or even underwhelming forward got off the chain and kicked 7. It was Hogan who has been by any measure the best big man in the comp over the past 18 months. It was poor key defending but against a player that good you can have a really good game in some areas and be a bit off in another and pay a heavy price

Horrible draft. Of players taken after Clark, only Phillipou, Hollands, Hewett, Weddle and Darcy Jones stand out as misses (aside from F/S).

Weddle is the type of player Scott and Wells love and Sam Mitchell is on the record saying the they drafted him to be their version of Blicavs.

Correct but weddle was quite raw football wise and would have been a massive reach at 7 unless we traded down. Realistically only phillipou or Holland's were alternatives (and we didn't really need a winger).

Watched the last 6 minutes again. Scores are Geelong 98 - GWS 99. From this point :

  • Neale shot from 50 on the boundary, 1 point
  • Stengle mark and shot from 30m, 1 point
  • Danger intercept at 45m and misses pass to free Neale
  • Guthrie 70m has Dempsey clear on a lead and kicks over his head.
  • Mannagh free kick at 55m, plays on and on the full. Should have been a 50m penalty
  • Blicavs mark and shot from 40m, 1 point
  • Mannagh snap under pressure from 20m, out on the full.

Geelong
7 inside 50s, 5 shots at goal - 3 points

GWS
1 inside 50, 1 shot at goal - 6 points

That’s the definition of throwing away a win!

Well put together.

Our forwards lost us the game in the last quarter. Blicavs technically too, although he was bloody good for us until missing that set shot, so it feels cruel to lay the boot in. Even with most of the forwards having off games, just one more moment of composure or basic skill execution lets them win the game.

All valid points although if you rewind a week and watch the Collingwood match I think there were a number of opportunities that they butchered and would probably like their time over again........and that result could then have seen a Geelong loss quite easily.

As they say with the close ones. You win some and you lose some. Makes a big difference come the end of the season when you look at the ledger with those sub 10 point results.

I agree he played well but he missed a soda at the other end too

I'm guessing the question has already been asked but I'm too lazy to read through 27+ pages:

When is the last time an opposition forward kicked 7 against us? And when is the last time an opposition forward kicked 7 against us at our home ground?

David Hale in 2008 comes to mind for games at Geelong:
