Autopsy Round 14, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Carlton

POSITIVE:
  • TMac was great. Unbelievably composed for someone in his first game in the wet. Kicking sharp and controlled.
  • Reid with one of his best games yet. Involved consistently resulting in his highest disposal total.
  • Dewar was back to his early season form.
  • Bo Allen was impressive. Strong defensively, took on tackles and got the ball out when he needed to.
  • Ginbey was a wall. Dominated in the air with intercepts and spoils.
  • Baker did some great things. He suits wet weather footy where his incredible hands below his knees stand out and his poor kicking doesn’t.
  • Edwards and Ryan tried hard all game.
  • Bailey our best forward.
  • A much needed break to come (for fans and players alike)
  • I can stop quoting the statistic of when the last time we had a player collect 30+ touches
NEGATIVES:
  • We picked a team that was too tall for the conditions. Simmo had the nerve to point this out, which I thought was a bit rich.
  • Poor Tackling and lack of pressure killed the game in the first quarter.
  • Extremely frustrating being outworked (in the first half at least) at home by a travelling team.
  • Another dominant display by an opposition ruck. You’d think that he could out-body TDK but he had his pants pulled down yet again, including by Cripps at a couple of contests.
  • Allen injury. Hopefully not serious. Possibly a silver lining that we can either try using a smaller forward line or blood Shanahan.
  • Hunt and Hutch are consistently too quiet.

Just on McCarthy - how is it possible for him to be that good?

Dude was playing ammos a few years ago, no? Insane that he has been able to either have that much natural talent but not be identified in any system or be able to build skills like that outside of an AFL program.

As he so succinctly put it on Triple M a couple weeks ago. 'I used to be shit and now I'm good' 🤷‍♂️ lol

more and more guys are taking their chances when given it.

18 year olds can fall off a cliff fast.

24 y.o have been in the real world and probably realised "geez if I can make $200k kicking a ball that's easy money" and crack in

I was just trying to explain to you why people don't like him because he's been average for us over his career. This year and all throughout his career he's had opportunities at playing his preferred position and failed it's happened multiple times this year where he's been dropped for a younger player. Yeah people are salty at him and deservedly so and people get salty when we lose football matches people are human. Also nobody cares about effort it's a results based industry you can put in 110% and still be not good enough. That all being said if Bailey can continue this form for the rest of the season i'll be singing his praises.
IF we don’t trade Bailey and
IF he marries Karl Langdon’s daughter there is a chance we could have Langdon and Bailey genes in the kids, the very very angry see ball get ball kids 😜

He’s been poor having to be the #1 ruck against blokes significantly bigger.

His effort has never been up for debate from anyone with a clue.

Also if you’re having a crack after a good game, you just love to have a whinge.
Exactly.

My biggest issue with Bailey in the past has been when given a chance forward he's been a dead set shocker kicking for goal but so far this year when played forward he's having a real impact.

His last 4 games.

Round 14 ----- 3.1, 10 disposals, 4 marks, 5 hit-outs, 2 clearances (Blues)
Round 12 ----- 0.2, 10 disposals, 2 marks, 10 hit-outs, 3 clearances (Crows)
Round 10 ----- 2.0, 8 disposals, 1 mark, 15 hit-outs, 3 clearances (Saints)
Round 9 ----- 2.0, 14 disposals, 3 marks 11 hit-outs, 3 clearances (Tigers)

So that's 7.3 in his last fours games whilst rotating into the ruck.

Credit where credit is due.

Hopefully Bailey can channel his anger from simmo not playing him at CHF for his entire career into his kids to make them into feral contested marking machines.

Even if it is just a soft tissue injury to Allen, if there is a consensus between he and the club that he is going to go at the end of the year they might aswell play it up and use it to more or less rule him out of most of the rest of the year. If the standard recovery is 4 weeks then drag it out and make it 8 weeks and then when we get to the 8 weeks make another excuse. No point continuing to play him and potentially have his market value lessened by injury and we could put the games into a young kid. But that is all predicated on if it is looking like he wants to go.

I was thinking this too.

Im sick of rocking up week after week pretty much knowing its another "L"

I was close to not bothering heading yo the game today. Kinda wish i stayed home.

Kelly and hunt can **** off

Mate, you've been driven to eating a chicken dinner directly off the black-top, you needed a break long ago.

*sorry mate I love this story, its the kinda thing me or one of my mates would do and we'd never let it go. 😂

Honking first quarter ends any chance of this being a contest. Some signs, some huge blows. Bye long overdue.

Positives
  • Did well to rip back the clearance battle.
  • McCarthy 31, Harley 28, Dewar 27 and tidied it up as the game went on. Hewett is sick. Ginbey is sick. Allan showed some glimpses in extended minutes.
  • Harry Edwards growing big time.
  • Bailey Williams. Lol. Ok mate.
  • Hall got stuck in in the fourth.
  • Baker leading our B+F by so far it’s not funny.

Negatives
  • First quarter touch up. Enough said, Mini put it succinctly at the break.
  • Injury to Allen is genuinely gutting. HEdwards sore too by the looks.
    • Part b: Most on here would agree that it’s best that he leaves if the price is getting Pick 2, but some of you should hang your head. Captain might have done his ACL, and there’s 20 posts all going “there goes Pick 2 lol”. Have a look at yourself. Lots of the same people who go on about how the AFL is too woke to do a men’s mental health round and it’s all a big anti bloke conspiracy, then your captain may have ripped his knee again and it’s straight to the “this is bad for our draft hand”. Gross.
  • We’ve only got one game style so if the ball is soap and we can’t pick it up, we might as well not be out there. It’ll build but **** me what an insipid first term.

Badly need the bye.

First five to six weeks were going backwards to go forwards in a big way. Next few weeks we actually built some chains of possession and a game style. Month after that we started winning and/or being right in games through the fourth term.

Need to find another step forward post bye. Over to you, boys.

+:

  • Young players stepping up; Reid, Dewar, Ginbey, Hewett, McCarthy all with good games.
  • McCarthy with an outstanding debut.
  • Graham and Baker still setting the tone like we wanted. If our other seniors played with their heart we'd be banking a few more wins.
  • HEdwards continues on an upwards trajectory.
  • McQualter telling it like it is during his qtr time interview. Was refreshing to hear him being honest and he cares (compared to robot Simmo).
  • Not rolling over and continuing the fight.
  • BWilliams has worked really hard on his marking and goal-kicking and it shows.
  • Bo Allan looks a likely type. Plays with intensity. I'd just prefer he doesn't play so deep back. Maybe on the wing for Hunt?

-:

  • Poor, poor start. Game was over 10 minutes in.
  • Flynn is a poor footballer. I genuinely think I could out bench the guy and I'm built like Brayden Ainsworth in a banana hammock. Gets out-muscled every contest. I'd rather we go with BWilliams and AReid for our ruck combo going forward.
  • Allen's injury, made doubly worse by some ****wits on here.
  • Some lacklustre games from a few seniors; Hunt has been hanging by a thread for most of the season, Cripps is a bit rough since coming back from injury, Duggan being Duggan (wasn't terrible but still), f*ck knows which Kelly is going to show up week to week.
  • Simmo on the commentary hasn't annoyed me he has like some other posters so far this season, but tonight he really irked me. It kinda felt like he lacked any self-awareness. And his comment about us still not having an accumulator mid annoyed me greatly.

You can copy my homework but don't make it obvious.

He'd have to cut Maric's lunch for that to happen.

The kids & less experienced players stood up. The senior players let them down badly.

Hunt, Cripps, Ryan, Kelly, Flynn, Allen, Duggan all useless or barely up to standard. No wonder we cant win

I thought Ryan and Duggan cracked in, the others I completely agree. How Jayden Hunt is still getting a game is beyond me

Trying to find a positive side to Allen and Waterman both being out... gives a few young guys a chance to prove themselves.

Thing is i've seen this through Eagles rebuilds over the years from worsfold to simmo to now mini.

Worsfold wouldn't play Josh Kennedy ahead of Ashely Hansen.

Simmo persisted with the credits in the bank crew.

Now mini wont play guys like hall over hunt or kelly.

I know it's the "we need mature bodies" thing but you traded in baker and graham for that reason.

Agree. TK and Hunt are the two that have to make way against the Pies. Putrid the pair of them.

He was playing VFL (Richmond), then local footy before that? Shows the level that's on compared to Wafl. Was thinking this guys doing what you want our players to do, lower your eyes, don't dump kick, spot up players on the chest, handball+kick accurately, clean disposal, composure etc..and has pace.

But then really he was just doing what most of the Carlton players were doing, he was on that level. He was playing smart football. It says something about our team and where they're at. Hopefully his finesse rubs off on other players. And hopefully Jacob Newton has similar traits.

I don't believe McQualter gets to veto the team, I think it has to be agreed to by our selection committee. And when we've gone hard-core youth first we got annihilated and since then there's been a bit of a focus to make sure we have have enough senior players in the team.
