Sometimes sacrifices have to be made!
Unfortunately, this is the fact we all have to keep in mind.
When a Club near the Premiership window identifies a player it believes will help it take that final step it will work out the difference the change would make, whether (this is purely an example!) losing MacDonald or Mackenzie would be mitigated by the inclusion of Butters.

We as supporters wont like it. The Club knows that but its final goal is Premiership success. Most hated it when we traded Burton to Port (although that's turned out beautifully since he's just so vanilla) but it's worked out for the best.

if we want someone we'll do whatever it takes to get him, and we'll lose someone in the process. That's footy life.

Butters and Reid (once he's developed and fitter) are transformational players. Butters would instantly become our best player, and Reid has all the potential to become one of, if not the, best player in the league.

Imagine a midfield of Butters, Day and Newcombe. With Nash, Ward, Mackenzie and Moore as rotational options.

Snagging either would be incredible. But I don't think we get either of them unfortunately.

I'm not too enthused on the idea of bringing Walsh in - if it is even a possibility or a consideration. It would be price dependent.
To get Butters, we would need to trade one of the those midfielders.

It could be F1, and two best 22 players.

Only 4-5 players are truly untouchable. Butters instantly transforms us into a top two team. Some unpopular decisions will be made this offseason.

Our only untouchable (young) players I imagine would be

Newcombe
Day
Moore
Weddle
Watson
Dear

What round does the Oliver & Petracca rumour start again.

Its bound to happen.

Has gone backwards this year looking at these figures.
Avg 4 clearances.
4 tackles.

You never know we could be interested if he was cheap enough.

Hopefully we're going all in on Reid

Walsh, Butters, etc aren't going to be the same as Harley. Just get it done.

I would take Butters ahead of Reid. Reid could be the best player in the comp if he wants to be, but we simply dont know if he actually does.

Butters 100% plays like he does.

Even if we were/are willing to trade out a player or two, they also need to be willing to go, which (I hope) our best 22 players generally won't be. We don’t have many interstaters who can be persuaded to look for opportunities at home - apart from Will Day who I wouldn't trade for anyone - so chances of convincing someone to move to Port is low.

If (and it's a big unlikely if) we could get a first for Worpel through FA compo that would help but I would be astonished to see this happen.

Trading out young talent who have value is easier said than done as we have put a lot of effort into making sure they are invested in the clubs future.

We can trade multiple years of first rounders this year. I think considering where Port are at, that would be their preference.

Can’t see it happening. He’s contracted and Melbourne won’t trade unless they get a lot.

They wanted to burn the place down when we traded Croad to get Hodge.

If it really came down to it I hope anyone but: Day, Newcombe, Mackenzie, Dear, Weddle, Moore and the Wizard aren't traded.

I'd take Reid for the same price. We didn't know what Hodge would become when we spent pick 1 on him. And Reid is 5 years younger than Butters

The problem is Reid will expect 3 to 5 more years on the contract. That is an insane anchor on any club that takes him on.

None of these 8+ year contracts around the comp will work out. Clubs are going to be begging the AFL for assistance.

Does anyone believe Tom De Koning is worth 1.6 million dollars a year at St.Kilda and do you think he can perform consistently at a level that reflects the expectations that that kind of salary warrants. I must admit I don't follow him too closely but I can say with confidence he isn't in the same league as Max Gawn or even Tristan Xerri.

Absolutely not and everyone knows it, but the Saints are desperate to land a big fish and they are non competitive on every other factor that goes into luring one, so the only lever they have left to pull is cash.

Exactly what Norf used to try every off-season a few years back and never landed one because nobody with a lick of talent wants to play for Norf. Let's see if the Saints can finally pull one off.

I think TDK is a ripper, but needs a hand. However, his recent form is not that solid. Is that a sign he is on the way out or just not happy with the current set up? Two kids caused him problems last night.

In any case, not worth $1.6m per year.

Is he even much better that Rowan Marshall, if at all?

I can't understand why clubs with Good AFL level ruckman would chase another ruckman, especially a highly paid one.

I could see why a team struggling to find their next ruck would do it, but Melbourne with Grundy, Freo with Jackson and now Stkilda is just silly.

Different player to the other 2, could be amazing in the right team, but not 1.6 million a season amazing.

Marshall only has a few years left & they likely want him to play KPF.

TDK is the 6-8 year plan, I'm guessing.

Geez, I didn't realise he was so old. He can't play KPF, so once again stupid.

Get 1 good ruckman and a competent backup ruckman. Than have a few of your other key position players capable of doing relief ruck during games like Chol, Weddle and Nash do.

His game v Geelong earlier in the year was incredible, but he’s played no-where near that standard since

Of course not. In a transition based game why would you make the ruck the highest paid position? It smacks of trying to look good rather than be irrelevant and it’s a huge mistake. Good ball users who can cover the ground are the valuable players now along with impactful forwards and then you slot in role players and competitors around them. The shame is if you look at their list of under 24s there quite a bit to work with. If they adopted a similar strategy to us, bringing in a few fringe players who can become best 22 on the cheap and continue to hit the draft (say move on Marshall for an early pick and replace with a competitive ruckman) I could see them spiking in 2 years. Keeping NWM should be their focus not TDK.
