We did pretty well in 2023, but 20th last year was an utter embarrassment. Circumstances did make it tough for Josh in 2024, but I think it was reasonable that we brought in a new coach. We've had an okay run with injuries this year (senior list), yet there were 12 AFL list players not playing today, so it was a heavily watered down line-up. It was a superb effort to go up there and win that one, and I'm happy to give Otten a big pat on the back for what he's doing.

Yep, not questioning the change in coach, just stating that there are factors neither Otten or Fraser could control which have contributed to the respective performances. Even with the 12 players unavailable today, Otten still had 10 senior players out there. There were matches last year where Fraser only had 3-4, and 1 of those on managed time. I also think we’ve vastly improved our VFL list with the clean out during the preseason.

Agree. I think its more than the coach.
Turned over our VFL list. I reckon only 9-10 (out of 26) remain from last year. We recruited better. Not just from local, but from the coates league. Got some extra undrafted talent. The likes of Mason. Browne (pre injury) the inclusion of Brady Grey for experience. Harry's brother Max seems to be a main stay now. Eyre looks like he can play.
The game plan is the same as it was, but also a healthier senior list helps too.

Looks like HDM played well.

Really? He got a bit of the ball.

His ball handling is very good, so he's getting it a lot as a mid - the rest of his game needs a heap of improvement.

I reckon the kid will become a good player.
I hope he does. But his disposal by both hand and foot is terrible atm. Perhaps more decision making than execution. Not seeing him winning clearance either but our whole team is down on that.

In positive news Mitchell was excellent

Very strong Southport team

Probably our weakest team of year

Interstate

Keep margin under 50 and we have done well
Looks like we’ve exceeded your expectations

On the composure scale, he's about as far away from Pendles as you can get. Just always looked rushed.

I think that Andy Otten hasn't been given anywhere near enough credit for what has been a huge turnaround in this team's fortunes in 2025. Josh Fraser has moved on to another role at the club, and maybe he's better suited there, but Otten has them playing a much better brand of football, and we're winning games. Including today's game, where we wouldn't have been expected (by many) to win!

Stood behind the bench today, and the coach was going off all day yelling instructions and was super enthusiastic. Taking messages through headphones at the same time, from assistants in the box behind.
Very impressive.

Really like the look of Roan Steele. Looks a good run and carry player, who finds the footy. Also looks to enjoy the contested possession, and doesn't shirk a bump or any body contact. Could be a chance for a senior game at some point of the season....
I think Steele will play if his form and discipline is there. See him as a targeted selection for more pace and run as an AFL option.

If things go to plan we're going to have some "meaningless" games late this season, then, or even before, will be a chance to experiment a bit.

You'd hope so, he was recruited for an immediate impact.

Whats up with Howes?

Was killing SANFL now struggling to have any impact
Don't think he ever 'killed' the SANFL. Looks like a forward version of Charlie Dean. Slow, no agility.

I don’t think raw stats tell the full story — especially when you look at the impact, or lack thereof, from someone like Harry DeMattia.

I say this with hesitation, but sometimes you’ve got to call a spade a spade. Both DeMattia and Ed Allan seem to approach stoppages the same way: rather than attacking the contest, they tend to trail their direct opponents and hover on the fringes.

Defensively, neither shows enough competitiveness or urgency to win the ball back or apply meaningful pressure.

Offensively, it's much the same — neither player is making composed decisions or doing any real damage with ball in hand.

Ed Allan does have elite speed and endurance, but just doesn't seem to demand the ball. I also believe his teammates aren't very confident giving him the ball as he fumbles. Harry though, I just don't see AFL traits, unfortunately. He's a way off having influence in the VFL, let alone AFL.

I do agree that stats dont tell the story on Harry. At least from Saturday. Didn't use the ball as well as he could have. Its definitely something thats a work in progress for him
