Review R20: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Port: Like taking candy from a baby

Never said he will take peatlings spot. I said he is likely to fill one of the spots that Cook, Jones have...if he finds form (I will add that because it clearly is a factor, well he selected Murphy) but anyways, all I am saying is dont be surprised.
I will be surprised because he can’t play anything other than midfield and we have peatling and berry.
He wont be taking jones or Cooks spots (especially cook who plays wing or half forward)

Experience is overrated

Considering the league has trended towards being older and more experienced over the past two decades, that's clearly not true.

Experience is appropriately rated.

I love how everyones so quick to write him off. The dude has been off for half a season with an injury. Needs to find his legs. 36 disposals while probably protecting his work rate is a solid effort. He is AFL quality and its amazing to me how people want him gone... for no other reason than to suit their narrative.

He will be selected. Get used it!

No guarantee Crouch will be selected, that is up to Berry.

And tonight, for the first time in a 5-6 weeks, he put up a performance that keeps a fit and firing Crouch out in the cold.

Good:
Jake Soligo. Solid enough in the first half, but a second half for the ages. I’ve said a couple of times recently that Soligo has transformed himself into an elite pressure player, and when you add in his skill level, agility and ability to wriggle his way out of trouble, you’re looking at a damn valuable commodity. Beast, and I struggled to split him and Thilthorpe for the medal.

Thilthorpe. Deserving medal winner, and how a guy of his height ends up being one of the best ball handlers at ground level on the entire field during a pouring rain mud-fest is beyond me. His impact in the ruck in the first half was unbelievable too. A top 25 player in the comp for mine.

Rory Laird. Much maligned but my god he is absolutely MADE for wet weather footy and his clean ball handling tonight was a major standout.

Milera. Was rock solid all night and took a couple of brilliant intercept marks. Many including me questioned whether he should be a walk-up selection this season. Not anymore. He’s best 18 every day of the week.

Keane. Really starting to improve his consistency and that attack on Rozee was something I’ll be keeping in the vault for those cold and lonely nights.

ROB’s second half. He was pretty comfortably pantsed by Sweet in the first half and he clearly reflected on this at the long break, because after half time ROB came out and went into beast mode. The banana goal after 5 efforts to dish it off was amazing.

Sam Berry. Very solid all night and his 2 goals were both absolute belters. His emergence has been more important than many realise.

Curtin. The fact that this wasn’t even a standout game by Curtin’s recent standards should tell you a lot about how he’s going. Just quietly had the 4th most disposals on our team in a 98 point win. A lock for the Rising Star and into 1.50. That’s still overs. Nobody else is in the same post code.

Ben Keays. Should have kicked 5. Ran rings around his opponents all night. One of the hardest workers in the league.

ANB. Just a lazy 13 tackles. His impact on this playing group cannot be overstated. A leader in every sense of the word. Whatever we’re paying him is huge unders.

Tex. I have led the charge on Tex being a liability in wet weather and he proved his worth tonight. Thought he was genuinely good and he seemed far more focused on bringing the ball to ground in marking contests than I’ve probably ever seen him before. Fantastic to see.

Cook’s pass to Fogarty late in the 4th quarter. Good lord what a kick.

Fog’s mark and subsequent lace out pass to Thilthorpe early in the 4th quarter. Sperm.

Bad:
The umpiring in this game was bizarre. Multiple blatant holding the balls to both teams not paid. Then Boak drops the ball without even being tackled and it’s holding the ball? Disgrace.

Luke Pedlar. Look, i like the way he crashes in as much as anyone. But he’s just not good at football at the top level. I don’t know why people pretend he’s good. He’s not. Football IQ is non-existent. Time to give Dowling or Nankervis a game up forward in the absence of Rachele for mine.

Ugly:
Michalanney injured just before a game against Hawthorn, who have the most Michalanneyish team ever assembled. This is going to be extremely tough to cover. Fingers crossed that it’s something less serious than a 3-4 week hammy, but it sure looks like a 3-4 week hammy to me.

Selecting Connor Rozee to captain your club over Zak Butters. Who signed off on this garbage?

Whatever Jack Lukosius is being paid. That’s ugly.

Not sure what Port have done to Joe Berry, but he’s gone from being one of the most AFL-ready draft prospects of that pool to looking like a frightened child who should be playing amateur football.

Travis Boak deciding to play on in 2025. Racked up his first kick for the night with 12.5 mins to go and looked a hundred years old all night. What is the point of this?

Zak Butters getting kneed in the head, staggering around afterwards, and Port not even bothering to do a concussion test. A club that operates under completely different guidelines to every other club in the league.

Jed McEntee kicking 40% of your entire team’s goals for an AFL game. That’s worse than ugly.

The pathetic performance of Miles Bergman every week since he re-signed on millions. Just wow.

Darcy Byrne-Jones. The fact that this guy is a walk-up start every week should tell you a lot about where this list is at. Putrid.

Absolutely delicious to hear Ken in his presser.

Within 60 seconds starts talking about injury.

Then goes on to say that the weather 'opened up the margin' - lol ****ing WHAT. Since when does rain mean a bigger margin?

Then again to injuries - 'They have a really healthy list'.

I for one am very sad he is leaving. Would guarantee the next 10 showdown wins if he stayed on.

never said he did much. Just said 36 disposals while finding his legs is not a bad start regardless of the outcome. Im not saying he will be back next week, may not even be the week after but the final round i wouldnt be surprised. Depends on his form though clearly. If he is struggling, well I would be surprised if he got selected.
His inclusion in the AFL side would make our midfield slower and less skilled and muck with our ball movement. It's completely incompatible with what we're trying to do.

Talent is not over rated though.
You have to have more than experience to get you through.
You’d bring Murphy in because he’s experienced?

Crouch is going to play wing or HFF?

Get off the bongs bro

He can play one position and we have better, his career is probably done sadly

I think he's mentally checked out. That's not how rain works. It's supposed to make it difficult for both teams to score.

Pre game there was concern about how our key forwards would go.

All three adapted well.

RT Showdown medallist.

Tex 3 goals, 9 score involvements 15 disposals.

Fog, pretty handy also. Especially in traffic.

None of these three looked out of sorts in the wet. They adapted.

Compared to Luko and Georgiades who had zero impact.

He cant run.

You cant have a stationary midfielder in todays game.

Berry, even with his limitations makes us better.

Whenever I watch him break lines, sprint from a contest, I always think how Crouch cant do that.

We're way better off without him.

Never heard of listening to people who watched him play?

Look, I get where you are coming from but it has been 2 years since Matt put together a stretch of games, 2 years. The end comes quickly for people and for Matt, it may be time.

I did but you guys wrote off Berry, smashed Ogilvie, and thats when it dawned on me you dont select the side just like I dont. So instead of arguing with me to suit your narrative, lets wait and see.

Wasn't he a second round pick? I don't remember people getting shitty at recruiters for picking him. I remember people getting on his case about fumbling and not offering enough on offence. Valid criticism imo.
