If we take Mellor and Rongdit as NGA then we only have to worry about taking 1 more to meet Draft requirement.

Holmes is the obvious answer but we may value someone else in there that only Wells and Mackie have their eye on.

I’d back in them both any day to find the talent.

We actually only need to take 2 picks if we elevate mullin (but we will probably take 3).

Taken with an enormous grain of salt, but saw this on the Saints board:

“Said earlier in the week I had heard TDK had opened up discussions with Cats.

He wants to play with his brother apparently, things have soured at Blues and you can understand why he would not want to be seen coming to a new club on huge money at the same time our best player walks.

A lot has changed the last few months. Reckon this is a possibility personally. The rumour has come from a player manager who works with a client of mine.”

It's possible but it would a) require us to change our pay structure and b) him to leave a LOT of money on the table.
Carlton would match anything less than 1.1-1.2 (and there's no point if we have to trade for him) and we won't offer the 1.8 st kilda are offering. We also tend not to like insanely long term deals.
It would be something like 6 mil over 5 years from us compared to 12-13 million over 8 years at St kilda. I can't believe he loves sam and finals that much as great as a flag shot is.

Mullin just signed on so I imagine that’s him being upgraded right?
Just Ted Clohesy needs to be upgraded too.

So just need 2 not even including Ted. Jesse Mellor trained with Cats this year already. He will absolutely be a Geelong player next year. He knows the club and they know him and like him.

Rongdit is the interesting one. Whether we pick him in the ND or not. Don’t know if anyone would bid on him even if there was a chance for a bid.

Will be very interesting, especially if TDK nominates us. Changes everything.

Yes & no

Are we selecting both in the ND, or are we going to guarantee their addition to the list where we can try to pick at least one of them up as a CatB rookie should they get they the ND without being bid on?

If we're crossing fingers on being able to add one as a CatB NGA rookie, than we may still need other viable options come the ND

The other factor in all this is either/both Clohesy & Mullin are still on the rookie list as both were picked up as Cat B rookies - Ted has now potentially had 3 years on the rookie list, while Mullin is somewhere between 2 & 3 depending if 2022 counts as he never actually ventured out here. If we're needing to upgrade either of those guys to the senior list, then they could count as a ND selection or at least rookie upgrades used to be able count towards the minimum ND pick requirements

In an ideal world the club is probably wanting to upgrade mullin and Ted (if the latter doesn't want a trade) and then get rongdit through to cat b(given his injury) and probably mellor as a late bid match in the ND. Technically we only need to take 2 ND picks but we may take 3 (i can see us only taking 2 if we trade our first for marshall).

Mellor will get someone who’ll try to take a risk on him in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Mullin as cats_09 said depends if the afl count the year he didnt come out (i dont know the ruling there) but we may want to elevate him anyway.
This is Ted's 3rd year so we have to elevate or delist and re rookie him (if he doesn't go for a trade) and if we delist ot makes him a UFA for life.

With rongdits injury we probably hope he gets through to Cat B

Mellor won't get an early bid with all the other Academy guys that will get bid early but I can see him getting a bid in the 40s or similar.

I agree. It’s just what I expect the club to do

I think even if you dont bring in a class ruck like Marshall you need to get a mature statue league type like Boyd or similar. Stanley wouldn't be able to play a lot next year, blitz is basically 35 and no guarantee Conway would be fit.

If NAS leaves I could definitely see TDK not wanting to go there even for the money, he would be going to a very average team on huge money, imagine the pressure, the fans (all 200 of them) would eat him alive if he didn’t perform. No NAS and TDK would be a disaster for saints.
Have St Kilda got 200 fans?

Ned Reeves I imagine is going to want to leave the Hawks. Doesn't really suit Chris Scott style of ruck though. He values being able to cover the ground more than tap work.

I have the feeling Knevitt is in trouble at the end of the year. If you're being kept out of a very strong AFL team, you want to put up big numbers in the twos.

Because he can run (endurance) I think the club would still prefer him over Stevens and Clohesy myself but time will tell. I would say Wiltshire is in the most trouble of the players that have played a game this year. Then it depends on the squeeze but quite possible one of the the other 3 go as well.

CS specifically said earlier in the year on one of the footy shows that our biggest problem ~5 years ago was that we had a midfield that couldn't run so it is a big deal for him.

It's about balance though, which I assume is what he's getting at.

Back then we had all the ball pigs in the world, but a serious lack of pace and endurance, and even less defensive accountability.

PFD had the burst, but outside of him, it was a collection of Caddy, Selwood, Menegola, Duncan, GAJ, Scooter, Blitz, and Kelly rolling through there depending on the year. All either one paced, or outright slow.

Nowadays it's almost a total inverse. Baz, Holmes, and Dempsey all have pace and endurance in spades, and Atkins provides huge defensive presence single handedly.

It would be fair to say we lack an absolute bull of a midfielder though. As always, preferably with pace, but it would hardly matter either way. We have the speed to cover a Cripps as an example.

I say all that to say that to say I doubt it changes their thinking.

Gun to my head, I don't have much faith in any of Knevitt, Clohesy, or Stevens making it long term...but Clohesy and Stevens are the youngest, and have shown more at AFL level, albeit it's a low bar for all three.

TC may be able to carve out a Lachie Fogarty esque career, and while limited, there is some real assets in Stevens game to work with.

For Knevitt, it's his endurance and his marking. Everything else is just okay, or downright poor.

Unless we try him behind the ball as a third tall, I just can't see how he's viable at AFL level even as depth.

Nah Scott likes rucks that can impact around the ground. He wouldn't go for Reeves. I do think another club will go for Reeves though.

What are your thoughts on Jhye Clark? He looks oh so close to an AFL player. And he's not too small as some say. Same height as Butters and probably similar weight (although we aren't allowed to know such secret info). In the VFL, he has been played quite a bit off HBF recently, you don't need to be huge to play this role (Zorko, Caleb Daniel).

I must admit, I'm not high on him, but I've enjoyed his last few weeks.

I love his intent, he won't die wondering, and that's all you can ask for as a supporter. I just fear he doesn't have enough AFL level traits to make it in the midfield in the modern game.

As you mention, that opens up the possibility of a half back role (he played there a bit in juniors too), but I see similar issues. There just isn't enough elite characteristics to him.

That unaccountable half back flank role requires elite disposal, you're a genuine liability otherwise. Zorko is one of the best, and Daniel once was until recently. I'm just not sure if Jhye has that.

Similar in the midfield. If you're purely a stoppage midfielder, you've either got to be a POD with your size (Cripps, JPK, Fyfe, Oliver) or your speed and/or disposal (Rowell/Butters).

A guy like Neale is the massive outlier. Built like a hobbit, and not quick, but he's got one of the greatest handball and groundball games our sport has seen from a mid.

I do think Jhye's got enough talent and work ethic to play that Atkins role one day, but with Atkins having a few years left yet, and Worpel and Bruhn as likely inclusions too, does that timeline line up for him? I'm not sure.

Whatever the outcome, I think he still needs time to marinate. Another 18 months in the VFL building his endurance, and putting on 8-10kgs, and we'll likely have our answer.

I have no doubt the club will persist with Clark for a little while yet. And I don’t think other clubs will be rushing to come for him.

He needs to build that core so the tackles stick, then I could see him rotating through with Atkins.

Two concussions in a season is a worry though.

We have come full circle

With Rongdits form before injury i think it would be him hoping to get through via cat b

CAP discussion on Rongit was hold him over another year and let hiim rehab and reassess pic in 26 draft year - not take him this year but with the view to do so next 26 draft.

GO CAtters

I like my family but not enough to give up $6 million just to be closer to them when I’m already only an 1 hour away
I honestly think the biggest issue is that not only does is look like StKilda is going nowhere, their best player has one foot out of the door already.

TDK might even get more $$$ if NAS leaves.

I get the “he can cry into his wads of cash” comments but honestly if nas leaves and tdk goes to saints for more money they are still going nowhere. Plus it would mean Marshall leaves/requests a trade.

When they are still a nothing club, TDK would become the number 1 scapegoat from saints fans and the media and probably even with teammates. Not sure it would be worth the extra money when he can still get paid handsomely enough at a good club like Geelong or even stay at Carlton.

Yeah, but then he probably gives up on hope of a flag.

StKilda have the bones of a pretty good team in there, but they cannot seem to click. It doesn't help that Max King has been absolutely cursed.

TDK probably has another 7 years at the top. It's absolutely feasible that this Saints list could do well over that time, but if Wanganeen-Milera goes, that is a massive, massive step backwards.

Agree with this. Blues fans also still get extremely salty about Aaron Hamil leaving at the end of 2000.
