Geelong traded a player they delisted? I know it's only for a pick 99 so hardly a scandal or anything to be angry about...but wtf, since when is this actual thing? Or has it always been? Surely once you delisted a guy surely you can't involve them in trades, not that anyone would usually want to trade for a delisted player I guess.
Yes, I'd like to find out more about this. Who got what wrong?

Contracts expire October 31, they just did him a favour as it’s easier and faster to be traded rather than going through the DFA process.

Hey mods - I would probably add pick 62 to the title…..

I imagine after all the academy and father sun matches it will come in about 7 picks and be in mid 50s and have some decent points value.

Separately… I wonder what will happen if no academy players are bid on prior to 31/32….. do we try to trade back or do we simply just select them?

I imagine we will be able to collect some future 4ths or 2027 3rds with some pick slides if that happens…. As basically we are in the dead zone of the draft where we shouldn’t get tactical bids

Yeah clubs that try to win trade period often don’t win on the field

Don’t disagree but that deal was a bunch of diluted rubbish. The only decent part was pick 9 this year that’s about it. The rest yikes pick 22 which is pick 30 that they probably don’t even use, a f1 which is 15-20…but they wanted a second back with it. Even without the second back it’s under the odds.

They have been woeful in the past but I think once everyone saw the Petracca deal this one had to be as close to that to even get Essendon to talk. It wasn’t close. Sometimes you need to hold players to their contract now it doesn’t always work but in this case it’s the right call

Some fans so Negative..
Don’t trade Players or Picks then?
Stay as is..?

I’m pumped for Charlie & Co joining & changing/improving hopefully the dynamics of the team.

* No offence directed to anyone , just
over reading some of the negativity.

So many different opinions so here’s my take.
Great we got Charlie but concerned of what we gave away to get him but if you are targeting a key forward who has won Coleman medals and is contracted then you have to pay big- and we have.
On the flip side CC will take the best defender, this is an opportunity for Amartey & McDonald to stand up too. If the midfield can get on top and deliver the ball down forward it’s gonna be good to watch.
Rosas is a handy pickup, won’t replace Hayward different type but could be good around goals. Serong could be anything but the fact is the most senior games he has played in a season is 5 and coming from the VFL is a step up. He can play but let’s not expect too much of him at first but he might surprise.
I am not too fussed about draft picks because let’s face it, it’s a lottery. As long as we can bring some Academy kids in.
Overall it’s a massive gamble the club has made but I guess we have to place our faith in the recruiting team and the coach, they are far more across what is happening or the machinations than we are.
One thing I will say it’s not only players contracts that can be broken. Now we supposedly got the big fish we wanted and the playing list is still very good nothing less than an improvement on last season i.e finals pref top 4 and certainly aim for a GF on the next couple of years. If we go backwards there could be a cleanout and it won’t necessarily be players. Cox will have his contract torn up.

Initial thoughts. We're pathetic and I'm angry.

There will be no trading in players over the next two years and we are no chance of matching any free agents we have next year. It's all eggs in one basket and a big rebuild coming when Tassie arrive

We've just guaranteed Carlton are a future force in the m

It'd be nice to get some silver lining after reaming the team but I can't see us making the eight under the current coach/management. We've gone all out for a key forward, yet we already have two fresh key forwards coming in this year and we've just let another go. Curnow's not much of an upgrade on Hayward.

Charlie doesn't chase or tackle much. Hayward was our best tackler inside 50. Hayward and Ollie's departure has cost us both speed and tackling.
Your in fairy land

Delisting realistically means you are not offering a contract to a player for the next season after October 31st.

But as the free agent period is currently closed he would have had to wait for it to open up again and this is the Cats helping the player get to his club of choice earlier for a junk pick.

Happens every couple of years.

We have 3 senior list spots so technically only need 3 picks.

I hope for Rowbottom getting shopped around is a bit of a kick up the ass that lights a bit of a fire in him. Something similar happened to Jude if I recall.
Rowbottom is someone from what he showed when first came into the comp, I probably expected him to be better than he is, not saying he's a bad player or not in the best 23 or anything like that, but I think there's a better player in there somewhere. He's a guy that should/could be a consistent B+ level. Right now like too many on the list his gap between his best and worst fluctuates too much.
Love that he had the attitude of '**** off im staying' though.

Well said. You have summed up my feelings exactly.

Hawthorn should be being slammed for their conduct. Essendon made clear from the outset that they needed an established player in return.

Hawthorn thought they could use the turmoil of Merrett returning to Essendon as leverage against Essendon, and Essendon stared them down. I didn’t see it, but I heard Merrett’s manager publicly come out to urge Hawthorn to make a reasonable offer.

Compare their conduct to the swans, where we were willing to make the hard calls - and we were very respectful of Carlton and Curnow’s situations.

I’m glad Hawthorn got duded. Their arrogance got the best of them.

Is it? Not sure any of them are renowned for forward pressure.
I take your point based on existing reputations.

I think the best way to create forward pressure is to create an expectation that everyone creates forward pressure. One or two players make little difference if the other four players aren’t doing their part.

As long as a player is quick, they can create forward pressure. Get out the tackling bags over the offseason. And I’d love the SCG to cheer for tackles louder than goals, like we were doing in 2022 I think it was.

Same with Geelong to be honest. Since the league can’t tell them to GAGF from the trading period, appears the other clubs did. The Cats can’t have everyone cheaply

All this talk about this being our Tim Kelly moment, why can't it be our Jeremy Cameron moment?
Because Tim Kelly didn't add anything to help with the Eagles problems and Cameron did help with issues the Cats were having

Our biggest issue (midfield) wasn't addressed this off-season. Our second issue was (KPD)

Pretty sure last season's stats put us above average for clearances but below average for converting I50 entries.

Having said that, we can get bullied in the middle when up against big bodies.

If as has been suggested not offering Mackenzie cost them Merrett, that's an appalling misjudgment.
