You obviously can’t do that now. They lock in games to certain rounds all the time.
For example it would never be possible to have Melbourne v Collingwood twice, Richmond vs Carlton would always be twice as would pies vs dons and cats v hawks etc etc.
They do the fixture the way they do for flexibility.
Yeah these permanent fixtures really have hijacked the fixture.

Random stat, since 1991 The Crows have only played Carlton 15 times at home (Footy Park & Adel oval) and have played them away 29 times. almost double the number of times. I think there was a period of time there from 2011 we had only played the Carlton once in 7 years in SA.

iPhone One wasn't even invented when Melbourne last played Essendon twice in the one year.
That's a pretty bad outlier. I think this is an accurate list of the two longest breaks each club currently has between double ups. So Adelaide last played the Dogs twice in 2013 and Freo in 2016, every other club they've placed twice in a season since then. Melbourne/Essendon and GWS/Collingwood are the two notable standouts.

Adelaide - Bulldogs 2013, Freo 2016
Brisbane - Carlton/West Coast 2016
Carlton - Brisbane 2016, Sydney/Bulldogs 2019
Collingwood - GWS never, St Kilda 2011
Essendon - Melbourne 2005, Freo 2019
Freo - Adelaide/Gold Coast 2016
Geelong - Gold Coast 2018, Melbourne 2021
Gold Coast - Freo 2016, Port 2017
GWS - Collingwood never, North 2012
Hawthorn - Sydney 2018, West Coast 2019
Melbourne - Essendon 2005, Adelaide/Geelong/GWS 2021
North Melbourne - GWS 2012, Collingwood 2013
Port Adelaide - GWS 2016, Gold Coast 2017
Richmond - Adelaide 2018, Collingwood 2019
St Kilda - Collingwood 2011, Adelaide 2019
Sydney - Hawthorn/West Coast 2018
West Coast - Brisbane 2017, Sydney 2018
Western Bulldogs - Adelaide 2013, Carlton/Collingwood 2019

Not a massive fan of OR, and having a game in Melbourne defeats the purpose, but all those games have potential.

I’d say the Brisbane game will be Friday night, the GC game Saturday twilight and the GWS game Saturday night.

That's what I'm thinking re the fixture.

I'm a fan of opening round as think its great for the northern states but I'm in the minority

That’s an amazing list and there shouldn’t be 15 years for example since Collingwood and St. Kilda have played each other twice in a season. Like what tha? Then Essendon and Melbourne since 2005? lol

Another MCG game gifted to Collingwood... St Kilda should be trying to make Marvel a fortress
We make more money playing 1 home game at the MCG then we will from most our Marvel games combined. It's a much better option then selling games which we've tried and failed to have any success from.

And since any home final we earn would be played at the MCG, we need every chance we can get to play at the ground.

GWS game should be Twilight or Sunday suits their fans

The Pies played a home game against the Saints this year at Marvel.

I love that the saints will be getting extra exposure at the G and in front of a big crowd.

The fixture does produce some weird scenarios though

I do. I think its great for the clubs in non-traditional markets but I'm in the minority I admit

You can do the same thing without opening round. Just have the Jon traditional clubs headline Fri night (Syd or Bris suit), and GWS twilight
