Which premiership will be remembered as better - Geelong 2011 or Hawthorn 2014?

Which team was better?

In history neither games will be remembered highly on any list. No one remembers the grand final's that weren't close.

In 10 years if people were to watch the game's they would think the Geelong win was better as the game was actually a contest. People watching the hawks win would turn it off after 5 minutes as the game was over.

Geelong 2011 were written off as too old, too slow while Hawthorn 2014 were still expected to be top 4 but had a horror run that year with key injuries and losing their coach for 5 weeks.

Tough to say which premiership will be remembered as better.

Well it’s taken over 4 years but I’ve finally completed my survey about this.

100% of Geelong fans I spoke to said 2011.

100% of Hawks fans said 2014.

Most of the Collingwood and Swans fans I raised it with said “Go F.ck yourself”, while one Swans supporter rocked back and forwards in the foetal position rambling semi- coherently about Buddy and Luke Hodge’s sweet sweet kisses...

Still, the Swannies got us good in 2012.

Geelong by a mile.

Collingwood were a gun side who had only lost 2 games that year + reigning premiers.
Hawks were up there.

2014 - no competition. Geelong sliding, Freo injured, Port Adelaide not quite there but up and coming, Sydney good but over hyped with Buddy.
Interestate team in a GF (home ground advantage).

Geelong 2011, was one of the greatest sides of all time. Did they finish 19-3? (3 losses by under 2 goals I reckon?).

EASY.
This.

Geelong were favourites in the 2011 GF.

Also 2011 was a very uncompetitive year compared to 2014, it was clear that those two sides would be in the Grand Final from about half way through the season (although Hawthorn gave Collingwood a real scare in the Prelim).

2014 was a much more open and competitive season, and for most of the year there were 5 teams who could have won the flag. Hence why 2014 is a more impressive flag, the hurdles they had to overcome are amazing.

By this same logic if Geelong and Collingwood were as bad as the other teams that year. That would've made it as competitive as 2014?

I like this logic because if Hawthorn and Sydney were marginally better than the other teams that year, that would mean their premiership was a less impressive flag

2011 team wouldn't have beaten Hawks 2014.
2009 not sure.
2007 Geelong would have flogged 2014 Hawks.;)
Geelong 2007 couldn't even beat Hawthorn 2007...

Think I put the hawks, but ours was better. Who we beat for the flag speaks for itself.

And geelong beat hawthorn twice in 2013 and only lost the prelim because you had a week off and had extra legs in the last qtr. what is your point?

The Preliminary Final in 2013 was a "do or die" game between Hawthorn and the Cats . Of course we win.

With a week off and your opponents crippled by injury and suspensions to key players you scrape over the line in the last minutes? What an achievement.

This. They thumped Collingwood by 15 goals in the last round of the season and had a fair better finals series

You do realise that was a dead rubber? I went to that game and the Pies might as well forfeited. There was no effort.

Edit. Just realised how old this thread is.

Apart from being the reigning premiers, why were Collingwood a juggernaut?.

One of the best seasons from a team in recent memory and a massive percentage. Only lost to one team. Fair claim to being a juggernaut.

I really cannot see how any rational, objective poster* would put 2014 ahead of 2011.

Swans finished top in 2014 after H&A with a % of 142.9% , 17 wins and 5 losses. Three teams finished with 17 wins in 2014. Swans only held top spot on the ladder during the H&A for six rounds, with Hawthorn on top for 5 rounds, and Port were on top for 8 rounds

In 2011 Collingwood, off the back of a premiership in 2010, finished the H&A with 20 wins, 2 losses and a remarkable % of 167.66%. That suggests dominance, although Collingwood's two losses in the H&A were to 2nd placed and ultimate premier, Geelong. Apart from R1, the Pies and Cats shared top position on the ladder across the year.

My point? The H&A set Collingwood and Geelong up for a classic show down, and for 3 quarters of the GF it was just that, with some experts describing the standard of play as the best seen in a GF for some time.

Why is this a thing?

2011 was a better contest for a neutral, but 2014 was the 2nd of 3 flags in a row. Why would anyone look back at the 2014 GF in isolation? Geelong were awesome in 2011 but 3 in a row trumps a single great season. Just as Essendon. Brisbane will back you up.

Maybe should have won your Kardinia Park final, then.

Just curious. Did you have that impression when the Pies were leading 4.0.24 to 0.5.5 23 minutes into the first quarter of that match?

I was there, the foot was off the pedal nearly the entire match. Geelong came to play, and Collingwood played bruise free footy.

IIRC, we even had Ben Sinclair play across CHF for parts of the match. He is 5'11.

Yes we should. Lucky hawthorn.

.
If that was the case, Pies paid the ultimate price, didn't they. Geelong came away believing they had Pies measure in every sense

Exactly. People forget that midway through that season journalists were declaring collingwood as the greatest team for a 100 years. Geelong was the only side that prevented collingwood from being the first and only championship team in the history of vfl/afl.

Geelongs season was just as incredible. Didnt lose to like round 13. Had two 150 point smashings including the second highest win of all time.

Cats and pies that year were two incredible powerhouse teams. Hawks and swans were just the best in a standard year where both teams had half a dozen loses and a standard percentage.
