Booing has been around a lot longer than the AFL. People get emotional at these types of events and the outpouring of emotion can lead to heartfelt cheers or boos. It might be poor form to boo at times, but what are you going to do? Turn everyone into nice little robots that only show the right emotions at the right times? Have we become so politically correct that the social justice police can now dictate what feelings we're allowed to show and when?

Well to that I say....

On another note this is the first time I've seen my son so passionate about the game. He was on the edge of his the whole time, he was extremely upset straight afterwards, and then he proceeded to play our theme song for about an hour. I didn't curb his emotions, I just let him enjoy the whole thing even though we lost.

Slightly off topic but there is a real pent up frustration in a lot of us after no success in the last 15 years and that saga crap. Supporters deep down are really still hurt they way the AFL treated us...and especially what we copped from opposition supporters and media...7 days a week non stop for what felt like forever.

You just want to go to the footy and enjoy yourselves but every time we feel like we are getting somewhere there is always something that gets in our way. Last year it was injury. Yesterday you could feel how worried we were after the late out of Raz before it even started. Then not a lot went our way..especially with the umps and that is not just us being biased. The amount of opposition BF members posting in our autopsy thread on how we were robbed is large. It feels like if we hit our targets we would have done it, so we can blame ourselves as well.

So we got off to a poor start..but we fight back and nearly get there. There were 50,000 of us on edge..i am not surprised things went sour after the game. After we lose we boo the umps..happens nearly every game all teams. And then that COOOLLLIINNGGWOOOOOOD chant starts. It honestly feels like they are rubbing your nose in the dirt when they do it. So the booing amps up to drown that shit out and make a stand. I feel the booing was not aimed at pendles (although there are dh supporters in every team and some would have booed him)...but just carried over.

It was not great but I can understand it.

I really feel like the media and Collingwood supporters have missed the point. It was not Pendles as the main target. Just a mob of extremely pissed off people. I would rather harmless booing than what happens overseas in soccer. Would have been a bloody riot.

I really do not care anymore what others think off us. Their opinion does not count. If you want to boo...boo. If you do not want to boo don't. I am totally sick of media etc. getting into us. They can all f#$k off. The more the go on about it the more people will boo.

Just my thoughts.

Agree.

I would also add that if blame is to be apportioned, the AFL should get the lion's share for making this game second only to the GF in terms of intensity and emotion and then failing to deliver with its umpiring standards. The AFL have manipulated the emotions of supporters of both clubs, and of the league by linking AFL to the Anzac spirit and then, when emotions spills over, cretins like Gerard Whateley, say the CEO of the EFC should apologise (to whom?) for the negative emotion fans expressed after the game. The fans were reacting to the GAME they had paid to see. The significance of the ANZAC tradition that attaches to this game is entirely the creation of the AFL's marketing of it as a marquee game.

I loved your full post but these parts I wanted to highlight.

I can't stand their coollliinnggwwoodd chant and i love when our supporters drown it out with other noise.

it reminds me of these reality tv shows.... a whole media industry has popped up that feeds off them.

its a set standard... psych test a bunch of crazy narcissists, put them in a house together, get them drunk, poke them with challenges or make them fall in love with weird others.. turn the camera on and wait - they know what they will get, and each day they get to report the shocking findings!

AFL footy is no different.. put a bunch of people in a pressure cooker, add alcohol, toy with their emotions, then wait for the result... now the attached media have their material

Was directed at the Umpires just didn’t help that Pendles flopped at the end of the game.
That’s for the umpires to work out though isn’t it, not Pendlebury’s fault the umpires can’t follow the play. Everyone at the ground and those viewing at home could see it wasn’t a free except for those adjudicating the game. If they’re not going to pay Walla for too high then they can’t pay Pendlebury for ducking. I assume it was the same umpire given similar areas of the ground. Anyways, the facts are Collingwood won the game, deservedly, and umpires aren’t going to get any better.

Not only that but the supporters have paid a premium to witness the spectacle. It'd be different if the AFL were paying them!

Buckley shocked the supporters and the boos stopped. They tried to start up again and were drowned out by the Ponsford stand slow chant. It'll be a proud moment pie fans remember for years.

Rewriting history there mate. The boos weren’t drowned out.

"We've become a bit of a nanny state," Beveridge said at Melbourne Airport on Friday.
"Pendles is a champion and so is Bucks, but I must admit I did have a chuckle after Bucks sort of challenged whoever was booing. They showed the Essendon crowd and the response was a harder boo. It was funny, I see the lighter side of it.
"The game is tribal, supporters of both teams are there absolutely emotionally drained at the end of the game. Booing is part of the game, it's not ideal but it's just there."

I think it was a hangover from some pretty average umpiring.

It certainly did not cost us the game but there were still enough of our classless, racist, nuffie supporters still there to take it out on a bloke who deserved applause for a bloody good game.

I thought Bucks was spot on the money with his comments.
...I agree with the exception of booing the umpiring. It was atrocious.

So you’d be all cool if Collingwood fans booed Hird after an ANZAC game?

The umps did shocking calls both ways, pretty ordinary to boo and it was coming directly from the Ess cheer squad so they can’t blame non members or some other excuse.

You were never in the lead during the entire game and yet I’m in some bizarro world where you were robbed.

Both ways? We got r*ped. 15 to 2 mistakes doesn't mean both ways. It was one way and we lost simply because of it.

I hope we boo the hell out of every bloody cheat. Umpires, AFL, Bucks Pendles or Eddie....they are all in on this. It was Buckley's attempt to deflect the real issue. Match fixing and paying off the umpires.

We should boo the returned service men and then boo during the minute of silence next year. Really show them how classless and out of kilter we are.

Absolutely they were. You probably sit in the Olympic and were surrounded by fellow booers. From a position between the two stands i can assure you "Collingwooood" came through much louder (and certainly prouder) once Bucks was done.

And what's more, they will fondly remember the moment far longer than the rabble rousers of the Olympic stand. "Remember that time we lost but let everyone know we were pissed off about it?" isn't something you should want to fix your hat on.

Nice strawman... people were very emotional and unhappy after the game and showed those emotions by booing. Keep the discussion on that. To suggest that's the same as booing the servicemen or during the minutes silence is a shit thing to say.

Nobody booed Goodes louder than us

This is my favourite kind of booing, right before an opposition shot on goal with the crowd swaying left and right to try and put them off. And then the big cheer when they miss 😂 Talk about turning your home into a fortress. They know exactly whose turf they're on that day.

Always fun on the other side of it when you kick the goal as well.

Sarcasm noted and you were shafted by the umpires but surely the booing of umpires stops when they leave the field?
To persist with the booing during the ceremony and speeches , particularly when the head of the RSL is presenting the medal to a worthy recipient is tasteless and self entitled.
Surely it's not too much to park your understandable frustration and respect the final part of the Anzac day game?

or maybe the powers that be on the ground could have a feel for the moment and wait a minute til it died down a little?

did they think handing the medal over was going to stop the booing?

just pour more petrol on the fire!!

would only have taken 30 secs til it died off
