Autopsy Round 20, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Fremantle

Positives - Ryan's mark of the year contender

I actually liked Hutchinsons work today. Took the easy options and did the basics well. He gets to the right positions, just needs to hit his targets by hand and foot.

Negatives - spud Owies spudding it up. He is one of WCE weakest links. Can we give his spot to Long or Newton.

We’ll get a good draft hand and hopeful bring in some talent. Hard to see any of them really moving the needle.

Improvement needs to come from what’s on the list already, and it’s pretty dire, Ginbey can’t kick more than 5m, Hewett acts like a Chad, but doesn’t really impact games, Brockman is in and out, Hough works hard but probsbly not a mid.

It’s scary how little quality we have on our list.
I disagree. There is plenty of talent on the list that at other clubs would be looking much better because they wouldn't be trying to do the heavy lifting. All the players you mentioned are developing well, and being asked to do a lot.

The lack of any kind of senior support both on field and at training is our Achilles heel. Drafting another 5 or 6 good kids this year will be great but until they're all 24+ they won't be consistent.

Never seen a midfield situation quite as dire. I know Hewett and Harley and Hall and Hough will continue to develop but the reality is our mids top out at about 15 touches a game most week. And we have the worst ruck division possibly ever seen in the professional era.

Said in the thread but we have to trade into some good senior mids somehow. And we have to do it this off season.

If we get Dyson Sharp fine but we're still 5 years away from being able to compete consistently with the best midfield groups and we don't have that time to wait.

If we can't get Warner in 2 years we have to get someone else.
5 years is being Chicken Little

I agree we are at least 2 draft cycles and list refreshes from being contenders when guys like hewett and harley have over 50 games into them. We desperately need a competitive ruck would be nice if they were competent but i'd take competitive.

Pos
  • Kelly and Baker.
  • Backs did well considering the amount of ball coming in
  • Jobes hands
  • Ryan’s mark
  • Hewett doing the MJ and talking shit before he drills the goal.
  • Held them ok considering we are missing our spine (Edwards,Gov,Yeo,Oscar,Snake)a
  • Not letting them get deep entries and forcing difficult shots. We missed easier ones, Ryan x2, Hewett.

Neg
  • Let’s hope the list team don’t avoid helping the midfield. Fix that midfield and you go along way to fixing a lot of issues.
  • Definitely changed out style, not sure if that’s the right decision due to so many poor kicks and players who ain’t composed enough.
  • The clearances and how easy they ran out of them at times.

The way we setup at stoppage is so frustrating because every time you see the oppo position themselves goalside and then break forward once they win first possession - but our guys just let it happen so they run it out with ease because they are already 5m away from their man.

Hello Luke Shuey - what is your job again?

POSITIVES

7 Goals from players who rotated through the middle today

Reid 2
Kelly 2
Baker 2
Hewett 1

I can't remember the last time we saw that. We also didn't roll over after a horrible first and a bad last. Was worried we might.

NEGATIVES

Not going to nitpick too much today, same turnovers and mistakes but expect over time they will become less and less.

But i do have one. Matthew ****ing Owies.

Remember when WCE_Phil proudly put a feather in his own cap crowing about how this was his masterstroke of trade week and most of us sat there scratching our heads wondering what the **** we were doing?

Happy Simon Cowell GIF by America's Got Talent

I'm genuinely serious here. Do you think Carlton would take him back if we paid his contract?

At this point the list spot is more valuable than this Kipfler.

The pressing thing for mine is the development aspect. The beagles needs to be killed off. The kids aren’t developing in that team, it’s killing the culture of the club losing week in, week out.
Wish I could like this twice. Need to cut our losses and go back to East Perth. Cant develop kids in a side worse than we are.

It doesn't help with our first rounders since turning to shit we've grabbed two midfielders, a HBF, a HBF with midfield potential (despite the off-field changes), and a dud.

When we ended those seasons with picks 14 (?), 2, 1, 3.

Would like to know why we're trying Baker anywhere that isn't the middle.

Didn't get blown away and no significant injuries is an okay result.

Good to see harley keep his head up after a few umpire troubles in Q1.

Would like to see Dewar out of the vest and in the 22.

Brock has been a very good pick up. Can run, kick, and defend. Considering he was an SSP selection it's pretty impressive.

Hello Luke Shuey - what is your job again?
We're still playing Simmoball where we put a bloke on the defensive side of the stoppage. It doesnt work, because we cant tackle and cant win the contested ball.

I said before that Shuey needs to be shown the door and got howled down, so expect to get shot for your opinion.

Honestly, it’s been said before but I think it’s time for Schofield and shuey to go at the end of this season. Sure, we don’t have the cattle but you can be shit and still make things hard for your opponent.

Opposition players take on step an all of a sudden theyre all 3m away from our player streaming forward overlapping.

Too many players on our team lose their feet far too easily, too many players can’t pin arms and stick the tackle, yet our players go to water with any defence in front of them.

That’s desire that’s want to win the contest and we just don’t have it in far too many players.

Hall improving, given how hard he worked this past offseason I’m optimistic of what he’ll be after another summer, just needs to build the tank and find a defensive component to his game.

Umpiring atrocious but it’s the afl. Same old passengers happy to make one contribution for the day and consider it a good game.

We need more dynamic players with weapons to their game. I really hope we prioritise this over chasing Fred Rodriguez at this draft because he’s from WA.

Positives: mostly happy with how everyone played today (except Owies)
Negatives: Watching Murphy Reid tear it up please God Bo come good we deserve it
Tbf there's no guarantee Murphy would have extended as he as at Freo given how shit we are.
He wouldn't be close to being as happy at the worst team in the comp compared to a contending team.
If we continue this way for the next 2 seasons and he doesn't extend, he could become Reid 2.0 with constant speculation about whether he's going home.

I haven't looked at the stats but i'm sure we lost the stoppage battle by a significant percentage. Although I think we are set up to shark ruck taps rather than receive our own.
