What part of his game isn't where the game is going? Genuinely curious
Not fast. Not a good kick. Not great vision. Not a huge contested beast. A player like that that was ok at getting decent amount of ball but not much else might have had a place in many teams in the past. But in my view these days you've got to look at every role as quite specialised. Players who can play many roles at a high level are obviously gold. Players who can only play one role and not really excel at it are very limiting.

All the rule changes are trying to stretch the game further and further.

That puts more focus on transitioning the ball and less on just winning it. It also means power running to outnumber at each end of the ground is important.

Worpel is good at winning the ball but an ordinary user and not a great transition runner. He's ok defensively but not elite like Atkins at stopping the opposition.

Wines is a similar but better player and we absolutely feasted on his weaknesses on the weekend.

With Rongdits form before injury i think it would be him hoping to get through via cat b

More the injury than the form but yes that would be the hope as with how Ted got through.

He's not Nasiah or Max Holmes. They are the prototype midfielders now.

All good sides have at least one big good inside mid now they just have to be able to run (ala Josh dunkley). Worpel seems fine enough in that regard.

Does the chase of Worpel suggest the club is cutting losses on Jye Clark and T Bruhn
More like they're now in the box of 'If they come good, it's a bonus' rather than being relied upon in plans going forward.

Others are more in danger of getting the immediate chop anyway in a couple months.

Clark-no. It suggests that Clark needs time to build his body which is obvious.

Bruhn-no the club will not 'cut losses' with him because they dont want to be sued. However we need another inside mid in the event bruhn isn't cleared to be back for round 1 next year we can't waste the flag window waiting. So bringing in worpel is fine in that context. It's a role player acquisition.

Yeah, looks like I was wrong here though. If we are matching the Hawks offers it’s a step further than I was told we would go. I’m not a fan of it personally.

Which other inside mid would you bring in this year who is a decent free agent and cost no picks? I think he's the best of a thin market personally. I'd prefer him 1000 times before Oliver.

Not joyous news if your surname is Knevitt Clark Clohesy or Bruhn

Clark it doesn't affect because he needs time physically and atkins will be 31 next year.

Bruhn is irrelevant because he's stood down and will be on our list until 2027 either way.

But yes its bad news for Ted that said I expect he would be wanting a trade even if worpel doesn't come.

Highlighted isnt guaranteed if things end badly for him.

Worpel certainly doesn’t get me to excited however we do need another extractor and defensive mid
We have plenty of pace around the ball just need players to get it to them.

He is not looking to good at the moment but l suspect that’s because of the roll he is asked to do at Hawthorn

That's on the assumption the case is resolved before 2027 (and the legal system is slow). If it isn't he will be on our list but stood down on full pay (as he should be in that scenario).

I don't think Worpel is a gun, but if it's on average coin this is not a bad deal. He has some dog in him.

He is a poor user of the ball but as others have said his entire role will be to operate at the coalface alongside Atkins and feed it to Holmes and Smith.

It's not a sexy name but you need to build a balanced blend and probably more often than not over the past 24 months we have been found wanting at the coal face.

He's not slow either, not blistering but certainly not a plodder.

We aren't going to overpay and he wont cost any picks.

Bruhn's absence has hurt us this year. If we progress the midfield to the stage where Worpel is the last mid picked every week but he's good for 4/5 clearances and 20 touches a game we are looking strong.
