News Port passes on Jaidyn Stephenson

'Pretty good chance'? He's pretty much at the top of the depth chart for his position lol.
If anything happens to Mitch he's got a 'pretty good chance' of being our leading goalkicker, let alone making our 22.

Hopefully the club choose to put him on our list before the 14th of Dec.

It will do his confidence a world of good over the festive break.

They can let him know that's what they are going to do, but if we sign him, then we have to drop off one of the train-ons because clubs can only have 2 train ons per vacant spot.

We're better off keeping all three competing against each other and then convincing the two that miss out to stay with us via the Magpies with a promise to consider in the 2026 MSD.

Interesting, do the SSP’S get paid?

What’s stopping another club from cutting our lunch over the break?

Nothing. Melbourne SSP'ed Jack Henderson last year while he was training with West Coast.

As a junior he played a bit like Dempsey in that wingman who pushed hard forward and kicked goals role. I wonder if that’s how Carr will look to deploy him? Beats Wines/Drew/Mead rotating on one wing.
I reckon part of the reason for bringing in Watkins and Wehr, and for developing Moraes, is that Carr has identified the need for more elite long-distance runners, especially after losing Amon.

With a young list, some of the “bomb it on Charlie’s head” tactics and forward presses were probably just a way to hide the fact we can’t run out a full game yet.

Endurance improves with age, so players like Burgoyne, Jones, JHF, and maybe Sinn should keep getting better each year.

Being able to run harder and longer means getting to more contests and creating more space, which is key for transition footy.

If you could see other clubs’ running numbers, I reckon ours would look pretty modest in comparison.

I’m not sure how Stephenson would go on the wing, but having faster players with better kicking and endurance—rather than slower ones like Drew, Wines, and Boak—would make a huge difference to a more modern game plan.

I'm with Kane

I just don't get it

One of the biggest squibs I've seen play AFL football. And I was here for Lonie!
We dont have depth in that position.

It's a free hit, and he's immediately our most talented small forward.

I haven't read Kornes comments about Stephenson but from memory it was him who recommended Lonie to Choco (because of his kicking skills), which has to make me wonder about the motive behind a `shock jock' who IMO became a seagull himself in his last few seasons at the club wanting to nail another player with apparently similar traits.

It was none other than Russell Ebert who nailed Lonie's major weakness very early when he was calling the blokes first trial game for Port and I heard him say, `there is no doubt Nathan Lonie is a very good kick of the footy, but he has to learn to get the ball himself!'

Each to their own opinion of course, but Lonie is still the softest player I have ever seen represent the PAFC (at any level) so Stephenson would have to reach a new level of soft for me to change mine.

The idea that a train on player could have a negative impact on a team's overall performance is just silly in general.

Most of the time anyone that's been passed on in the draft and comes through in the SSP is just a hail mary crack who will likely be de-listed in a couple of years.

Having Jaidyn, a rising star winner and 2x 22 under 22 player on our list over a blank list spot or another player who couldn't make it in the draft, is the biggest free hit in the history of free hits.

If it comes off he is our best small forward by a decent margin. If it doesn't come off we missed the chance to see BOB2 run around in the SANFL for a year or two.

Save the criticism for the big name players who are taking in big money on lengthy contracts and cost us serious capital to attain that don't perform (not that I'm saying this about anyone in particular, just as a general rule).

Geelong have found a few diamonds in the rough, guys that have been overlooked multiple years from other clubs or have been at other afl clubs and been poor but thrived at Geelong.

Why can’t McKinlay work out for us like Shaun mannagh as an example.

Or why can’t Stephenson make the most of a second chance like Stengle did?

I’m pretty certain Stephenson coach last year said he worked a lot on improving his contested game, which he obviously was aware was a deficiency in his game and as the season wore on he became very good at winning his own ball and being more defensive.

And being an ex afl player he would’ve copped a lot of physical attention in ammo’s.
