Buchsbaum's impressions of Week Five games

Arizona at Carolina - Oct. 6, 2002

Both are gutty, overachieving and extremely well-coached and motivated teams. Arizona wins a close game on a long field goal. The Cardinals’ defense is playing over its head. On offense, they still have to get QB Jake Plummer going on a more consistent basis.

Baltimore at Cleveland - Oct. 6, 2002

Chris Redman seems to be coming of age as a quarterback, but he still needs more weapons. The only weapons he has are Jamal Lewis, who looked like the Lewis of old vs. the Browns, and Todd Heap at tight end. None of the wide receivers really has stepped up. On defense, when Ray Lewis was in there, the Ravens looked like they had the defense of old. After he left, they gave up some plays, but they still made the big play when they had to. I think the unsung hero in all of this is defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who has done just a fabulous with a defense that has so many young players. The defense has come up with so many big plays in the past couple of weeks. As for Cleveland, right now they have a full-blown QB controversy. It’s obvious that Kelly Holcomb is going to be the people’s choice, and Tim Couch has had a hard time sparking this offense.

Cincinnati at Indianapolis - Oct. 6, 2002

The Colts are a good team. They controlled the game; Peyton Manning was sharp. Cincinnati doesn’t have the firepower other than RB Corey Dillon, and now it is a team that has a loser’s mentality.

Kansas City at NY Jets - Oct. 6, 2002

A very offensive game. Trent Green was very good at quarterback for Kansas City and Priest Holmes is just out-of-this-world at running back. For the Jets, Curtis Martin looked like the Curtis Martin of old. It was almost like a game where the team that had the ball last was going to win. Kansas City scored on its last drive and won the game.

New England at Miami - Oct. 6, 2002

The Patriots had a really tough first half offensively and got themselves in a hole they could not get out of. For Miami, Jay Fiedler played well and is a much better quarterback when he is playing ahead. Ricky Williams gained more than 100 yards but averaged less than three yards per carry.

NY Giants at Dallas - Oct. 6, 2002

This game could have gone either way, but Quincy Carter missed a wide, wide open Antonio Bryant, who was open for a touchdown at the end of the game, and that was the difference. Kerry Collins played better for the Giants and the team ran the ball better.

Oakland at Buffalo - Oct. 6, 2002

Started out as a wild shootout until Raiders CB Phillip Buchanon had a key interception that turned the game around in the Raiders’ favor. Drew Bledsoe and Rich Gannon are two of the hottest quarterbacks in football, perhaps the two hottest, right now. But Bledsoe ended up throwing three interceptions, and that was the difference.

Philadelphia at Jacksonville - Oct. 6, 2002

Tom Coughlin is doing a terrific job with this team. Getting RB Fred Taylor back makes a huge difference on offense, and the defense is playing well. The Eagles have a tendency to let up at times. They tried to rally at the end but they were too far behind.

Pittsburgh at New Orleans - Oct. 6, 2002

New Orleans is an outstanding team that is hitting on almost all cylinders on offense. Deuce McAllister is running extremely well. After a shaky start, Tommy Maddox came on and played very well for Pittsburgh. The Steelers finally started to get Jerome Bettis going a little bit.

San Diego at Denver - Oct. 6, 2002

Simply dominance by Denver. The Broncos looked like the best team in the NFL one week after laying an egg against Baltimore. Brian Griese was extremely sharp, especially in the first half. The Broncos did an excellent job of taking LaDainian Tomlinson out of the game and forcing Drew Brees to win the game throwing. At this point, Brees is not capable of doing that.

St. Louis at San Francisco - Oct. 6, 2002

The 49ers were dominant. The Rams had an unbelievable number of injuries, their intensity just didn’t seem to be there and the 49ers could do whatever they wanted with them.

Tampa Bay at Atlanta - Oct. 6, 2002

Tampa Bay’s defense dominated this game even before Michael Vick went out with a shoulder injury. This was "Welcome to the NFL Day" for Vick. The Buccaneers’ defense is outstanding. Brad Johnson again was sharp at quarterback.

Washington at Tennessee - Oct. 6, 2002

Patrick Ramsey came in after Danny Wuerffel got hurt and made some tremendous plays, tremendous throws. On the other hand, the Redskins’ defense was so much better than it has been. You have to give a whole lot of credit to Steve Spurrier. Everyone said Spurrier is a guy that works short hours. Last week, during the off week, Spurrier was in the office working Joe Gibbs-type hours with both the offense and the defense, helping Marvin Lewis a great deal with the defense and working with his young quarterback. It paid huge dividends. As for Tennessee, the big problem is it cannot get the running game going. You have to stop pointing the finger at the offensive line and start looking at Eddie George, who has not run effectively since he had foot surgery.
