How would they have known the ref had it wrong? Brad Allen nodded at Decker when he reported, and the Lions were in the huddle (presumably making sure everyone knew where to line up/to get the motion right etc) when the announcement was made over the stadium PA.

The * up is Brad Allen's, and basically his alone
They didnt need to have 2 players go over and then a 3rd run on and look like he was going to the ref.

If its all about confusing people, you cant get mad when it confuses the wrong person.
Seems it was announced over the PA.

Green, eligible.
Red, ineligible.
Orange, eligible in structure of formation but ibeligible due to 50-79 number so must report eligible.

The very last one is what the Lions ran. They tried to confuse the D by having extra OL on the field. The TE couldve also been yet another Tackle, even sneakier. But regardless, there'd be two (50-79) ineligible players lined up in eligible positions, so I'm guessing both have to report eligible, or at least one of them has to who intends to run a route. Either of the two could report eligible and the other has to stay back to block. Or both can report eligible and both run routes.

Maybe the confusion the Lions tried to create was sending both up there, so the Dallas D was unsure who of the two or both reported eligible....and the ref got his wires crossed, but either way, the ref had to announce who is reporting eligible, so its all a waste of time trying to confuse the D there.

If the LT was a TE then he wouldnt need to report. As long as the WR on that side didnt cover him up.

If the side judge considered the WR to be covering up the LT even after the LT reported eligible, it still nullifies the LT from being eligible. So maybe the error was the structure of the formation, the WR a bit too close, beyond the hips of the LT, causing the side judge to consider him covering up the LT.

They do say something like if a players helmet is beyond another lineman's hip then he is considered to be on the LOS.

So no one from the lions was listening.
Everyone was still at fault still.

A ref can announce more than one non-eligible player as reporting eligible. Ive seen/heard it before from a ref...."numbers 69 and 75 are reporting eligible".

So if the ref ONLY announced 70 as eligible, even after both players reported eligible, then the ref messed up. He didnt announce it, the LT wasnt covered up by the WR, but he failed to also report him eligible, so the play was legal but the ref messed up...and/or ...the LT didnt make it clear he too was reporting eligible and so both the LT and the ref are at fault.

It’s not if anymore. Audio has come that only 70 was reported as eligible.

Both didnt report. only one tried to. The Lions just sent both over to confuse the cowboys.

58 and 68 went to the ref while 70 was running on

which is funny since 70 never went up to the ref.

everyone is at fault. when you have a play about confusing people and ineligible linemen you cant get too mad when the well proven incompetent refs make a mistake.

Not sure if it was this or the second one ...

If it was the first one, the extra RT and the LT would have to report eligible if both intended to run routes.

If it was the second one, only the LT is needing to report eligible. If the RT reported eligible and then lined up in an ineligible position then he also is to blame.

The ref regardless is to blame too if the LT also reported eligible and he failed to announce it.

It also depends what story the lions are going by.....did they say who reported eligible to ref? Did they say only one or more OL reported eligible? And which ones? Or did they mess it up themselves thinking 68 would be eligible regardless and the RT reporting eligible would suffice?

I think it was the 2nd one but the the TE was after the 2nd RT just off the ball.

It's now clear the ref only ANNOUNCED 70. But its key who the lions actually TRIED to report eligible. Did both report, but the ref erred announcing only one? Did 68 report not 70, but the ref announced the wrong one? Did 70 report only and ref did announce it correctly?

Like you said....its probably that the lions confused themselves AND the ref in trying to be so tricky. Sounds like Campbell saying he prepped them pregame he also is at fault....thinking perhaps 68 would be eligible regardless if 70 was reporting eligible only, but both still needed to be.
