Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Not during the 20 odd games I've seen him play. Definitely not in the top 5 from the 2005 draft.

I'm an Essendon fan myself but I watch a lot of football and attend a fair few hawks games a year with a mate of mine. His definitely one of the better users of the ball in their side. He had something like 83% efficiency by foot last season and a lot of his kicks are setting up play not just chip sideways types. I would feel safe with him coming out of defense.

On Pat Ryder in this draft. I Honestly dont think I would take anyone over him for the bombers future . His last few weeks have been brilliant, just seems to be improving with each week. I think he will eventually be released into the ruck or up Forward where his freak athleticism's will be at full use. I think he would be an excellent CHF, but Gumbleton probably looks likely to be in that future role. Will be great to watch him develop.

Sure you wouldn't be interested in swapping him for Dowler? :p

Nah I'm still optimistic about Dowler. Had 4 shots on goal in 9 minutes for Box Hill yesterday. He hasn't come on in the way that some people had anticipated, but I believe he does have an AFL future. Breaking into Hawthorn's forward line as a marking player is not an easy thing to do at the moment.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

  1. Marc Murphy
  2. Patrick Ryder
  3. Dale Thomas
  4. Scott Pendlebury
  5. Grant Birchall
  6. Shaun Higgins
  7. Xavier Ellis
  8. Shannon Hurn
  9. Nathan Jones
  10. Matthew Stokes - won't stay at ten
  11. Paul Bower
  12. Sam Gilbert
  13. Mitch Clark
  14. Richie Douglas
  15. Travis Varcoe
  16. Darren Pfeiffer
  17. Josh Kennedy - can't even get a game   :(
  18. Sam Lonergan - don't mind him
  19. Rhan Hooper
  20. Andrew Swallow - dropped and still can't kick

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

I think Ryder and Thomas have more room for improvement than Murphy/Pendlebury.

I think Ryder and Thomas are 6/10 developed, Murphy and Pendlebury around 8/10.

That said, I think Thomas and Murphy will end up dead even as the ebst players from this draft.

1- Murphy/Thomas
3- Ryder
4- Pendlebury

Birchall/Eliss/Jones/Higgins/Hurn could be raffled off for the next spots. All will be good players.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Just my opinion...dont slay me.

1. Pendlebury (disregard his start to year...he is class)
2. Thomas (He will end up at 1 for mine...only on potential improvement is he better than M.Murphy at present)
3. Murphy (there really is only a 'smidge' between top 3)

daylight

4. Birchall (needs to play more inside to really bridge the gap)
5. Ryder (classy)
6. Stokes (pocket rocket)
7. Warnock (2 years away)
8. Hurn (huge scope for improvement)
9. Higgins (unlucky with ankle)
10. Jones (too one paced to get much higher)

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

good to see ellis starting to creep higher up the lists of footy fans.

he's still yet to play a dominant game for hawthorn, but he had 23 possessions last weekend, and he's holding down a spot in an undefeated side.

has gained 5 kilos in the past 12 months, and needs another 5 get his power and confidence to optimal levels. once he starts running and carrying he'll become more damaging.

we probably won't have any top 8 draft picks for a while now, so to have blokes like ellis, dowler, muston, and bailey from the 2005 draft yet to hit full stride means we can hopefully gain from a couple of them some of the team improvement required to seriously challenge geelong.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Find Thomas highly overrated at this stage. I'll accept that he has awesome skills and can do special things but hasn't done much yet IMO.

I actually think Stokes best match is better than Thomas' best match so far.

Same for Higgins, Pendelbry, Birchal, Ryder and Murphy.

(All IMO)

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Alright ill give it a go.

Best til now:

1. M.Murphy (1)
2. D.Thomas (2)
3. S.Pendlebury (5)
4. P.Ryder (7)
5. M.Priddis (31 Rookie Selection WOW!)
6. M.Stokes (61)
7. G.Birchall (14)
8. S.Higgins (11)
9. N.Jones (12)
10. S.Hurn (13)
11. S.Gilbert (33)
12. A.Swallow (43)
13. C.Bartram (60)
14. M.Clark (9)
15. B.Vince (32)
16. J.Kennedy (4)
17. C.Hughes (24)
18. A.Carlisle (44)
19. T.Varcoe (15)
20. R.Douglas (16)

I think Clark, Kennedy, Hughes will rise the most from that list and JON, Dowler and Drum will be looking to get back to where they were expected to be. Look for Swallow to drop down there.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

4. Birchall (needs to play more inside to really bridge the gap)
Going to be interesting to see whether he moves to the midfield (as I believe he wants) or takes more important defensive roles (he's the same height as Roughead no reason the club couldn't bulk him up a little and play him on bigger players). Despite his rebounding he seems to beat his opponent every week.

And 96% disposal efficiency on the weekend for the muppet who criticized that before, coming off 95% against Freo, the muppet's team.

Bower #11? :eek::rolleyes:

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Bower has been really good this year, capped last week with a great game playing on Travis Cloke... didn't show much last year, so his improvement has been totally out of the Blue

If you are going on a combination of where they are right now (as in so far this season), plus how much room for improvement they still have, Bower would be close to top 10. But whether he actually continues playing at this level, and continues to improve remains to be seen.

Bernie Vince would have to be higher on the same basis too though?

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

I still think Mitch Clark can potentially be looked at as the best player to come from this draft. He just needs to get his body right. A potent foward who can play second ruck under Charman and Luenberger

The kid is only 20 and has played 10 games, average a goal a game and 3 hitouts

On the Richmond front there is another bloke called Travis Casserly who has been torn apart by soft tissue injuries. He is a very classy and skilled Half back flanker who is a pretty decent size. He is yet to debut but he could potentially rise up into that top 20 echelon within the next 12 months.

As for JON...well better left unsaid. Hopefully we might get a 3rd round pick for him at the end of the year or we might package him up with Pettifer for a trade to the Saints or Freo. Whilst he is a pretty good size, 190cm, 84kg. He simply has poor-to-mediocre skills and zero awarness. On the upside Cleve Hughes is starting to come good though

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

after 8 rounds into season 2008, i've made some modifications to how i would draft the players if they were all up for selection today, bear in mind this does not mean i am putting them in order of who has shown the most so far but who i think will offer the most from this point onwards:

1-murphy (1)
2-pendlebury (5)
3-ryder (7)
4-thomas (2)
5-kennedy (4)
6-birchall (14)
7-jones (12)
8-hurn (13)
9-higgins (11)
10-bower (20)

bower better than stokes.....i dont think so.

i'd say out of that whole draft, stokes has produced just about the most out of anybody. consistently plays well, he's a gun. he'd be at No.1 for me.

i understand where you're coming from and you'll get no argument from me that stokes has done much more at afl level than what bower has. but as i said in my post, i was rating them on how good i think they will be for the rest of their careers. bower has beaten some really good opponents this year and a good centre half back or even 3rd defender is a lot more valuable than a half forward flanker. bower was an all australian chb in the under 18's and this year he has just shown so much promise. i liken him to a young chad cornes and think he'll be one of the premier defenders of the comp in about 5-6 years time.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

1.Murphy
2.Pendles
3.Stokes
4.Thomas
5.Priddis

Thats based on what they've shown thus far. Don't think Stokes has been given enough respect, but in fairness to alot of you, he would struggle to look bad in that team, and perhaps that should be taken into account. I think Murph deserves the no.1 spot. Even Justin Leppich said on Triple M that class wise, Judd Stevens Murphy>Power Black Adcock or Johnstone, which is a big wrap n im not sure its accurate but clearly our opposition see Murph's potential to damage. Keep in mind, Murph's barely recieved a tap to advantage in 3 years due to our depleated rucks. Priddis i think warrents himself a top 5 spot, however i think he may be slightly overratted, in that sure he gets alot of the ball, but often just bombs it forward, and thus isnt the most damaging player around. The other 2 we hear about every 2 mins so what do i need to say.

Sorry if i left anyone out but cant be bothered looking through the whole list.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Bernie Vince starting to look the goods as well.

Much better player than Dale Thomas this year, even Richard Douglas has been better.

Bernie is also pretty even with Scott Pendlebury,
