2011 crowds

The AFL is still miles ahead of the "best ever season" the NRL are supposed to be having

NRL last full round 132,107 ave 16,513 AFL 304,506 ave 38,062 which is more than DOUBLE the RL crowds.

The NRL trolls can bleat about their TV ratings ( lets face it the people sitting at home contribute nothing to the game directly) I would rather still have bums on seats as well for the massive income from ticket sales and food/ drink concessions they generate.

Some of the NRL games like the Storm only getting 9000 to AAMI Park Melbourne would barely pay for the rent. The RL clubs relying on pokies income so much could be in really big trouble if the govt gets the pokies reforms through.

The Cows will come home to milk when the AFL takes lock/stock ownership of Docklands, and then the revenue from catering/pourage (rights) etc will go directly to the AFL. (or would they then lease it out to a venue operator that paid dividends back to the AFL??)

So yeah, this week was a bit poor, but in perspective I went to the Storm v Cronulla game today (because the Dons had a bye) and the crowd there was 9,337 or something..
But the Storm won, so that's sweet.

Three sub 10k crowds in a row for the Murdoch Storm - god help their crowds if they ever struggle on the field. But hey, all their poor crowds are a result of Olympic Park...oh, wait...

Over 50,000 at the G today for Collingwood and West Coast was a great result, I thought. Can't remember Collingwood drawing that many against an interstate team for quite a while...maybe against Sydney in RD 21, 2009? Anyway, good effort.

back in 2007 we drew 63,000 against the Swans but sydney bring 10,000 of there old south fans when they play in Melbourne! in 2008 we drew 53,000 against the eagles and 52,000 against the Crows!

Good turnout today 52,000 atleast 5,000 were Eagle fans and at least 47,000 would of been Collingwood fans!
Also having the biggest Crowd of the Round against an interstate side is a big thumbs up to the Collingwood fans! once again proves why we are the biggest club in the competition!

Last year's mess is still taking its toll, and the introduction of the Rebels has hurt numbers too. I daresay it'll be at least another 3-5 years until Storm can average a 'decent' crowd of 15k at home.

On the AFL figures though, although more interstate footy is great for the game, it's clearly having an impact on attendance. Perhaps the old records will stand for a while yet.

Always going to be a poorish round with Essendon byeing, Richmond in a postage stamp in the middle of nowhere begging for money and Collingwood hosting an interstate team. The figures pretty much what would be expected.

Does anyone else think there were way more than 63k at the pies v saints game?

There is no way that ground was only 63% full.

At the current round average of 280,000, with two extra rounds to be played this year, and despite being 220,000 down at the same time last year, crowds are projected to easily clear the 6 million mark, estimated at 6,731,088. Which will easily account for the 2008 record (6,511,255)

No its probably about right, the public area was 85% full, AFL members was only at about 65% even though it was 80% sold with only supposedly the back rows of Q available but there was no one sitting up the top, what let the crowd down yet again was the MCC was completely empty, be suprised if there was more than a couple of thousan there

16,000 free tickets...

Yawn

Richmond ran a similar promotion for there game against Fremantle (U15's) earlier this season (and drew 34,000)

These promotions are a seriously good scheme to draw more people to these low interest games against low drawing opposition

I posted this on another thread identifying the problems that Victorian clubs have drawing big crowds against Fremantle, Port etc.

Carlton, Richmond, Essendon and Collingwood V Fremantle

Carlton
2010 - 28869
2008 - 28995
2006 - 17519

Richmond
2011 - 34090
2010 - 25707
2008 - 24881

Essendon
2010 - 29651
2009 - 27461
2008 - 32523

Collingwood
2009 - 44114
2008 - 45383
2007 - 44880

As you can see, Collingwood aside all Victorian clubs struggle to consistantly draw 30,000+ to these games, if running a free ticket promotion can turn a game that traditionally draws 28-30,000 to 32-35,000 all the better.

Attending football games is discretionary spending, given the chance most Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond etc. fans would favour attending a game against a strong Victorian game over and above Fremantle.

Given we've got games against Geelong, Essendon (probably the #1 and #2 priority game for 95% of Hawks fans) and Collingwood in the next month a Sunday game against Fremantle is always a tough sell - a good indication of interest is to compare the patronage in the member reserves for these games

Football clubs must look at ways to make these games attractive so to draw the wayward 5-10k members that favour attending the rivalry games over the so-so fixtures

Source?? I know we were doing a 'bring a friend' promotion for members, but I doubt 16,000 members brought friends, otherwise... the crowd would have been 32k +. Given there were 31k there, completely unrealistic!
Ok sorry

15,962 free tickets... ;)

Nothing against the promotion, but it does need to be said when calling it a good crowd

Good stats there Hawkk, another good one for any arguments with Essendon supporters :)

Actually Collingwood v Freo crowds brings up a very interesting stat

In the last 10 years, every single Collingwood v Freo match in either Perth or Melbourne that has drawn more than 40,000 people- Collingwood have won

Every single game that has drawn less than 40,000 people- Freo have won

Attending football games is discretionary spending, given the chance most Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond etc. fans would favour attending a game against a strong Victorian game over and above Fremantle.

Thats why I love going to the games v Freo, West Coast, Bulldogs, Saints, Roos etc because others dont, easier to park, more comfortable and less queues
