Link to last years thread

We don't really have one of these yet. We're still using the thread from last year, and that isn't good enough. Not for a rich club like Fremantle. I mean I know we spent a lot of money on Ross Lyon, but surely we don't need to recycle threads?

So hypothetically, if we were to keep our first round draft pick - who/what type of player would you be looking for? And what about later on in the draft?

What happens with the rookie list? Does Sibosado get upgraded or delisted? What round do we re-draft Hinkley in?

Anyone not named Mitch Clark that you'd be interested in trading for?

Senior list vacancies: 4
Rookie list vacancies: 4 (so far)

Pearce is an interesting one isn’t he. For me he was starting to show signs of the dominance at WALF level you would expect from someone with his skill level and strength. A few times towards the end of this year we saw Swannies getting smashed with even their perpetual ball winners like Roberts struggling to reach 20 touches but with Pearce and Coniglio running round like they were playing a different match.
Positives:
His attack on the footy is great, regular high tackle count and penetrating, accurate, if arkward looking, kick
Negatives:
Bit short, possible fitness issues, slow, and skills and decision making possibly a bit suspect under pressure.

I don’t think we have anything to loose by elevating him to the senior list, but equally I’m not sure letting him go would have us loosing much either.

Well I've conceded that we are 100 to 1 chance of getting jaeger , probably always have been.I can see us using the Palmer compo pick + a player or pick upgrade to get M.Clark.Freo getting Clark is definitely a big upgrade on kep & Jonno IMO, very handy ruck cover as well.

With pick 16 has to be best available which appears to be a selection of Key backs , our second pick I would be stoked with Jordan Lockyer & then kyal Horsely.

I would use minimum picks, banking the compo, or trading it or the 1st rounder for Clark. In a perfect world I would trade 2nd rounder plus Bradley or Griffin for Clark.

I have no problem with keeping Griffin and recruiting Clark, but would prefer to trade him if a 2nd rounder was on the table.

And in the perfect drafting world I would be taking Kersten, McInness and Blackwell. KPF; KPB; midfield grunt.

In the Rookie Draft I would go hard for any hard at it midfield types with decent kicking skills and pace, and I would take Houghton again.

Apologies for butting in, but I follow Freo's list fairly closely.

I've always rated Pearce. Needs to be a little less ambitious with his kicking in AFL, but I rarely see him fumble and his decision-making usually looks pretty good. At the very least, he's handy depth. You know he's going to come in and get a bit of the ball without turning it over too much.

What about trading for Callum Wilson? Wasn't fantastic in the WAFL this year, but he showed a bit towards the end of 2010. Might be a bit similar to Anthony, but Anthony might need to play as a defender anyway? At least Wilson will provide a contest for Ballantyne and Mayne to crumb off. Haydn Busher might be another one to look at for a rookie spot?

I read somewhere that Richmond were interested in Walters. I reckon he'd be worth way more to Fremantle than they would receive in a trade. He's got a heap of upside, would be great in the forward pocket or on a HFF. Actually, he'd be a great fit at West Coast. I wonder how Lyon rates him.

Agree with both of these, especially Wilson. Big unit and would be a shyte load cheaper than this Clark trade that everyone is spouting.

Big unit who can take a contested grap and is a booming kick.

If I was him, I would be looking for greener pastures when you consider what is ahead of him in the Eagles forward line list.

Busher would be a handy addition. Quality kid who gives it everything. Nice and hard too.

Hopefully he wasn't talking him up for trade week.

I love the kid. Just needs to get his head right.

Gilligan as a small forward (thats what richmond drafted him as)
2 of the three of houghton, callum wilson and busher
Graham Jetta as a back pocket
and horsely and/or blackwell for midfield grunt

From a draft perspective would like one of Kersten/Dobosz as a key forward.
Also cover needs in the midfield maybe a Mitch Grigg from SA if available at our 2nd and 3rd round and some inside grunt as well if we can find a tough inside mid.

Don't feel a KPP back is a priority but may be worth Lockyer or McInness if they slide to our 2nd and the others aren't available. Have faith in McPharlin and Silvagni though and persisting with Anthony down back if need be.

I think we play it tough with Mitch Clark and offer an out of favour player but ultimately risk him going to the psd as he has stated he is coming home to WA either way. Not worth giving our first Rd pick or comp pick IMO.

Need to have a crack at Jaeger maybe a few players and the comp pick?
Can always take another of the strong minidraft players if we get pick 2 such as Garlett/Mason Shaw.

Would keep Pearce and Walters and give them one more year to show their worth and then can trade/delist next year and give us more picks in the stronger draft then.

Would like to rookie some of Blackwell/Horsely/Hutchings/etc as we gave seen the success of taking dominant state league players with Barlow, Mzungu, Broughton etc.

Need a speedy lock down small defender as well to cope with the likes if Milne/betts/Rioli etc which we don't have at present. Not sure who though?

Draft?

I'd target Brad McKenzie, Daniel Markworth, Hayden Crozier or Sam Docherty with our first pick. Any one of those guys would be great, and at least 1 should be available for us.

I dearly hope Lockyer or Kerstin are available at our second pick, otherwise Mihocek or Kelly should be.

Cam Eardley hopefully with the next.

Newman, Houghton, Blee, Blackwell for the rookie draft with a couple of roughies in Murphy and Thrum to be considered very late if the others are gone.

I suppose the first question for the draft is, what are our needs?

It's already been mentioned that we'll be looking for some speed, as well as some more key position depth. And I also get the feeling that the majority of posters would prefer we didn't take another flanker type with our first pick?

Here is a hypothetical look at a stock standard team:

B: Negator, Defender of the Air, Loose man
HB: Rebounder, Athletic Tank, Hard Nut
C: Run & Carry, Hardworker, Penetrating Kick
HF: Linking Player, Power Forward, Forward Line Pressure
F: Mr Magic, Leading Marker, Pack Crasher
R: Man Mountain, Tagger, In & Under

I have assigned our current list with 2 players for my generic 18 "roles" without listing them twice and put question marks in the gaps I think we might need to recruit for.

Negator - Grover, ???
Defender of the Air - Silvagni, Anthony
Loose man - Johnson, Roberton
Rebounder - Broughton, Duffield
Athletic Def - McPharlin, Faulks
Hard Nut - Suban, Crichton
Run & Carry - Hill, Ibbotson
Hardworker - Lower, Clarke
Penetrating Kick - Pearce, Mzungu
Man Mountain - Sandilands, Griffin
Tagger - De Boer, Crowley
In & Under - Barlow, Mundy
Linking Player - Fyfe, Pitt
Power Forward - Pavlich, Morabito
Forward Line Pressure - Mellington, Van Berlo
Mr Magic - Ballantyne, Walters
Leading Marker - Mayne, Sibosado
Pack Crasher - McPhee, ???

Cult Hero - Bradley *Couldn't find a category to suit Kepler so I made his own :thumbsu:

NFI -
Michie (Run & Carry? could replace Ibbo)
Bollenhagen (Forward Line Pressure?)
Roberts (In & Under?)

Although this is very generic and we should not pigeon hole players to a specific role it shows what kind of a player we may need in this years draft and next. Also gives a bit of perspectives of a succession plan if guys like Groves, McPharlap, Pav & Sandi all dissapear within 2-3 years.

Thoughts?

Tough inside mid with a raking boot and a taste for hard work.

Talk that Neville Jetta wants to come home. I really rate him at his best as a good level headed defender but he seems to be horribly inconsistent but then I don't think the dees used him too well. Would be keen if he came cheap as a replacement for Roger.

Chris if you had the option would you rather have pick 16 or the compo pick next year?

Even if we get Clark and keep pick 16, we still should go for kpp, kersten or mcinnes. Then look at a back pocket or inside mid. After our second pick it sounds like it will be tuff going. I would look also at the WAFL, sanfl and vfl for re-cycling back ups for these positions.

If we really want JOM then we will need to give up Clarke and someone like ibbotson plus more?? We should then look for a ball carrying HBF.

I hope we could look at re-drafting houghton (rookie) and may be lee from Claremont.

These thoughts pretty much summarise my hopes for this drafting season.

In terms of the KPF's i'd hope we draft one of either Busher, Kersten or Callum Wilson.
Grigg sounds good, but if he's any comparison to Suban I'd only be interested if he could find the ball ALOT more than Subes does.

Some maturity in our late/rookie picks with potentially Blackwell/Horsley/Hutchings/Gilligan.

If Talia is available at our 2nd (wishful thinking I know) then i'd definitely be stoked to have him.

I also wouldn't mind still going for a minidraft pick to get one of Garlett/Shaw.

At this point i'd pull the trigger and delist or trade Pearce. Hard times call for desperate measures and a shake up. Give Walters another season to hopefully recognise his potential.

Other trades I'd be intersted in would be Clarke obviously, and Davis for a cheap cost.

Bradley Hill anychance as a rookie selection?

If we get Mitch Clark and can bank a young KP, I really hope we add some mids.

Wilson - if we get Clark and Pav is forward ....I'd rather stock up on a few colts (preferably ones that wear red and blue)

Even if we get Clark and keep pick 16, we still should go for kpp, kersten or mcinnes.

I don't think there is a huge difference between the two. With priority picks and all the other teams using compensation picks next year, that pick would still be in the 20s. And there is no guarantee we would use it next year either - maybe we'll bank it to avoid the rush of the other compensation picks being used.

Also, I would be tempted to go best available (whatever that is) this year and try my luck with talls later on. Wouldn't surprise me if a Lockyer or McInnes (or another highly rated tall from interstate) was to make their way to our second round pick. There are also some later round KPPs with potential, including some mature guys.

Bradley Hill anychance as a rookie selection?

Very unlikely. Regardless of how he performs at the draft combine, someone will draft him based purely on his name - before the rookie draft that is.
