Seems like a nice down to earth kid. Also sounds like he's from New Zealand strangely......bro

afl website take on him Downside: Brisbane lions need skill not another Hawskley

Paparone isn't the greatest kick, which is a flaw he will need to address in order for him to get the proper rewards for his hard work. Contested marking isn't a strength either, so he'll need to get better in that area to become a more potent attacking weapon at AFL level. If he's to come up onto a wing on a regular basis he'll also need to work on being a bit cleaner below his knees.
Quigs please take over our recruiting apart from mayes disappointed thereafter .i do not know close
Why not add what they say is his upside?
"I think Marco is a sleeping giant - he's capable of a lot more than we've seen so far. I think it's a bit about self-belief with Marco. Endurance-wise he's elite, but he's also quite agile for a guy of 194cm - he could potentially play on a wing at the next level. At the championships he was often able to out-run his opponents, so he really can be damaging toward the end of quarters. I think he can develop into a really dangerous player." - WA talent manager Raff Guadagnino.

LOL at the tryhards reading sooooo much into one still photo of Mayes.

"OMG, he's not grinning from ear to ear and doing cartwheels at the prospect of being a Lion"

Must be shattered and be ready to ask for a trade back home in the next 10 minutes

Courier-Mail -itis at it's worst:thumbsdown:

I wonder if the draftees are aware that people are predicting their careers based on the extent to which they smile.

1116 surprised with brisbane lions picks after mayes (some very good experts there)

Leon Harris ex-Fitzroy man (the only genuine expert on SEN coverage) & current High Performance Vic Country Manager was excited when Michael Close 'good pick' was read out as a Lion, not sure what you were listening too.

1116 surprised with brisbane lions picks after mayes (some very good experts there)- Tim obrien quigs picked in mocked draft which i liked and many non brisbane lions big footy members did as well , i would like to rookie draft dayle gartlett. non selection i hope dents his pride and he starts to show some character .massive test of strength of character for him

Maybe you can ask Dad what Mick thinks about the whole thing. I'd really like to get his insight and, if possible, more of yours?

Also, is Patrick Karnezis playing for Carlton yet?

liked this from the courier quoting Sam

I'm very happy with the result and I'm glad the opportunity has come up with the Brisbane Lions and I'll give it my all." Mayes said the go-home factor would not be an issue. "Mum and Dad, they'll be thrilled no matter what. They'll come up and visit and stuff like that," he said.

I think the BigFooty Lions board is in a rebuild mode. Really starting to bottom out.

Bunch of spuds. The lot of you!
We'll be in trouble when you retire, TBD. Still frantically searching for your replacement, but our recruiters keep turning up spuds!

May need to start looking at free agents from other boards. I hear whispers that Wonaeamirri33 is considering a move.

Retire? Been a list clogger for years. Delist.

Been carrying you lot on my shoulders for years. Have been double and triple-teamed by opposition trolls with little or no support.

Got to meet Leon a few years back when he was coaching the Vic Country under 16's.

Very astute judge, and if he is happy, I am happy:)

And he also said he was pretty nervous going into the draft and that he and Mom shed a tear. Fancy that, an 18 year old facing one of the defining moments in his life and he is nervous. Possible reason for him not smiling do you think?

We really have had an SA flavour of late! Mayes, Obrien, Polec, Redden!

Is my wish of the Lions moving to Adelaide finally going to come true??

2005 start date. Good enough performer when we were at the bottom of the ladder although I think we will need more class when we are challenging for the cup again.

Reasons why Mayes looked sad in his first photo:

1. Hates the paddlepop lion.

2. Was supposed to be drinking Vodka Cruisers at schoolies.

3. Harvey had just whispered to him "3km time trial on Monday, son."

Don't really have an opinion on Paparone or Close as players, and I would like to think our recruiters are making better informed opinions that the media "experts" and BF phantom drafters, but I just fell that if we had picks in the 40's or 50's rather than 23 and 32 we could have ended with the same players. Maybe a better strategy would have been to trade picks 23 or 32 and still use later picks for Paparone or Close. Sorry if my previous post come off as bagging the recruiters, that wasn't my intention.

It was nice to come home to discover who will be the new Lions players for next year. I am excited to see how they all go, particually Mayes, whom I really liked the prospects of in the lead up to the draft. I will admit that I was surprised by 23 and 32, but I certainly wasn't unhappy. I think its a bit early to be predicting player's downfalls at this point. I'm sure the recruiters have plans on how they will fit into the side.

It probably was nice for the recruiters having some idea on who they'll be able to get next year through the academy, and would be able to plan ahead taking it into account for this draft. It's an advantage they would have over the recruiting staff most other clubs in this year's draft.
