Ideally Ethan Hughes continue to develop into that Ibbotson type player, but we don't really have that Johnson replacement. I do think it's a decent year for defenders though, so we should have the chance to take one or two. Even the likes of Callum Moore and Dylan Smith potentially project better as defenders, even though they have played predominantly as forwards. Moore could be a guy to have develop under Johnson for a couple of years, he's quite raw and very quick for his size.

Endurance wise, it was the 'big names' who performed well - Weitering, Curnow, Hibberd. There weren't really any of the mid/late round picks who really stood out. Jesse Glass-McCasker did well in the agility and leap testing, so he'd be one to watch.

As we develop younger player in mid or wing to replace d.Pearce , hill and mundy take turn to play Johnson role as lose man .

Little bit off subject but one thing I've always wondered about why has freo or wce not got an academy? The east coast does and they're hardly any different? Even if it could only feature kids from the country... Would be well worth it

Yeah that's one part, but academy's in wa could give kids from the country/bush could get a shot at playing pro footy more than they usually would that'd normally be overlooked maybe? I dunno just a thought

I would be happy for academies (or player preferences) set up by clubs for bush players across the nation. Just don't give the clubs a 20% discount like the northern clubs get.
The advantage would be that a player has the ability to nominate which club he would prefer to go to, and they alone have the opportunity to match the pick (with a points combination just like the northern clubs have been collecting this trade week). But there is no discount, so if a player was going to entertain reaching above their draft position, it could get very expensive. But if a club has a single target to fill a gap, they would have the opportunity to do so.
This would also limit some of the positional trading we have seen, as more teams than just GWS, GC, Sydney and Brisbane would desire more points.
Limit the number of nominations a club can have from players to three, to avoid one club having too much of an advantage.

Yeah that's sound like the best idea, just seems a bit shit they can develop their own little batch cause it's hard to keep good players. Really wa is no different with the Melbourne clubs raiding talent, we just don't get the option to try and keep them

I posted my updated draft earlier this morning, so here are Fremantle's picks. I clearly went tall, as I do every year only for the club to go in a different direction. The only problem was that the talls are potentially all better suited to the back half, but that's where the value was at the time. So what should we do? Clearly the answer is playing the 181cm Blake Hardwick at full forward. He's a little like Medhurst, in that he's a good mark for his size. Had hauls of 8, 10 and 12 goals in 3 different games this season, on his way to 56 goals in 16 games. Who needs tall forwards anyway?

27. Fremantle - Sam Skinner (197cm, 96kg forward/defender from Gippsland Power)

Skinner missed a chunk of the season through injury, and missed the all important second half of the season. But he ticks a lot of boxes as a tall prospect. He has the size to compete with the biggest opposition forwards, and can move and rebound nicely. Still the third best tall defender despite his injury for me. But, for Fremantle I'd be drafting him as a tall forward. I like his strength and aggression in the forward half.

38. Fremantle - Blake Hardwick (181cm, 78kg forward from Eastern Ranges)

There are a handful of small forwards who will be around the mark in the third round, Hardwick being one who could even push up into the second - being the leading goal scorer in the TAC Cup with hauls of 10 and 12 goals. Unlike the other smalls though, Hardwick is more of a marking small forward. Like a Tory Dickson. So there would be room for him, even though Fremantle already have a couple of good small forwards. He can also pinch hit in the middle.

58. Fremantle - Marcus Adams (193cm, 98kg defender/forward from West Perth)

22 year old from the WAFL, who essentially didn't play any football in 2012 or 2013. He impressed last year in the forward half, before moving more into defence this season - where he has gone from strength to strength, playing on both talls and smalls. He's smart, strong and reasonably quick for his size. The only issue I have is that he's probably best suited to playing as third/medium tall, but he could fill holes wherever he is needed.

69. Fremantle - Jack Firns (194cm, 90kg defender from Oakleigh Chargers)

A solid tall defensive prospect is Firns, he's just gone about his business without much fuss this year. Did a decent job on Schache earlier in the year. More of a stopper, he'll need to develop a bit of a more well rounded game to become more than a backup. But with his commitment and attack on the ball, there's no reason to think he couldn't. He won't give up without a fight, that's for sure.

There's a good chance that Adams doesn't last until 58, more likely to be gone than still on the board in fact. Clubs will have started passing by our third pick too, in what could be considered a knock on the quality of the draft. So it wouldn't surprise if guys like Adams or Mitch Brown were taken a bit earlier than they might have otherwise been.

I had Collins go inside the first round, so not on the board for us.

I rate Skinner higher than Smith - slightly better as a forward prospect, similar as defenders. Being from WA wouldn't be enough for me to go for Smith over Skinner. As for the others, I do rate Hardwick higher than Glass-McCasker even if they aren't at all comparable. I just like what he offers as a different type of forward, and I assume we wont be going all in on talls with all of our picks. So thought I'd change it up a bit.
