Gold Coast are after inside midfielders. I would be amazed if they overlooked Brodie at pick 4. Think it would be crazy if they did overlook him because they desperately need someone who can play inside day 1 to replace Prestia and omeara.

Therefor would be surprised if he's available to us.

(Brisbane would be stupid to bid on Bowes because they won't get him anyway and would just antagonise Gold Coast.)

Yeah, that's a fair assessment, they should definitely be after someone like Brodie and I agree with you in that Bowes won't be bid on before GC's pick. I actually think we may lean towards Scrimshaw ahead of Ainsworth

I agree. I think Scrimshaw could be a perfect partner for Cripps. After watching him on sunday i was convinced. He just has a beautiful kick and he has some aggression about him.

I know, it's unfortunate, but still.
The AFL need to change the system a bit, the academy clubs are getting a far better discount on these players because there is no incentive for clubs to antagonise them by bidding on players they know they won't get. Maybe they could get the clubs to hand the AFL where they rank the academy players prior to the draft to force a bit more accountability. Richmond kept them honest last year but most clubs let academy players slide.

Definitely, Hopper slid far too low last year.

Would sooner watch this than the GF.
May go...
Look at those midfields;

O'Loughlin
Brodie, Clarke, Drew, Petrevski-Seton, Scharenberg, Setterfield with English rucking.
Judd
Bowes, McLuggage, Perryman, Powell-Pepper, Taranto, McGrath, Ainsworth

This is definitely a midfielders draft.

Like the sound of that Judd guy.

Wouldn't be hard for them to be independently ranked for points value. The clubs are simply not going to invest resources into scouting or interviewing players they know they are never going to get and a club with a top pick is never going to bid on a player they have not scouted or interviewed. But for the academy kids it works out exactly how the AFL wants it to work for Sydney & GWS so they are not going to change it. But wait until we get a good run of father sons and it will be quickly changed.

A few people rated Hopper at number 1 last year (yes even ahead of Weitering), yet he didn't get bid on until something like pick 7. He is so much a better prospect than someone like Parish it isn't funny (and I thought Parish showed good promise this year), but clubs at the top end don't seem to want to give the impression they aren't "getting their man", that or like a few have suggested, they don't want to antagonise. You're right, as long as the academy clubs are getting a leg up from it the AFL won't be bothered.

I don't buy it; I can certainly see them not putting as much effort into actually following players that they know they can't actually get, that's the flaw in the AFL's system, but the other theories just sound counter intuitive.

Reduce GWS' area of access and cut the discount to something like 10%. The fact that the clubs are getting exclusive access should be enough.

I'll go a long way out and predict that McCluggage & McGrath won't be available to us at #5, so with what's left to us, I reckon:

1. Brodie
2. Taranto
3. Scrimshaw
4. Ainsworth
5. Petrevski-Seton

So it will be between Taranto & Brodie..................................and I'll look back and realise how silly this idea was later.

Taranto is the one player in the top group that I'm stuggling to get excited about.
186cm forward mid. Isn't a contested ball beast, isn't by any means quick and ball use is just ok.
I know he is a very good overhead mark, but he reminds me a lot of Ben Lennon. HFF type.

I am wanting to keep 5 and 23 this year and pick Brodie or Scrimshaw and Drew or Clarke or Berry.

Not sure a tall defender is a key need ATM and think we could get Garthwaite with a late pick. Looks a natural defender with a bit of Dustin Fletcher about him despite his awkward kicking action. An academy boy that GWS probably won't pick with Sproule and McCreddie ahead of him. He looked good in the U18 GF. Will be interested to see how he goes on Friday.

More like top 40 picks, bring it on

Not quite like Lennon but I agree that he is somewhat vanilla for a mid.
