Maybe it's not to late to claim Christmas Island or Australian Antarctic Territory. ;)

Some of those penguin kids can fly...oh wait!

These kids are going to be growing up seeing football players overseas making a base if 10k/week for league 1 level teams in the EPL. If they end up having world class talent, what an AFL player makes in 12 months, they would basically make in a week.

What incentive is there for talented kids to play aussie rules?
They don't have to move halfway around the world to enjoy a wealthy lifestyle.

Live in Melbourne or Perth... Or maybe live in Paris or London or Madrid...

Big choices there mate... Especially when you have racist white hogans abusing you because you might be foreign looking.

I'm comfused has Jesse Hogan made the move from Melbourne to Perth already??

Leave the family & friends behind, or stay in Australia & still get paid a lot more than the average Joe/Giovanni & enjoy the benefits of having family & friends within reach.

Get drafted by GWS and have a breakdown because they won't trade you back to WA. :(

For many kids getting drafted means packing up and leaving anyhow.

Most of the kids going overseas are boarded with either staff or families willing to board the kids for a couple of years. Some of them can adapt and make a go of it. Others can't, like my friends son, and come home.

In the cases of really talented kids who join an academy side, clubs have been known to organise for the whole family to relocate and get the father a job and arrange schools for any kids.

Comparing to 2015, we have lost half a season of Chris Judd, ordinary non committed seasons from Yarran, Henderson and Menzel, an okay season by Carrazzo, and a great season by Bell.

We may get back half a season from Gibbs, Kreuzer and a full season from Thomas. Plus almost a full season from Graham. Then we look at the players coming in and what they might achieve. Then we look at a cohesive, disciplined team under the tutelage of an impressive new coach.

Will we, and should we be worse in 2016?

Is it possible that we wont be worse but the
Yep seems fair :straining:

Is this a joke? I have been out of the loop a little bit in relation to this topic. Can anyone actually tell me how these zones were allocated? How can some clubs have three regions where the Blues get one? The Tigers have half the state of Victoria and we have the northern suburbs. Why didn't we also get a zone in the NT?

Surely the AFL in its quest for equalisation would not have allowed a lop sided allocation of zones

Would love for it to happen but I wouldn't have thought so. A few years back maybe...but not now.

Personally I think he'll be one of the bigger individual beneficiaries of the sub rule being scrapped. The Swans have had him on the periphery of their best side for a while now, but they can no longer sit on the fence. He's either in or he's out.......and he's well and truly in.

if he is out of contract and he is not happy then he can leave if he wants, but why would he choose a side at the bottom when he could walk in to a side at the top?

The what? The rulers of the universe? The first team to win a flag from last to first since Fitzroy in 1916? Don't leave me hangin' man!

Perhaps the most interesting aspect about this season is how low expectations are.

The gaps between success and failure at the AFL level are actually much smaller to my eye than commonly perceived. A team needs a cohesive gameplan, players capable of producing that, a good run with injuries (particularly to key personnel), a strong culture and some x-factor.

X-factor is typically what is considered by most viewers as what makes success and it is behind the bellicose predictions about Geelong this year. They picked up a super-talent and some good complimentary players, surely they are bound to do well!

But what if Geelong's gameplan gets blown away this season? They get figured out and negated? What if a host of their small defenders go down, and all of a sudden fast movement through the backline kills them every week? What if Dangerfield and Selwood have a personal spat and the entire team divides around it?

Or to phrase it in terms of Carlton 2015: What if Malthouse's gameplan gets found out as outdated? What if key midfield players in Thomas and Gibbs are out almost all season and we can't replace that quality? What if a large contingent of players all call it quits mid-season and don't contribute?

So we come into this season with a new gameplan, some new players, no significant pre-season injuries a much stronger culture and a teensy bit of x-factor from the recruits... Maybe we can actually make something of this year.

couldnt agree more. There are a lot of moving pieces to a successful season. Look at Port last year- held up by all and sundry as the poster child for the model we needed to follow going forward- didnt make the finals- Why? Answer- they had a bad run with all those little things that dont get recognised and discussed enough- injuries, injuries disrupting structure and game plan, other teams working out game plans and combatting it etc etc.
But try to apply that to our 2015 season and the majority want blood not reasons- enter stage left the big bad wolf MICK!

As long as the a league wages are south of aussie rules, aussie rules will be the sport of choice. Simple fact it's easier to make it on a list.
We see it from cricket and basketball players all the time. With Alex keath being the only major exception and guess where he is now.

People putting their kids into football are doing it due to the fact that they have a bigger chance to make it as a professional sportsman as the game is played all around the world. lots of big contracts are being given to join leagues in China these days.

I mean what if 2016 isn't as successful as some people are predicting
yeah I get that but Geelong have been treading water for several years desperately trying to keep a dynasty afloat - poaching a handful of stars isn't going to transform the 10th placed team into premiership contenders.

Everything would have to go right for them to be a top 4 chance.

Nothing to do with the child's preference, LO?

Most parents want what's best for their kids and will direct/influence them accordingly. Footy is pretty rough and scares a lot of parents away. Not all kids can be swayed though, thankfully!
