Not sure if it is the approach every year - but GW's video on the HFC website the other day said that the plan is to draft on best available not filling team needs. He said they know which players they want and it will be a matter of who would be available at the time when we go to pick.

I dare say this is the approach most years. I doubt there would be any panic in our selections.

Best available has always been Wrighty's MO....

Why does every long left foot kick get linked with Hawthorn? We don't actually draft that many of them, we just had a few at the club for a long time.

Happens every bloody year! haha

Seen a bit of Farrell this year, he is a long and clean left foot kick but his DM can be sh*thouse, to sum him up he is a guy who is technically a good kick but doesn’t kick the ball well. He often plays the game on his terms and doesn’t do the hard stuff going the other way, pretty much exclusively an outside player but he did improve the balance between contested and uncontested as the season wore on. I would be a bit disappointed if we went with him

GW will have a list of guys likely ordered in terms of preference, when our pick comes, we will take the first available guy on the list, there won’t be any deviation from that list

Is the club likely to use only three live picks? If that’s the case there’s two more senior list spots to fill then (not including the Vickery retirement of course). Perhaps there’s a player the club might get after the draft in the second delisted free agency period? Although I don’t understand why you would only use three picks when we are already short one player with Vickery gone and the lack of key position players you might as well fill out the list.
If GW is to be believed club will use 3 live picks, go in with 38 on the senior list and probably look to maximize the rookie spots on the list. Considering Cat A can play without being upgraded and the first $80kish is outside TPP a few mature age or journeymen cast offs will get rookied this year across the league I reckon

Can't see how a club would panic.

They would have 100 players on their lists, ranked all different ways and just start crossing them off as each club takes their turn.

The only issue would be when a player you rated highly, in a position you do not necessary need to fill, becomes available and you have to trade off most talented versus fulfilling a need...
As Kippy mentioned GW tends to go for best available in the draft and trade for players to fill the holes

I'd hope we go in with 39 seeing as though TV has pulled the pin. 37 next year sounds a little dicey but maybe they might go a more mature KPP like Close as a rookie instead of another youngster.

Wouldn't mind another Ollie or Cousins this year though!

If we have 38 on the primary list including Ty and have 6 cat 8 rookies that gives us 43 players to choose from for senior footy without needing to upgrade anyone, add to that if we fill up the cat B spot that gives us 46 we can choose from if we want to upgrade the cat b rookies, and we would have the spots on the senior list to do so

last year we spent most of the year with 39 senior and 5 rookies so our total list size was 46 same as it will be next year if we fill up all rookie spots

What I want to see at about 8:30 p.m. tonight on this board:

"Welcome to Hawthorn Pick 43 - Cameron Rayner"

"Welcome to Hawthorn Pick 68 - Jayden Stephenson"

"Welcome to Hawthorn Pick 75 - Adam Cerra"

Is that too much to ask?
Post needs more Nathan Kreuger & Matt Guelfi

From a general numbers perspective I'm not worried at all.

With TV off it just gives another young player exposure and our medical history suggests we probably won't have a crisis next year injury wise.

It was more from the angle that TV going leaves us with 37 available players and potentially a little skinny in KPF stocks compared to most years.

Id love us to take another at the draft to fill his spot (despite that fact we can't technically) if only because I'd love another new face to get excited over.

If Close replaces Vickery as that ready made KPF/2nd Ruck we still need another Fitzmagic.

But it doesn't leave us with 37 available players because we have our rookies
if we run with 38 on the primary list and don't add to our rookies we will have 43 players, 42 available, I don't see us not adding to our rookies

Ty being out for the year isn't any different really than if he'd injured himself at training like Docherty at the blues. Are the blues going to draft an extra player in the national draft to cover that injury? more likely to use the rookie draft or DFA I would have thought.

At this point only cat B rookies need to be upgraded to play so you effectively have a list of 44 eligible players if you fill all spots minus whoever is injured etc

Fair chance we are taking a kid who was injured all year and played 1 game at the end of the year.

Might not be until the rookie draft but could be tonight.

Watch this space.
Speculation?

Stephenson?

We're very happy that Player X slipped to Position Y
Player Z is raw but we think he's got talent
Player J is very exciting and we think he'll have a long future with the HFC
J won't make it. He's a hack.

With all the hype going on around here on Joel Garner, Nathan kreuger, and Noah Balta, as the top three many here are most excited about.

Question is what if there's a possibility that all three slide down to our first pick, which one, and why? out of the three would the majority here like to see the club pick first?

Just curious as i find it very hard to split them, from what i have read and seen so far.

All three have got unique attributes of need to offer our club if all goes well for them and they can make it and really become something special at afl level.

Personally as much as i like what i have read and seen by the other two, my favorite for our first pick by the club would still be Joel Garner, purely on his comparisons to a young hodge as a player, and his leadership skills as a potential future captain.
I'd take Garner, over the other 2.

I agree , the selectors don't panic its the terrified fans that panic. Our history sort of points that out!
