Bit of a concern for Myers. Wouldve liked to have seen him in there. Also id say Zaharakis would be disappointed.

Concerning? Half the list has never played with him.

Heppell, Watson, Hooker and Hurley are walk ups on cache alone and Merrett and Goddard led last year, if we're picking 7, that was always going to be the 7.

IMO he in my eyes isn't far off Dyson as a leader. I would've had him well ahead of Hurley.

I also find it weird that Watson is still in the leadership group think hes either captain or not at all. Maybe a good head to have next to Dyson in meetings but is a player like Hodge still in the hawks leadership group? Or is saint Nick? Id also have Myers ahead of Goddard as well, maybe its a thankyou card for the last few years especially last.

Anyway sounds like Hooker was actually ridiculous close to being captain.

Few interesting things taken from the practice match.

Gleeson was the dominant half back on the day and seemed to be in the middle of the zone (positioned to be the one to get to the most contests). It will be interesting to see if anything changes when he is playing alongside Hurley, Hartley and potentially Brown. It seemed that McKenna was in a similar position at the other end (though it was hard to tell him and Bird apart at a distance because the quality of the stream was not great). McKenna worked his way into the game but was not as good as Gleeson or Long who I though were probably the stand outs at half back.

After a quite first two quarters, Langford went to another level in the third quarter. He has been queried as someone who holds onto the ball too long but it seems to me that he is not taking too long to make a decision but, rather, that he is waiting for the best option to present itself. As a lanky kid who is 6'3 it didn't really work at AFL level but now that he's more man than boy he can absorb body contact and/or break a tackle. It's makes him a dangerous clearance player and is the sort of quality that could make him elite (it's a characteristic of players like Hird and Watson). He just needs to make sure that he is playing with intensity and he'll be fine.

Stewart showed a few glimpses of the sort of player he could be (taking marks on the lead, being a target for a long bomb, putting on some ground level pressure) which could be so important for the team. He looked quite good in the ruck and was positioning himself well enough to suggest that he could genuinely be capable of rucking 25% of game time. He's hardly a technician at this stage but he's not terrible and, for example, looks better than what Daniher has shown when in the middle.

It was interesting to hear Bellchambers talking about his spot in the side as if it was a given that he was a best 22 selection. That would come as a real surprise as I don't see how we can continually have players like Hooker, Bellchambers, Leuenberger, Watson, Goddard and Heppell playing forward. Where would the small and mid-sized forwards fit into things? I can't believe that Worsfold will select slow forward lines until I see it.

It's a bit hard to tell whether what I saw from Laverde and Long was a sort of confirmation bias, because they were two I was always going to be looking out for, but they seemed to be involved a lot which was pleasing. If it was a four quarter match I'd expect that both had the ball about 20 times each. Would like to see us get the ball to Long in space because he will definitely take the game on. Agree with the comments that have been made about Laverde's intensity. He did end up ball watching a bit.

Both Clarke and Mutch were clean with the ball and neither looked out of place.

It looks like the last of that ridiculous unselfishness that plagued Fantasia last year is dead and buried. He only has eyes for goal which is as it should be. The combination with Tippa and Colyer/Green will wreak havoc.

I think it is fair to make the observation, at least based on the one game we have to go by, that based on their roles and positions in the team structure Stanton, Hocking, Howlett, Bird and even Kelly are very much in the glut of players 16 to 26 battling for a best 22 spot. It bodes well that it was Gleeson, Long and McKenna who were probably the three best performed half backs on the day.

Have to make the observation that it just feels so "Essendon" that we finally have a deep list of key positions players only to have most of them unavailable. Daniher played a quarter and a half as did Francis. When you add no Hurley, Hooker, Hartley, Brown or Draper either, it does make it a bit hard to know what the coaches are really planning.

Who was that VFL listed tall defender match up on Muller? He looked good.

I think it'd be a very different conversation regarding Myers if he could consistently get on the park. He was finally getting some continuity in 2013/2014 but the did his shoulder within minutes of the 2015 season starting.

I don't think his leadership is being questioned, but it's hard to be a leader when you've spent as much time in recovery as he has. 85 games in 8 seasons (ignoring 2016) has hurt his chances.

Was it Ferry?

There was another unknown guy playing small defender who looked good - very fit, athletic, strong. Had a decent tan and dark hair. Would like to know who that was.

I just watched the third quarter to watch Langford. He was seriously impressive. I loved the 21 minute mark turn of pace to provide a shepherd through the way of a bump to Jobe Watson. I didn't actually realise Langford was that quick.

*If you're wondering why a Collingwood supporter is so interested in him it's because he's in my keeper league team ;)

Langford definitely has a lot of tricks, that's for sure.

Like Ryder, for example, he is deceptively quick because he has a bounding gait and doesn't look like he is moving that quickly.

He's an astute pick for fantasy footy, the club seems to be expecting big things and he can't have cost much.

Not necessarily a given... when a captain steps down, they usually remain a leader, but not by title. Looks very odd having Watson on the 3rd line. But if that's what he wanted, then that's how it should be.
