To be fair, if actually watching opposition players was a pre-requisite before posting, this thread would be about 4 pages long. The stats don't lie, Ben Reid kicked 3 goals last time the Eagles played the Swans. Case closed.

Ben Reid has never kicked a goal in a Sydney v WC game.

lmao I think that you need to go back and check again. If it wasn't for injuries Sydney's forward line would be the most potent in the league - between Buddy Franklin, Ben Reid and Josh Kennedy we've won 6 out of the last 11 Coleman medals.

Just putting it out there in advance, there is going to be a lot of rage here when Dusty Martin makes the squad/team if he continues the same form over his last 5 games.

Averaged 30 disposals and kicked 8 goals in those 5 games, he keeps doing that after the bye and rightly or wrongly they will put him in the team based on recency bias.
This scenario is becoming more likely each week. 36 touches and 7 coaches votes on the weekend.

Which forward does he replace? Or were you thinking a bench spot?

I think Zorko is closing in on a spot, getting better each week. Great leadership too. Charlie Cameron a lock as one of the forward pockets.

Wait...what? Ben Reid plays for Collingwood...Sam Reid has never won a Coleman and Josh Kennedy is either a mid, or plays for West Coast. None of these posts that keep mentioning 'Ben Reid' make any sense.

Am I missing something or is this just taking the piss?

If Jarman Impey continues his form, would surely in consideration at least for the squad. Been massive for us this year.

Mostly used as a defender but has been swung forward for a half here or a quarter there.

averaging 17 disposals at 81%, 11 kicks, 6 contested possessions, 6.4 intercepts, 0.5 goals 3.3 Score involvements, 5.2 marks(0.7 contested) 2 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s 288 Metres gained.

Yes of course if we plays a lot forward it's hard to justify a defenders position in the AA, but he's genuinely a defender for 90% of the time.
He's been good but he's a long, long way from consideration lol

I don't gamble, but that kind of negative thinking is why Richmond have not won a flag for decades. Try to be more positive!

Back on topic, I really can't see Martin getting AA this year. There have been far better ruckmen in the comp, and Brisbane would need to have a hell of a finals series for him to be selected.

Obviously you missed 2017 :)

Clearly a troll guys. Even the most deluded supporter in the competition wouldn’t think Sydney has the best forward line. You don’t recruit someone like Menzel when you are brimming with talent.

You're made to look like a fool when you incorrectly assume Sheppard doesn't play on talls so now you act like you've just been trolling the whole time, that's cute

He's already had 6 big weeks almost half a season to go.

No chance he makes it.

I haven't seen Ziebell mentioned, his last few months shits on Martins since he's moved back to the midfield. If he hasn't been mentioned with these numbers, then Martin certainly shouldn't.

You may be unaware, but Martin's last 10 games are:
Average Disposals: 31.7
Marks: 7.6
AFL: 105.75
So given that Ziebell's AFL fantasy is so high, he is obviously playing a really well rounded game, but Martin's hasn't been too shabby either.

Yes, I'd say 8+ tackles, 6+ clearances and over a goal a game is fairly well rounded...

His first 5 games as a forward will probably cost him, but he's been the equal of Cunnington the last 5 weeks.

He’s averaging 20 touches a game this year. He’d need to average 40 a game from here on out and kick a stack of goals to come close to consideration

Surely the superstar Martin dragged the Tigs over the line against North then?

Midfield spots are pretty interesting this season. There are probably 12-20 midfielders fighting for about 8-10 spots (5 midfield spots, a midfielder or two will probably be placed on the HFF and then 2-3 on the bench). Usually, by this time about 4-5 midfielders are locks. This year, I reckon only Tim Kelly would be classified as a lock. I would of said Patrick Cripps as well last week, but he missed last week and will probably miss this week. His also had 2 exceptionally poor games and another 1-2 below average. Would make my team right now comfortably, but not a lock anymore (as a FYI, I think Cripps is a top 3 player in the AFL right now, so no attack on him).

So who are the midfielders fighting for a spot right now (end of round 15) and how would I rank them?

I will preface this by saying I did not include Dayne Zorko or Patrick Dangerfield who I think will get a spots on the half forward line. I also think Whitfield has missed too much football to be included right now, but if he does get a spot I reckon they will slot him across the half back flank, so have not included those 3 in the following ratings.

1. Tim Kelly - I think everyone can agree his the #1 midfielder this season and a lock. Is favorite for the Brownlow medal currently, #1 on the AFLCA and has played every game this season.

2. Patrick Cripps - Absolute machine, would prefer him in my team than T Kelly. He is having a huge season. Has had a couple of down games and will probably miss a few weeks - the only real marks against him. #4th in the AFLCA currently and a top 3 Brownlow favorite. Would be very surprised if he isn't a starting midfielder by seasons end.

3. Nat Fyfe - The first 2 are pretty easily #1 and #2, I think here you could have a few players. Fyfe for me has probably been the most consistent of those players though across the first 15 rounds, his also a very big name player (favors AA selection) and is currently 3rd favorite for the Brownlow medal and #6th on the AFLCA.

4. Lachie Neale - Again, could easily swap him with a Cunnington or Bontempelli, but his first 6 weeks were unreal. His played every game and is averaging 32.5 disposals per game and over 8 clearances - huge. 7th on the AFLCA and a top 5 Brownlow medal fancy.

5. Ben Cunnington - Had a big last 6 weeks, has also been consistent this season. Averaging 28 disposals and over 8 clearances a game. His also #2 on the AFLCA, 2nd to only Tim Kelly. He has never been AA before and not really considered a huge name. Definitely deserving of his first AA.

6. Marcus Bontempelli - Flown under the radar, but his been the bulldogs best midfielder (ahead of Macrae) this season. A big critique of The Bonts has been his possession count, but this season his averaging over 27 disposals a game and 6 clearances. Considering he plays huge forward time, these numbers are all that more impressive. Currently #4th on the AFLCA.

7. Travis Boak - Best season I've ever seen from Travis Boak. Had trouble ranking him vs Josh Jelly, but I think the fact that he has played every game and been so consistent he slots into #7. His #5th on the AFLCA as well.

8. Josh Kelly - Star, if he hadn't of missed 3 games he would be higher. His first month of football also wasn't up to the same standard of his last 2 months (which has been A+ grade). I think he will end up making the starting AA, but right now his on the bench for me.

9. Luke Shuey - Having a really good season, I think every West Coast fan would agree his been there best midfielder this season, he just misses out on my current team but I could easily see him getting a spot by the end of the season. #9th on the AFLCA as well.

10. Luke Parker - His last 6 weeks have been phenomenal, if he can keep up the momentum and finish the season like that he will find a spot in the AA team.

11. Mitch Duncan - Thought he should of made the 2017 AA team, his backing up his last 2 seasons with another great season. Flys under the radar down at Geelong, I've probably put him higher than the selectors, I don't think he will make the team but IMO he deserves to be ahead of the likes of Treloar etc.

12. Stephen Coniglio - Most would probably put him ahead of Duncan - that's fine, I'm happy to concede that. Too many deficiencies in his game for me though.

13. Brad Crouch - Career best season, spewing I didn't start him in my SC (supercoach) team. Doubt he finds a spot in the team, but should make the squad.

14. Ricky Henderson - Been Hawthorns best midfielder this season - been pretty consistent and is #20 on the AFLCA.

15. Jackson Macrae - If he couldn't make the AA team last year, he won't make it this year. His last 3 weeks have been huge though. Averaging almost 32 possessions a game over the season.

16. Adam Treloar - So much of the football, but he would have to be one of the least damaging players in the league with it. What was that game vs North? His disposal was horrendous. If he can fix his disposal usage for the remaining games he would be a chance. Would personally say Pendles is ahead, but in selectors eyes I'd say Treloar is around here.

Next 5 (in no order) - Tarranto, Yeo, McCluggage, Sloane and Pendlebury.

Colours are tiers

Blue - Almost locked in.

Green - Would clearly be in the team right now, and a fair way ahead of the next tier. However, if say Neale has a bad final four weeks and Parker absolutely kills it I can easily see Neale dropping out and Parker sliding in. Especially considering Neale's best footy was in the first 5-6 weeks, and selectors favour the back end of the season.

Red - Still a chance to make the AA team, but will need to hit a purple patch. Right now, Shuey, Parker and Coniglio are probably the most likely to dislodge a midfielder and snag a spot in the team. I'm a big fan of Duncan (rated him ahead of Coniglio), but would be surprised if he made the team - like Macrae, behind the best mid(s) in the team and gets little media attention.

Current Round 15 AA Team:
B: Brad Sheppard – Mark Blicavs – Luke Ryan
HB Shannon Hurn (C) – Harris Andrews – Tom Stewart
C: Tim Kelly – Patrick Cripps (VC) – Lachie Neale
HF: Patrick Dangerfield – Jeremy Cameron – Dayne Zorko
FF – Michael Walters – Tom Hawkins – Gary Ablett Jnr
R: Brodie Grundy – Nat Fyfe – Ben Cunnington
INT: Max Gawn – Marcus Bontempelli - Travis Boak – Josh Kelly

Very, very stiff and the 3 on the fringe of selection that I really wanted to include but just couldn't - Jordan De Goey, Alex Keath and Robbie Tarrant. Would have no issues if you omitted Danger for De Goey or Ryan for Keath/Tarrant. Lots of 50/50 calls right now and lots of spots still up for grabs.

Updated for your viewing pleasure, make of this what you will!

With the 'Ruck Metric' being Hitouts to Advantage + Clearances + Inside 50s + Tackles + One Percenters, I've picked out the lead ruckman from each side (in terms of time on ground and ruck contests participated), and ranked them like so:

703078

703212

I've got the numbers on hand for all 148 players that have participated in at least one ruck contest this year, but the lead ruckman from each club is really the only ones that are relevant to this conversation.

Looking at it this way, this narrows the focus of the ruck discussion to things that are primarily important to ruckwork, and prevents us getting distracted by secondary actions (disposals, marks, goals, etc.) when assessing this specialised role.

Interesting to note for the players you mentioned there (also added Dangerfield and Zorko, as they do spend the majority of their time in the midfield, and chucked the #1 Draft Pick Sam Walsh on the end for good measure as well):

703204
703205
703206
703208
703209
703210

Might confirm or dispel a few ideas or misconceptions.

Also interesting to see how many are considering Tim Kelly to be the "standout", while other players putting up similar numbers (eg. Marcus Bontempelli, Patrick Dangerfield) are thought of as a fair way off or having "down" years. From the numbers above, the best and most balanced all-round mid (attack, defense, inside/outside, efficiency) this year has probably been Rory Sloane.

Overall though, it's all very close, and there's no real absolute "locks" nor glaringly bad selections to be made IMO, although to me it's pretty clear that Brad Crouch and Hugh McCluggage stand out as guys that shouldn't really be in this company.

I think Dusty is one of those media names that only really needs to have 6-8 big weeks to make the side.

703218

He's really not having that bad a year TBH.

Like Dangerfield, he's below his absolute mindblowing Brownlow best (less-than-ideal ruck service and midfield combinations may have something to do with it), and we're all a bit fatigued by his omnipresence, so he gets underrated a bit.
