I somehow keep thinking that we might have really erred by missing out on Mitchell or in not pursuing Ratten.

The midfield is probably our most prized posession right now and I fear that not having a specialist/proven midfield coach, might set us back a little.

Nah forget media hype, Mitchell and Ratten are specialist midfield coaches no doubt, but let’s not forget Bruce manged and coached one the best & most potent midfields for years in Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis together with Russell & Bolton that’s a strong core presence behind the success they achieve, surely they can do it all again.

This is a big step up for you from 5 days ago, where your brain was breaking over this trade. :p

Yeah, I know. When I saw Carlton and pick #19 come up, it felt weird.
Makes more sense now having filtered through the rubbish, along with being presented some facts. i.e. The CFC rated Stocker at 8 or better.

There is one question that gets stuck with me though and I'll never get the answer to it; I wonder if Carlton may have considered taking Rankine, if they knew they'd get Stocker at #19? We'll never really know.

Whereas the version on News.com.au makes out as though the GWS list manager is suggesting Carlton made a mistake by not taking Rankine at 1.

****ing media agendas. Why do they need to twist statements? GWS would likely have taken Rankine - pretty clear that they're in a position better suited to passing on balanced midfielders and opting for risky x-factor types - not, GWS list manager would have taken Rankine if he was managing Carlton's list.

It's a good question, but I would have personally been banking on 2 or 3 of Butters, Jones, RCD, Stocker, O'Halloran and Hill being on the board. As it turns out, 4 of them were.

I would have picked Lukosius no matter what.

We would've taken Rankine.

Edit: I should rephrase, fairly sure we rated Rankine second behind Walsh.

I'm happy with what we got.. grass is not always greener!

Agree, Sam Walsh truly is an outstanding young lad mature, confident and talented footballer too. He’ll be a fine leader for the CFC for many years.
Looking at photos of Walsh and Stocker brings a smile of reassurance, two professional, mature young lads both serious about their football and what they want to achieve.Hard to keep a lid on it.
Rankine is destined to be a brilliant player no doubt, has the skill but he’s prone be petulant at times and is a definite flight risk for any team outside of SA.

Agree with your list adjustments and Thomas to retire, IMHO, Garlett is on very thin ice, if he has another nonchalant season he’s out Russell will not suffer any fools it’s his regime or the highway. So we may be looking at 8 changes.
Garlett was a good pick up for us.....his shoulder was a mess a lot of 2018 and played with one arm
Showed plenty and we will see more of him in 2019 and beyond
has a good work ethic....good footballer

Need to lock him away on a 5 yr contact minimum as soon as possible

I'm sure all the kids taken in the top 10 will sign contract extensions leading into round 1................with the exceptions of Ben King, Jack Lukosius and Izak Rankine :p

Not that they may not deserve it, but I think this will be the last year for Simpson and Thomas

Phillips under the pump

Levi and Lobbe gone

Phillips should retain his spot on the list. He has shown he can step up to the plate when required.

Kreuzer hasn't exactly had the best run with injuries and De Koning is a few years away from having a significant impact on games.

Phillips has struggled with injuries every year, I have no doubt we will target a ruckman next year

You may be right, but at this stage I'd be keeping one of Phillips or Lobbe on the list beyond 2019, and I'd be leaning towards the latter.

Phillips, for all his athletic ability, has never shown any ability to stay out on the park, and not sure I expect that to change next year.

Unless we can bring in another ready to go option, think we could do a lot worse than move Lobbe to the rookie list.

I don't disagree, with the fact of keeping one of Phillips or Lobbe, I too would keep Lobbe over Phillips, but I get the feeling that the club will target a ruckman end of next year. Whether that be a Grundy type as the lead ruck, or a support player for TDK such as a Cameron or a Pittonet, I am not quite sure, but something will happen

Senior 22:
FB: Plowman Jones Marchbank
HB: Docherty Weitering Williamson
C: Dow Kennedy O'Brien
HF: SPS C.Curnow Murphy
FF: McGovern McKay Fisher

R: Kreuzer Cripps Setterfield

Int: Walsh, Stocker, Simpson, E.Curnow

Reserves:
FB: Schumacher Macreadie Newman
HB: Owies Goddard Thomas
C: Pickett Lang Polson
HF: Bugg Kerr Garlett
FF: Fasolo Casboult TDK

R: Lobbe JSOS Cuningham

Int: Phillips, O'Dwyer, BSOS, LeBois

Surely you jest with Newman BP for the 'Magoos' !!!

Barring injury he will be in our best starting 22 for sure.

So I think the list is really starting to look better.

If we take a conservative look at the Best 22:

B: Newman, Weitering, Plowman
HB: Docherty, Marchbank, Simpson
C: Fisher, Cripps, Murphy
HF: Petrevski-Seton, C. Curnow, Thomas
F: Fasolo, H. Mckay, McGovern
R: Kreuzer, Kennedy, Dow

I/C: Setterfield, O'Brien, E. Curnow, Williamson

And the Reserves:

B: Schumacher, Jones, MacReadie
HB: B. Silvagni, Goddard, Garlett
C: Walsh, Stocker, Bugg
HF: Polon, Kerr, J. Silvagni
F: Pickett, Casboult, De Koning,
R: Lobbe, Lang, Cuningham,

I/C: Phillips, Le Bois, Owies, O'Dwyer

Obviously a lot of water to go under the bridge, and I have tended to select players with a bit more polish into the senior side and no draftees.

My guess is that by the end of the pre-season, players like Walsh will be in the Best 22 and Bugg will be the go to pressure forward.

I have selected Fasolo, primarily because there isn't a good back-up goal sneak who has the same sort of scoreboard impact. If his defensive pressure isn't to standard, I can see him missing.

Eh I didn't read it that way. GWS just reckon Rankine was better at 1, remember that's for them. Their midfield is stacked. They'd be looking at cream type players like Rankine. Later their list manager basically praised our trade for Stocker. Don't think it's a negative or agenda based article.
Agree. I have said it all along that if you finished 12th and up, you would take Rankin at 1. If Rankin fulfils his potential, his ceiling is higher than Walsh. Walsh is a safe bet that is almost a guaranteed gun. Rankin is highly probably to becoming a superstar.
