How does that work then? Did they get AFL dispensation to be able to do it?

They have the age profile of a lawn bowls club, isn't that exactly what the rule is there to prevent?

I think the 4 year period has to have passed before the AFL step in. So while it's likely they will only use 1 first round draft pick from 2017-20, they AFL will allow them this year to try and trade back into the first round. But I think if they haven't traded back in by next year the AFL won't allow them to trade their 2021 pick.

Because maybe these WA kids are actually better than where they are going to be taken. The top 20 lists are again dominated by Victorians, yet WA was somehow able to beat them with supposedly inferior top end talent.

There is every chance that guys like Rivers, Sharp and Taylor turn out better/equal than players who go earlier.

Just go back to last year. Clark is the first WA player taken at 15, but he should have gone a fair bit higher.

Of course. More than half the league is Victorian clubs, and they are going to have a bias towards Victorian kids. Not just because of the homesick factor, but also because they would have their best coverage of recruiters/scouts in Victoria. Their coverage in WA isn't going to be as good, so overall WA kids are going to be more of a risk not just to the Vic clubs, but every other East Coast club.

We have a competitive advantage being based here, but we seemingly refuse to use it. This is borne out by our record - which is garbage at drafting kids from Melbourne. They're either rubbish or want to go home.
