This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

The thread is about our recruiting so I gave my views on the parts of the field I think we’re behind the rest of the competition.

Our midfield is one of the worst and we have no good small forwards (it’s not because we’re young either) yet most people seem to want to recruit more KPPs... I don’t get it.

It’s like we’re defeated before we even start, assuming half our team will be out injured. We won’t win anything if they are but if neglect midfield and small forwards we won’t win many games whether they are there or not.
First round pick should be best available and especially a top 10 pick.

That’s why people are talking about drafting a Key position player.

Even with the fab 4, WC with Lynch and Hanson only won the one flag, by the smallest margin.
Cats from 07 were the real deal.
Freo mids beat the Hawks midfielders in 013, yet the Hawks won, 3 talls.
WC in 018, Kennedy, Darling, sure we can make finals as before with mids, winning a flag/flags?

It should be best available for us not strictly best available. If a KPP really is that much better than the next best player then take them, especially if the next few mids are similar to what we already have.

I’m just not sure the gap is actually going to be that big, in fact if DGB was from Victoria I don’t reckon anyone of this board would be overly interested. Most including me haven’t seen him play. Our club doesn’t seem to care where they’re from.

That West Coast team probably had a window of three years realistically until Judd packed his bags and the drug problems really started to ruin the club and meant 3-4 other guys were gone pretty quick.

What is ignored as well by us Freo fans is Shuey, Yeo, Gaff, Redden and Sheed looks like a pretty damn good midfield, even if Gaff wasn’t there. Plus their small forwards were much much better than ours project to be. No ones pretending Collingwood 2018 were the best Grand Finalists we’ve seen either - our 2013 side wins that game easily imo.

West Coast didn’t exactly have a first round draft pick KPP sitting on the pine (except first year players) in case they had injuries when they won the flag in 2018 either. Nor did we in 2013 - we just didn’t have the second KPP in the first place. We’ve probably got five KPFs at least who are a better option than Zac Clarke even now.

The examples of teams winning flags and making Grand Finals without a tonne of elite talls is almost endless. Doing the same without a gun midfield just doesn’t happen.

Ah ok, I agree on all that. I don't think our midfield will stay as one of the worst for long though.

One thing about JL that I really like is that he doesn't seem to shoehorn players into positions they didn't play as juniors. So I would expect him to request the list management team go out and get him some actual forwards rather than drafting mids and sticking them forward.

100% no chance that if he was a Vic Metro player anybody here would be the least bit interested. He is the most highly rated WA prospect. Happens literally every year.

I'm actually all for the two WA mids talked up based purely on what I have read but that's not because WA, it's because we could definitely use those types.

Yes.

Don't think so
It’s been a while since we have had a specialist small defender, preferring to play developing or rotating mids in that position. I’m not against it, especially as the team matures and we aren’t looking for game time into young players. A settled back 6 is a massive plus for any side.

I like him. He's very clean and assured with the ball

There was talk about Angus coming to us last trade period and he apparently went to Melbourne and asked for an assurance that it wasn't going to happen.

The way Bell AND Mahoney described it was that we asked, Melbourne said no.

Can read that two different ways I suppose
1) Brayshaw said he would be open to it if Melbourne are, they said no
2) We went behind his back and asked Melbourne to include him in the Langdon deal.

I hope its not number 2 because I would have though we learnt what happens when you force a player to go interstate as part of a trade when they dont really want to with Tarrant / Croad

Someone from a list management team at another club told me Brayshaw was open to it, Bell and Brayshaw's management were ready to facilitate it but Melbourne said no

The Media made it sound like the second one. But that may have been horror at the thought that any Victoria would want to come West. He would be a good get if he is over the concussion issues. Are his skills iffy
I can't remember
