Many deny that Adelaide sniffing around saw us panic and go early on Rutten. Whats your take on that?

Maybe be some fact in it. I do know that Rutten was universally rated the best coach in his group to do the level 4 coaching course.

I also wonder how much the AFL is keeping us in our place. And I say that in regards to the board being virtually silent because the AFL does not want to see us being too outspoken too soon after putting a big s**t stain on their competition. Lets face it they nearly lost a fair bit of federal funding over our indiscretion. Not saying we should not be giving them the two finger salute but there would be some pressure there.

I want the first one, we've lost 20k members this year, I think every Essendon fan wants to start winning and couldn't care less who coached us if we did, May be some folk would bent out of shape early but winning will fix all that.

Anyway it's not gonna happen and we'll back Truck in for the next 18 months at the very least.
Winning’s not worth Sam Mitchell

The injection hand signal and other dog acts.. Might as well get Campbell Brown as our welfare officer while we’re at it. Teach the boys to punt and punch.

I would have to go back and read a lot of stuff but has anyone commented on how much our lack of leaders in the playing group has an impact ?
In recent times two of our best players have been our worst defenders yet have captained the club.

Ad nauseum.

Draft the meanest midfielder possible. The guy who wants to be at the nottom of the pack and will scrap all day.

Let Draper be the emotional heart of the club and tell him to set the physical tone each game.

Heppell to half back as captain for one more year while we froom Ridley and McGrath to take over.

There's an entire thread on leadership if that helps?

I've wondered the same thing. I get the feeling the AFL would be very happy for us to not have much success for a decade or so, without having us do a Carlton and spending the entire time winning wooden spoons.

So the ladder is finalised.

In 2020 Port Adelaide, Fremantle, St Kilda, Carlton and Melbourne went past us on the ladder - all finished below us in 2019.

Interestingly, 3 of those 5 had new coaches in 2020 (St Kilda, Freo and Carlton).

We didn't go past anybody.
But it takes more than 3 years to do anything as coach? More than 5 if you don't count all the seasons you're in charge...

If we'd had our original 2020 fixture we would have played GWS, Collingwood, Adelaide, North Melbourne, and Sydney twice, and could probably have been relied upon to win at least a couple of them.

They have been a middle of the road team since 2000, hardly surprising to see the percentage hovering around 100% over this time. Pretty damning that they haven't been able to crack 110% even in the years they made finals.

Yet another article. https://bomberlandia.com/2020/09/14/the-anatomy-of-the-bombers-lost-season/

Random af website but the link came from twitter, I think it was written by a Guardian journo as freelance or something? Reasonable and rings true for me anyway.
decent write up
And whilst there are "reasons" for the poor results this year, they don't excuse/explain the poor performances.
I can handle losses due to personnel being missing. What irks me is how easily we lose momentum and lay down. And the time it takes us to respond.

That said, a season lost is a season lost. Teams have them all the time and respond.
What really concerns me is the season we've had rolling into the off-season we're about to have

McKenna - coming off 4th in the BnF. A top 10 player with age and talent on his side. Gone for nothing
Saad - A top 5 player and critical pin, on his way out
Daniher - Our best KPF and arguably our best player...12 months after knocking back picks 9 & 3 (huge gambit for a club with poor young depth) he's touring another clubs' facilities....
Fantasia - Had his head turned. returns for 5 games and a goal. Getting medicals.

All the while Xav feels a revolt coming. He may be right, but he may be reading the winds a little wrong there.

We are not a well run organisation at the moment. And i feel we haven't been for quite some time.

Basically posted a bit of this in the coaches thread just now (I hadn't read this) and pretty much all of it for the last 12 months - as have many others. Maybe we all have no idea :)

These problems are so common in general business you could spot them from the moon when it comes to a football club full of itself like we are at the moment (and have been for a very long time).
