How Higgins will get to Cats
JON RALPH
Geelong is expected to hand over its No.30 draft pick for North Melbourne's Shaun Higgins.
The Herald Sun understands the Cats are prepared to use that selection, having secured it from Carlton in the Lachie Fogarty trade.
The Cats handed over pick 38 for 30 and 51 in this year's draft.
The Cats are aware of how potent Higgins would be on the half forward flank, effectively replacing Gary Ablett.
The Roos have always wanted a quality pick given their acceptance that Higgins is heading home to Geelong for family reason.

How many cracks has this idiot had at this trade now?

Our last pick 30 was Trent Dumont. Before that, Rod Crowe, Sav Rocca and Paul McMahon.

Fair to say that's a 50% record.

people like to have a big crank over top 10, top 5 picks but it can slip a person's mind just how good you have to be to be top 30 in your draft year

Would have to be close to the best player picked up via Free Agency since it was introduced. Be plenty of other clubs looking back and thinking 'How did we not consider this bloke'.

Agreed. His value to us has been enormous from start to finish.

Now let's give his replacement #4 and ride them to glory.

True, but the average player picked in the 20s only plays 32 games for their club. Stats below.

50% success record on pick 30s is pretty good fishing, tbh.

We should take comfort from the fact that two top ten picks will net us a very, very good player. Here's some stats on draft picks (data from 1993-2018)

So currently we have picks 2, 11, 28, 30 and 70. Corr and Young in. The delisted 11 + Higgins out with Brown to follow. Do we have any idea of the list sizes yet. Will we be able to field a list without multiple DFAs?

North list manager Glenn Luff said it was important to negotiate a deal that was right for both parties.

“We’ve been working hard to reach a deal that all parties were satisfied with and getting a good pick in while helping Shaun secure a longer term deal was a priority,” Luff said.

“It’s important for us to secure a strong draft hand to invest in young talent but we also wanted to make sure we looked after someone who has been a champion player for our club.”

Luff thanked Higgins for his contribution.

“Shaun has been a really important player and person for our club and has won two Syd Barker medals,” he said.

“He’s been a great leader, is always professional and is one of the best role models you could ask for. He has helped develop our younger players and his experience and knowledge will hold them in good stead, so we thank him for that.

“We wish Shaun, Heidi and Rosie the very best for the next chapter in their lives.”

The reality is next year we wanted to go with Cunnington, LDU and Simpkin in the middle, Higgins isn't a wingman and our flank positions are already getting overwhelmed.
Yeah, we are just like Richmond, so much depth we have to trade away guys like Butler and Jack Higgins etc

U can never have too many quality mids...that's why Dangerfield, I mean Geelong is taking him.
