Haven't really kept up with the rollercoaster of the trade thread this year but I did hear something very surprising today.

Apparently we are paying 104% of the salary cap at the moment, in large part due to some of the interesting decisions made in the last few years by Joyces & co... So I think we need to readjust any expectations regarding a 'warchest' this year.

Whoever told you obviously doesn't understand the concept.

We very well might be paying 104% of the salary cap, but that's likely because we are front loading contracts meaning we may have 12% to play with in a year or two to sign players.

We wouldn't be maxed out on 104% and be offering big $$$ to the likes of Williams if that was the case.

We also cleared the best part of $4m+ from the cap with the players we just delisted, most of these will be replaced with draftee's on base wages or DFA's on minimal coin.

I imagine we would have close to the largest salary cap space in AFL history at the moment.

No I understand that, but I just found it surprising that we were at 104% currently. I know anyone claiming ITK needs to be taken with a grain of salt but I heard this from a club source that I would say definitely understands how the salary cap works.

I did hear for this reason that we aren't going after Jeremy Cameron as he would be too expensive.

I don't know any details about Williams but it would probably be either:
a) the media were full of shit about the figures offered (the most likely)
and / or
b) it would've been a heavily back ended offer.

Given the clean out and the unlikelihood of any real success over the next couple of years it will be interesting to see if the Good Friday game gets pulled from us. Also worry about Shaw’s potential game style being a complete snorefest which will also go against us! Who’d want to watch?! I’ll struggle!

Def agree with Polec we need to make that work.... Ben brown I'm not sure about... he was pretty ave in 2019 as were a lot.... but not sure if he is now beyond his best or defenders know how he plays and so have eliminated his threat or if this year was an aberration and he flies next year.... really not sure

Nobody can convince me that 14 odd game of BBB at Marvel and two in Tassie in 2021 is a bad idea.

Tony Lockett would've struggled to kick a goal in our forward line this year with the way we were moving the ball and delivering it to our forwards. Plus Larkey and Brown played maybe 1 or 2 games together? This means Brown got 2 or 3 defenders on him every time. He also played with a dodgy knee for the whole year.

What are we honestly expecting in return for him? Especially after the club put out an idiotic statement saying they were open to moving him on. Talk about devaluing your own asset! Mind shattering stupidity. Unless the offer from a rival club is a pick inside the top 15, then I am saying no way.

3 years on $800K is fair for Brown. We should just offer him that and get it done. The cap this year was approx $13m, so as a % of the cap, it's entirely reasonable. I understand it will drop for next year, but surely not by a huge %? It simply can't drop too much, there's already many contracts in place all over the league that have to be honoured, which were structured under the old salary cap.

We had a diabolical run with injury this year (which nobody in the media seems aware of when assessing our seasons performance.) If we had Cunners/BBB/JZ/Taylor/Thomas/Garner fit and on the park, along with another pre-season into the likes of Zurhaar, Larkey, Jy, Anderson, Scott, Dumont, LDU, LMAC etc and a couple of good young picks who debut round one, then things can turn around very quickly. If we keep Higgo and Taz continues to be a rock down back with Walker, then it's not all doom and gloom.

The media and other clubs have consistently underestimated and undervalued our players. We all know that. Goldy was clearly the AA ruckman and didn't even make the squad of 40 FFS.
Unfortunately, i feel that our supporters have started undervaluing our players as well. We will be better than a lot of people think next year. Definitely not bottom 4 and maybe sneaking up towards a spot from 7th-10th.

However if we trade BBB and Higgo for speculative 2nd round picks, then I'd say it's deliberate "tank city" next year and everything I've said above becomes null and void.

Remember, it wasn't long ago that Port Adelaide were losing player after player and could barely keep the lights on.....

Given that AFL's lack of commitment towards this game and North Melbourne's involvement in it then I'd suggest it would be in serious jeopardy and that the Saints and Dogs would be a possibility.

Having said that, Carlton held the season opener despite having a putrid team, both Essendon and Collingwood have played on ANZAC Day as reigning wooden spooners, Melbourne have kept playing on the Queen's Birthday through the past 15 years, and that Hawthorn/Geelong on Easter Monday next year looms as a potential blowout. But yeah, none of those teams is North and Good Friday hasn't been embedded as a true football day.

3 years on $800K is fair for Brown.

The deal was 750 x 3 which he rejected.

Now it's looking unlikely that he will be getting offers of that size even from opposition clubs - Why would we pay him 800 x 3 if no one else is willing to? Doesn't make any sense for the club to pay him more then he is worth in the market.

Wouldnt have thought so, Good Friday is our game. We pioneered it.

The other game is just as easy though

"Mahoney, Comden & Perez are clearly going to be stars - it's great we finally have people in the club WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!!"

"I think I'll back the expertise of Brady Rawlings over some random on BigFooty"

Being smugly arrogant about an unknown future is a worse position to take for mine.

I'm simply using historical indicators showing that the talent pool seriously thins out after pick 15 and the odds of striking gold are against you - sadly that has been particularly true over a significant period of time for this club.

For this reason, I wouldn't be having a firesale of our proven stars for questionable picks.

You know who was a really successful late round pick? Ben Brown...

It’s the speculative nature of the picks we may get in return for BBB and Polec and Higgo that I worry about.
Worst draft ever, great time to snag a few 2nd rounders.
If we were to get some players or higher picks back then I can see the logic.
I fear we may have forced ourselves into a corner we can’t recover from in these possible moves.
You don’t go out and advertise that your marriage has just broken up while selling your house (you can guarantee a lower price because of your perceived desperation to liquidate your assets due to divorce settlement) and I don’t see reconciliation on the table with BBB or Polec.

I'm kind of hoping there's no crowds next year or at least capped crowds next year.

It would still be a financial disaster obviously, but we are less reliant on them than others.

It would also keep the media off of our back for another year.
Unbelievably bad post

Edit. Worst of 2020

It was a long shot so why move it on and try to repeat history, lighting very rarely strikes twice in the same place, we won’t be that lucky.
The picks out there are litters with more failures that successes.

I'm warming to the idea of trading for Cox - in keeping with our tradition of being V/AFL innovators, we'd be the first club to have a real live tackle and speccy dummy. Training standards will go through the roof.

On a related note, after the way he gobbed off at Jy when he pinged him trying to play on around him, the first full contact session of pre-season would be absolute popcorn material.
Get preussy back for a run

Especially seeing as you generally get unders for keeping your own players.

If Brown legitimately only gets offers of $650k on the open market, that $550k offer was probably spot on.
