Thoughts here

My son attended a school footy clinic a couple of weeks ago and mentioned that Joel Western was in his squad

His comments were that he had elite skills but was pretty small ?
Did he look undersized? Sounds about Caleb Daniel size and 67kg ?

Plenty of time to beef him up I guess .
Sounds like a gun if my young fella is any judge

Can anyone help with more information Sandon Page (Gee thanks mum and dad for the name) and his potential.

I was at the U18 game and Sandon Page did all the things you want as a forward, that are never noticed on the stats.. worked hard, applied pressure, and was rewarded for his positioning and marking skills, strong one grab hands...4 goals.. just clean, hard working medium size forward, 190cm.

He was one of my pleasant takeaways from the game.. along with Chapman..

Meloncelli if he was faster would be a great winger.

Issue with Western is where is he going to play at AFL level? Looks like he was playing inside in this all stars game? At that height AND frame he's going to have to be outside at top level.

Thank Christ that size is his issue or we would be paying a top 10 pick.

Btw I just measured my finger nail and it is 3cm long. That puts Neale a finger nail taller than Western and Shai Bolton 1/3 of a finger nail taller. Both have been pretty handy mids this year.

Clean hands and composure under pressure will get you this years rising star if you are 1.78m or a tad over a finger nail taller than Western.

You can even rack up 36 touches and 6 goals followed by an AA jersey if you are a finger nail taller than western and your name is Michael Walters.

1.74m puts you smack bang in the middle of Farmer and Ballantyne. I haven’t once heard anyone say that Western is capable of kicking goals.

Pretty sure that Westerns height won’t be an issue at AFL issue. He has more than enough tools to make a go of it.

Fair call and good points

My boy isn't big in height or frame so when I heard him compare Western as smaller than him I thought he may be a bit on the light side in body frame .

Watched my lad take the jump from Colts straight to League this year and even in our GSFL he got fairly battered in the midfield.

Like I said can always get em in the gym to bulk up , height wasn't the main concern .
So does it look like we have a chance to secure Western?

Thanks for reminding me to cut my sons fingernails.

How big is westerns vertical leap? Walters, farmer and Bolton in particular are high leapers so makes up for their lack of height.

It is more his light frame that is a concern than his height, however he does seem to be an outside inside mid ready for the hand ball to burst away, rather than the player firing off the handball.

Also really want to see how fast he. I’ve only watched the colts gf and didn’t notice him being above average speed. He does have a booming kick which is handy for his size.

Listened to Road to the draft podcast earlier. They had the Richmond list manager on. On 2 separate occasions, he specifically mentioned Brandon Walker. Firstly he said at the start he had an “excellent season” when talking about the WA prospects (first name he mentioned after LMD and DGB) and raised his name again later when Twomey asked him who he thinks may be bid on by the time their first pick comes around...

Good stats on this site
800 for a kid that size is pretty good
Agility rating is excellent

Does sound like a good run and carry player . Maybe develop him as a wing ( speed ?) with a future as potential outside mid

A big vertical leap is underrated

I'm sorry but the number of inside mids of Westerns size and weight in the AFL is zero. The short mids are always heavier and thick set: Neale, Zorko, Prestia. Western is the opposite. Maybe he can put on significant weight but does anyone looking at him really think that's likely?
He's not going to be a mid at top level he's a wing or forward. Don't get me wrong I'm happy we have access to a talented player but I think we should temper our expectations. His double disadvantage in height and size means he'll have to work harder to make it.

On the road to the draft podcast the Richmond recruiter was asked which NGA kids could get taken first round and Brandon Walker was mentioned as an outside chance.
He mentions power and speed as his strengths.
He brought up his name again when asked about the better WA prospects. Western wasn’t mentioned at all.

Think of him like a skinny Dayne Zorko without the cheating on his partner. Inside clearance mid that can impact in other areas and we will build an outside component to his game as his tank improves.

There's quite a bit to be quietly excited about with Joel.

Walters seems to be a good inside mid without being stocky or tall. Uses his agility to weave around the traffic i think Western could do the same.

Sounds like comprehensive evidence we can take Western as a Cat B when no bid ever comes.

Would you like a short bow to match your long one?
I’m not sure where I infer Western wouldn’t be bid on?
My guess would be 25-35.
Just found it interesting that he mentioned the likes of Winder etc and not Western.
Maybe he didn’t want to let on they are keen.
Anyway, carry on

I was just teasing you about the inference that them not mentioning him meant anything at all.

He also didn't mention Grainger-Barrass, O'Driscoll or Carroll. I think it confirmed Walker is a possible late 1st bid for us to match but that's about all I got from that interview in regard to the WA players.

I wonder what a 19 year old Son Son weighed?

Not a lot you'd think.

This would be a stronger argument if Sonny had even stepped foot inside an AFL centre square before he was 25. For the record Walters was drafted 5 kg heavier* and 5 cm taller than Western's published figures.

Walters was drafted as an inside/out forward/mid. That what what Western will need to be too, as an inside mid only he's almost certainly doomed to failure.

*In fairness to Western Sonny may have had some pudge in that he doesn't.
